What's impressive about Doraemon and Conan is that they are consistently among the highest grossing movies of the year without the original authors being involved.

Crayon Shin-chan and Naruto movies gross around 2 billion yen. Pokemon has been declining for a few years grossing only 2.5 billion yen last year. One Piece and Dragon Ball need their authors to be involved in the screenplay for the fans to show up and the movies to be successful which is why they only get a movie release every other year instead of annually.

 

Doraemon's authors are dead and Conan's author doesn't write the screenplay for the movies. And yet...

It's going to be Conan all over again. Zootopia is going to take an early lead, and Deadpool will pass it later in the day. It was extremely backloaded yesterday, and almost made as much after 7pm as it did before 2pm. An R15+ movie is naturally going to attract a far more adult audience.

Not as successful as Conan in terms of movies. Except for One Piece, I don't think any of them managed to make 6b yen with any of their movies. Conan did (or will do) it with the latest entry (which makes it the highest grossing entry) after 20 years. Doraemon also had its highest grossing movie this year I think, but it's not that much different from what it usually makes. Conan's resurgence in the last few years is indeed impressive. It once only made like 2.4b yen, and now 6b. So yes, it's an uncommon thing.

The marketing for Detective Conan's latest movie hyped up the 20th anniversary of the film franchise. I wonder how it will be next year.

I don't know why it's making more than yesterday, but my point is that Deadpool is going to shoot up in admissions in the evening. Zootopia's lead has been between 1000 and 1400 for two hours now, so it looks like they're increasing at the same rate after Zootopia's initial jump.

Alright, I looked at some theater-to-theater locations for Deadpool and Zootopia on Toho Theater's website. Deadpool has a few more preordered seats in the evening than Zootopia, but since Zootopia is an older movie in the market, there might be more walk-ups.
