JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

If it does those exact admissions, then it should come in slightly higher due to the 3D prices.

I see. The multipliers will probably not be as good as the usual Doraemon movie with this one attracting more adults but it's surely going to be close.

Keep in mind too that Saturday might be even deflated slightly because of the typoon, which could send the multiplier much higher.

Aeon Cinemas, which is likely playing stronger than Toho, also has many more discount ticket options this Summer than last Spring.

7,110 - Space Brothers 0 (NEW)
5,280 (-28%) - Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Week 4)

Toho, Movix, 109, Kinezo Cinema Chains Weekend Admissions (08/09-10)
201,057 - Stand By Me, Doraemon (NEW)
117,605 - Transformers: Age of Extinction (NEW)
110,505 (-31%) - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Week 2)
51,253 (-19%) - Maleficent (Week 6)
46,220 (-48%) - Godzilla (Week 3)

36,755 (-21%) - Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Week 4)
17,602 - Space Brothers 0 (NEW)
11,473 (-44%) - Eight Ranger 2 (Week 3)
11,162 (-31%) - Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Week 4)

>Stand By Me, Doraemon nearly matched the combined admissions of Transformers: Age of Extinction and Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc, and it probably beat them both once Aeon Cinemas is factored in.

And considering both Transformers and Kenshin should be over ¥400 million this weekend, then Doraemon likely broke ¥800 million ($8 million) or came really, really close.  And it also opened on Friday, which was also a big day for it, and may result in a 3-day total above ¥1 billion ($10 million+).  The last film to break ¥1 billion in 3 days was The Wind Rises last year.

Stand By Me, Doraemon is pretty much the film this Summer has been waiting for.

I'll have Weekend Estimates up a little later.

Thanks! Any reason for this big drop of T4?

It's not really dropping much.  All the films have had similar admissions with the first film leading the bunch.

Transformers 3 was just released during the 3D boom (which has since come to a screeching halt) with a very favorable exchange rate.  A drop for Transformers 4 was bound to happen.

I understand, thanks for the explanation!

In 2011 one dollar was about 80 yen, now one dollar is over 100 yen so obviously the dollar totals have all decreased quite noticeably.

For example with a 400 million yen opening in 2014 you'll get around $3.9 million when you would get $5 million for the same opening 3 years ago.

If Frozen was released in Japan in 2011/2012, it would have reached $300 million with no problem.

You can't compare like that.  How success is a film in Japan or China should always based on local currency and admission!

The best way is based on local currency!

Local currency works well for Japan because ticket prices have stayed almost the same for decades, except for a tax hike a few months ago, but otherwise admissions is the way to go imo, especially when comparing films from different eras. I will never understand why the movie industry is the only major industry in the entertainement world that goes by gross. Music sales, video games, books, comics (or mangas in Japan), home video etc, they all go by the amounts sold. Makes far more sense to me. In fact Japan does it. :P
