Weekend Ranking [10/26-27]

1 (-) Magi Madoka Magica: The Rebellion Story (Warner Bros.) DEBUT
2 (-) Pretty Cure: The Dress of Hope Tied to the Future! (Toei) DEBUT
3 (1) The Girl in the Sunny Place (Toho) Week 3
4 (3) The King of Apology (Toho) Week 5
5 (-) Now You See Me (Kadokawa Pictures) DEBUT
6 (2) Like Father, Like Son (Toho) Week 5
7 (-) Beyond the Memories (Toho) DEBUT
8 (5) Despicable Me 2 (Toho-Towa) Week 6
9 (4) Human Trust (Shochiku) Week 2
10 (6) Diana (Gaga) Week 2

Estimates were once again fairly unreliable again this weekend, but since they've been underestimating most films, that's okay!

'Magi Madoka Magica: The Rebellion Story' saw a huge opening of ¥400,003,600 ($4.2 million) and 271,279 admissions on only 129 screens. That's a very high avg. ticket price of ¥1,474 ($15.20) (helps explain why estimates were so low), showing that many otaku are willing to pay any price. The opening number may be slightly fudged, too, given how close it is to ¥400 million (literally only 2 or 3 people made the difference!), but it's a huge achievement earning a 2-day psa of ¥3.10 million ($32,000) and delivering the best opening since July, and the best since 'Dark Shadows' in May 2012 for Warner Bros!

I'm sure it'll be pretty frontloaded, but it should still manage ¥1.5 billion ($16 million) or slightly more.

'Pretty Cure: The Dress of Hope Tied to the Future' performed way better than estimates and beat the last film by a solid 9%. The film opened on 199 screens and earned ¥213,410,200 ($2.2 million) and 191,918 admissions. It's definitely going to reach ¥1 billion ($10/11) now.

'Now You See Me' debuted with ¥100,032,400 ($1.1 million) and 76,725 admissions on 182 screens. Given the low screen count, this is a fairly impressive opening that should yield no less than ¥600 million ($6/7 million) for the film in the market.

And finally, debut in a disappointing 7th place, 'Beyond the Memories' grossed just ¥86,713,300 ($890,000) and 65,282 admissions on 266 screens.

Hollywood is doing much better this year than last year.

Nothing compared to 2011:

HP DH1       $124M

PIRATES 4   $108M

MI IV            $70M

TF3              $54M

But I was flabbergasted at 2012 LES MISERABLES' $62M performance in Japan.

That movie bombed in France, the country origin of the writer

That's just the currency talking. Yes, 2011 is still better, but in Yen, Les Mis (almost 6b) is bigger than MI4 (5.4b), and Ted (4.4b) is bigger than TF3 (4.2b). Even Monster's University (9b) is not that far behind HP DH2 (9.6b). Besides, 2010 was much bigger than 2011 both in USD and especially in Yen. It's even bigger if you include Avatar (since it made most of its money in 2010). So 2011 wasn't that special.

Btw, Japan LOVES musical. And Les Mis is one of the most popular musicals there. So I kinda get how it's big in Japan.

923 [31] - Trance (Week 3)

Huge Sunday (Culture Day) all-around. Only two films saw a decrease for the day, while most of the other films saw big increases.

>114,023 admissions at only Toho locations (~20% of the nation's theaters) over the 3-day for SPEC: Close Part I is big, the best for a live-action film this year I believe since it's Saturday and Sunday admissions are higher than both Skyfall and Midsummer Formula.

I'm going to predict about 525-550,000 admissions for ¥650 million ($6.6/6.7 million) for the 3-day Holiday weekend frame. And Monday is looking very good, too, so we may see a 4-day total exceed ¥800 million ($8-9 million).

>Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters recovered over the weekend, but 24,000 admissions over the 3-day is still mediocre. I'll go with a 3-day Holiday weekend debut of about 120,000 admissions and ¥150 million ($1.6 million).

