JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

Of course! Guardians of the Galaxy!

Are you sure? Superheroes movies have not been doing too good. CA2 & DOFP did mediocre...but then again, TASM2 ended it's run at $30 million+. However, it didn't even open as well as Maleficent, which will end it's run north of $60 million. With Japan, it doesn't matter how much Americans (or the rest of the world for that matter) likes/hypes a movie. If the Japanese don't like, they don't watch. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Here's a more detailed response for potential 1 billion+ openers:

2014:

Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Sept. 13th) - Very Unlikely.  Local live-action films opening so high is incredibly rare (has only happened twice, ever).

Parasyte Beast Part 1 (Nov. 29th) - Very Unlikely.  Local live-action films opening so high is incredibly rare (has only happened twice, ever).

Yokai Watch (Dec. 20th) - Unlikely, but a possible giveaway gives it potential.  The franchise has blown up this past year, so it's one to keep an eye on from now on.

Big Hero 6 (Dec. 20th) - Unlikely, but the current goodwill of Disney also gives it potential.  Having a Japanese main character a Tokyo inspired setting could create additional interest in this one, too.

2015:

Dragon Ball Z (Golden Week) - Unlikely, but any possible giveaway gives it potential.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron (Golden Week) - Very Unlikely.  It'd require a 100% increase over the first film (more in admissions), and the sequels to Thor and Captain America barely increased over their predecessors this past year.

Cinderella (May) - Unlikely.  Maleficent couldn't do it after following Frozen and with Angelina Jolie, so this is unlikely.  But, Disney is a powerhouse right now and Cinderella is an incredibly known property.

Jurassic World (TBD) - Unlikely.  While the first two films, especially the first, was a huge success, the third film dropped nearly 50% from the second.  There is the potential for a sizable opening, though.

Attack on Titan Part 1/Part 2 (July/August) - Likely.  There will more than likely be something given to attendees, making these likely.  They'd have potential regardless, too, considering how massive the franchise is.

Untitled Mamoru Hosada film (July) - Unlikely.. maybe.  He hasn't announced any film for next year yet, but with Miyazaki retired and Studio Ghibli going on hiatus, and given how popular Hosoda has become among critics and general audiences, his material will receive even more interest now, so there's potential.

One Piece (December) - Very Likely.  The last two films films have done so, with the last film even breaking the opening weekend admissions record for a local film, so this is probably a 99% lock.  But it hasn't been officially announced yet.

Star Wars Episode VII (Dec. 18th) - Very Likely.  All the prequel films opened above 1 billion, so this is also a 99% lock of happening.  But I think it's getting delayed.

Evangelion 4.0 (TBA) - Likely.  There hasn't been an announcement yet, and the only reason I'm not saying Very Likely is because the last film received mixed responses.  But the fanbase is definitely there, and the final film factor would likely get it there.

Any dailies?

Most films look down around 25-35% compared to last week so far except for Memories of Marnie.  It's staying even with last week and isn't really losing any showtimes or seats this weekend, either.  It might be gaining some actually.

That's a great drop for Godzilla. If it keeps having similar holds, it has a great shot at $40M+.

Screendaily has a very high overseas total for Maleficent until wednesday (497 million). It had 492,5 million sunday with a 3.3 million weekend total, 2.2 million coming from Japan. The 497 million is only possible with wonderful weekdays numbers from Japan this week, almost 4 million in 3 days.Seems impossible, and probably screendaily number is incorrect. Or Disney had a wrong weekend total.
