JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

At this point, only India has managed to keep the bigger share of box office for local films (still over 90%), despite the fact that the local release are on an average of the shittiest quality in the whole world. :P

I don't get this love for "songs". Why interupt the plot with music? Btw I like classical music but not operas.

Because the main plot is so small that it can be told in 30 minutes. To make the movie 2 hrs+, a lot of useless sub-plots and 5-6 songs are inserted. :)And quite a few people go to movies because of songs..... in most places outside India, movies are promoted on TV with 30-second spots, here they are promoted by 30-second song clips..... if a movie's music is successful, then the movie has a better chance of being successful as well.Movie and music industry are intermixed in India.... I don't like this but that is the way it has always been.

Well, that's weird.

It is.... sometimes I wonder if the shooting starts with one-page script, and then they just make stuff up as they go..... in the end they count how many minutes everything adds up to.... and then they add required number of songs to make a movie 110-130 minutes. :D

Russia, Japan and China are at totally different places in their development and their readyness for foreign cultural influence. At the moment Russia has surrendrered its film market to Hollywood. China tries every trick of a dictatorship to keep a functioning local production and Japan seems to reenacte the spirit of of the Tokugawa Shogunate towards foreign influences. Will this last?

Japan's population is very old, the world's oldest, and it's accelerating, and no immigration and very bad in foreign languages (though they try to improve their English because it's extremely important for their export prospects), so we can see Japan is becoming more isolated, nationalist, focused on itself. It's not a good omen.

Do you know American movies from the 40s and 50s?They were similar:10 minutes plot, then they suddenly started singing - 10 minutes plot .. and so on

Not yet, but Resident Evil was outpacing The Avengers on Saturday meaning it should definitely do over 500 million ($7 million) for the weekend. And with Friday included, the 3-Day will probably be around 700 million ($9 million).

proportionally better than DOM

Sept. 15-16

Weekend Estimates

1 (-) Resident Evil V: Retribution (Sony) ¥640 million ($8.1 million), 0, NEW

2 (1) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) ¥595 million ($7.6 million), -25%, Week 2

3 (-) Insight into the Universe (TOEI) ¥191 million ($2.4 million), 0, NEW

4 (2) Rurouni Kenshin (Warner.) ¥156 million ($2 million), -38%, Week 4

5 (3) Dearest (Toho) ¥98 million ($1.3 million), -35%, Week 4

6 (4) The Avengers (Disney) ¥92 million ($1.2 million), -34%, Week 5

7 (9) The Intouchables (Gaga) ¥69 million ($880,000), -14%, Week 3

8 (-) Key of Life (Clockworks) ¥63 million ($805,000), 0, NEW

9 (5) Prometheus (FOX) ¥55 million ($705,000), -43%, Week 4

10 (10) The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki (Toho) ¥46 million ($580,000), -27%, Week 9

'Resident Evil: Retribution's' estimate is using the same 3D share 'The Avengers' had opening weekend. If the 3D share is lower, then 'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' may have repeated at No.1 because it won the weekend in admissions with about 445,000 vs. 'Resident Evil: Retribution' at 415,000. Either way, strong start for 'Resident Evil: Retribution', just off from it's predecessor by 10% or so if estimates hold. It'll probably beat it's US total this time in Japan.

And that's a great second weekend hold for 'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL'. If the estimate holds, it's the biggest second weekend of the year. After 10 days, it should definitely be over ¥2 billion ($25-27 million) already.

Good debut for 'Insight into the Universe'. It looks like TOEI finally has a non-Kamen Rider hit live-action film this year.

Once again an excellent weekend for 'The Intouchables'. It's difficult to project limited releases, especially ones with incredible WOM like this one, but it's safe to say it has a long run ahead of it.

'Mirror Mirror' comes in just shy of the Top 10 in a very disappointing debut of ¥45 million ($575,000) with estimates. It's possible it edged 'Wolf Children' out of the Top 10 since they're nearly tied, but still very disappointing. No data for 'Finding Nemo 3D', but not unexpected because it's chances at opening in the Top 10 were extremely low anyway.