4-Day Weekend Estimates (11/01-04)[Culture Day Weekend]

1 (-) SPEC: Close - Incarnation Part I (Toho) ¥840 million ($8.5 million) [289 theaters] DEBUT
2 (1) Magi Madako Magica: The Rebellion Story (Warner Bros.) ¥290 million ($3.0 million) [129 theaters] Week 2
3 (2) Pretty Cure: The Dress of Hope Tied to the Future! (Toei) ¥275 million ($2.8 million) [199 theaters] Week 2
4 (-) Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (Fox) ¥200 million ($2.1 million) [327 theaters] DEBUT
5 (3) The Girl in the Sunny Place (Toho) ¥180 million ($1.9 million) [303 theaters] Week 4
6 (-) Jobs (Gaga) ¥130 million ($1.4 million) [99 theaters] DEBUT
7 (-) 42 (Warner Bros.) ¥125 million ($1.3 million) [159 theaters] DEBUT
8 (4) The King of Apology (Toho) ¥110 million ($1.2 million) [324 theaters] Week 6
9 (5) Now You See Me (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥90 million ($910,000) [182 theaters] Week 2
10 (6) Like Father, Like Son (Gaga) ¥85 million ($860,000) [307 theaters] Week 6
12 (7) Beyond the Memories (Toho) ¥80 million ($860,000) [266 theaters] Week 2
12 (-) 2 Guns (Sony) ¥80 million ($810,000) [199 theaters] DEBUT

I caution these estimates since they're 4-day estimates, and these weekends are really rare. They can only happen when a discount day (the 1st/14th of every month) or Holiday lands on a Friday, and that following Monday also happens to be a discount day or Holiday. So with all these factors at play this weekend, not accounting for theaters changing screens and showtimes from Friday-to-Saturday, some of them could very inaccurate. Actual numbers will be released tomorrow.

Anyway,

>SPEC: Close - Incarnation Part I exceeded expectations, debuting on par or maybe slightly ahead of the first film (Sat/Sun) despite this being only the first half of the sequel. Splitting the sequel looks to have payed off big time for Toho. They could be looking at a combined gross up to ¥5 billion ($50 million), when a single film would have likely earned ¥3 billion (low $30s) tops.

The second half opens in only 4 weeks (Nov. 29th). And since the second half does open soon, and having opened over a 4-day weekend (which includes the discount day), this part of the film will surely be frontloaded but should still reach ¥2 billion ($20 million) ahead of the opening of the next film.

>Magi Madako Magica and Pretty Cure are close in the estimates and I think it's highly likely the former wins in gross, while the latter wins in admissions with them having a drastic avg. ticket price difference of nearly 25% based on opening weekend admissions. Somehow, this 'Pretty Cure' film held extremely well in its second weekend (sub-20% over Sat/Sun at Toho locations) when most of the past films dropped at least 35/40%.

>Percy Jackson mostly disappoints, making only 55/60% over the 4-day versus what the first film opened to in 2-days. If estimates hold, it'll only make like ¥700 million ($7-7.5 million) at best. This isn't too unexpected since it took awhile for the sequel to be released, but the first film, while it opened well, had mediocre legs suggesting it wasn't too well-liked.

>2 Guns put up pathetic numbers.

9 (7) Beyond the Memories (Toho) Week 2
10 (-) 42 (Warner Bros.) DEBUT
11 (-) 2 Guns (Sony) DEBUT

>SPEC: Close - Incarnation Part I steamrolled the competition this weekend earning an impressive ¥457,993,900 ($4.7 million) and 345,921 admissions over the weekend frame on 290 screens. Since opening on Friday, the 4-Day total reached an even more impressive ¥882,690,000 ($9.0 million) and 740,000 admissions. This is the 3rd biggest 4-day total this year (behind only 'The Wind Rises' and 'Monsters University'), and the biggest for a live-action film.

>Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters disappoints in fourth place, grossing a mediocre ¥117,279,050 ($1.2 million) and 83,822 admissions on 629 screens over the weekend. The 4-Day total hasn't been released, but it's assumed to be in the neighborhood of ¥200 million ($2.1 million). This is certainly a weak debut and it'll be lucky to earn half of what the original film made almost 4 years ago now.

>42 rounds out the Top 10 making ¥54,284,400 ($556,000) and 43,320 admissions over the weekend on 159 screens. Likewise, no 4-Day numbers have been released for the film.

>Magi Madako Magica beats Pretty Cure in gross, but loses in admissions.

As for the the rest, it's been reported that as of Monday, Like Father, Like Son has earned ¥2.9 billion ($30 million) after six-weeks; The King of Apology crossed ¥2 billion ($21 millon) also after six-weeks, and The Girl in the Sunny Place is now up to ¥1.5 billion ($16 million) after four-weeks.

And I don't know what happened to Jobs. The only explanation I have is that given the low theater count of 99, most of them were located in the areas that report weekend estimates that greatly skewed how well it really did for the weekend.

-Bad Boys J: The Movie (Showgate) ¥35 million ($310,000) [90 theaters] DEBUT
-Mourning Recipe (Gaga) ¥30 million ($310,000) [126 theaters] DEBUT

The Kiyosu Conference, a comedy film featuring an all-star cast portraying Japan's first political meeting in the late-16th-century, is expected to have a strong opening and go on to also become one of the top grossing films of the year.

It's morning showings appeared solid, but as it heads into the afternoon, showings at many locations are beginning to reach half-capacity or better indicating it's attracting a pretty broad audience that is likely skewing older. I'm hoping for an opening over ¥500 million, but I'll project an opening a little under the mark.

And it's worth noting that Magi Madoka Magica is receiving numerous stage greetings today, and those showings are practically selling out. These could result in a great hold this weekend.

Saturday Estimates (11/09)

1. ¥253 million ($2.6 million), 0, The Kiyosu Conference (Toho) DEBUT
2. ¥125 million ($1.3 million), -44%, SPEC: Close - Incarnation Part I (Toho) Week 2
3. ¥117 million ($1.2 million), +28%, Magi Madoka Magica: The Rebellion Story (Warner Bros.) Week 3
4. ¥43 million ($440,000), -41%, Pretty Cure: The Dress of Hope Tied to the Future! (Toei) Week 3
5. ¥27 million ($280,000), -43%, The Girl in the Sunny Place (Toho) Week 5
6. ¥23 million ($240,000), 0, Bad Boys J: The Movie (Showgate) DEBUT
7. ¥23 million ($235,000), 0, Carry (Sony) DEBUT

14. ¥14 million ($145,000), -46%, 42 (Warner Bros.) Week 2
15. ¥9 million ($95,000), 0, Mourning Recipe (Gaga) DEBUT

Very good for The Kiyosu Conference. Sunday pre-sales are ahead of Saturday's too, so ¥500 million is looking possible. Certainly not a lock given estimates haven't been all too reliable as of late, but let's keep hopes up that we may finally get a live-action film debuting above the mark.

Magi Madako Magica clearly benefited from the stage greetings yesterday. It'll fall hard today, but the Saturday number might be enough to allow for a weekend increase.

Pathetic for RoomMate. The film is playing in almost 200 theaters (the equivalent of a film receiving a 2,250 or so count in the US) so the number is dismal.

And Percy Jackson's and The King of Apology's bigger drops may allow both Bad Boys J and Carry to make the Top 10.

>Estimates have The Kiyosu Conference beating SPEC's opening last weekend by 12%, and Midsummer Formula (currently the biggest opening live-action film of the year) by 10%.

Both of these figures puts The Kiyosu Conference just above the ¥500 million mark, which will make it the first live-action film (domestic or imported) in 14 months to open above the milestone! However, if the film skewed too old, it's avg. ticket price will be lower than than the comparable films, so I wouldn't call ¥500 million+ safe yet. Either way though, whether it opens as low as ¥450 million (very high senior turnout) or as high ¥550 million, it shouldn't have a problem reaching ¥3.5 billion ($35 million+) or possibly ¥4 billion ($40 million+).

>SPEC sees a slightly big drop in it's second weekend, but given it opened over a discount day/Holiday weekend, I'm actually a bit surprised it avoided a 50% drop.

>Magi Madoka Magica is looking at a great third weekend increase thanks to the stage greetings from Saturday. Stage greetings have become an important factor for many films this year.

>RoomMate rebounded some on Sunday, but still looks poised for a disappointing debut given the number of theaters it's playing in.

>Carrie and Bad Boys J rank higher than expected thanks to the holdovers seeing some steep drops due to post-Culture Weekend.

>Percy Jackson has one of the worst second-weekend holds of the year is estimates are accurate.

9 (-) RoomMate (Toei) DEBUT
10 (9) Beyond the Memories (Toho) Week 3
11 (6) Like Father, Like Son (Gaga) Week 7

>The Kiyosu Conference debuted on 430 screens to ¥483,716,600 ($5.0 million) and 386,994 admissions over the weekend. It's unfortunate it missed ¥500 million because now the 2013 Box-Office Year (Dec-Nov) will go without a single live-action film opening above the mark. However, the opening is still strong enough to be the top debut for a live-action film this year, as well as the biggest in 14-months.

Since the film skewed pretty old...
40-49 (31%)
50-59 (26%)
30-39 (20%)
60+ (13%)
20-29 (8%)
legs should be strong allowing at it to reach ¥3.5 billion ($36 million), and with some luck, maybe ¥4 billion ($41/42 million).

>Bad Boys J managed to break the Top 5 despite playing in just 90 screens. The film earned ¥80,189,100 ($818,000) and 58,820 admissions making it one of Showgate's best openings in recent years.

>Carrie settled for 7th-place, grossing ¥54,356,400 ($555,000) and 40,920 admissions over the weekend on 272 screens. This may seem like a poor debut, but it's actually rather decent given how terrible horror films do in the market.

>And finally, RoomMate really disappoints only making ¥47,673,400 ($487,000) and 35,795 admissions on 193 screens.

November is off to a strong start so far with SPEC: Close - Incarnation Part I and The Kiyosu Conference, and there is still The Tale of Princess Kaguya to come in two weeks, as well as SPEC: Close - Incarnation Part 2 the following week.

Hollywood has an empty November, unfortunately, with only Captain Phillips possibly doing alright business. They do have 47 Ronin and Gravity next month, though. I don't have much faith in Ronin, but Gravity could certainly breakout.

>Solid hold for The Kiyosu Conference, but I was hoping for a drop closer to 30% than 40% and making ¥4 billion ($40 million) a possibility. Estimates have however been shaky these past several weeks, so we'll see.

>Surprisingly strong hold for SPEC. I was expecting it to be a bit frontloaded given it is Part I and it's predecessor was also frontloaded, but its been holding very well. It's definitely going cruise past ¥2 billion ($20 million) at this pace. I'm guessing the good holds might be due to the majority of fans coming out to see the first film before Part II opens in just 11 days - November 29th.

>Not bad for The Counselor. If the estimates are accurate, it will finish with ¥500/600 million ($5/6 million).

>Magi Madoka Magica sees a big drop following it's boosted weekend last week due to stage greetings, but it will close to ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) after this weekend putting it in range to become Warner Bros. #1 film of the box-office year (Dec-Nov). It needs to beat Shield of Straw's ¥1.81 billion total.

>Fairly disappointing estimate for Don't Lose Heart. Legs will undoubtedly be strong, but with the small opening it won't be able to gross that much anyway.
