JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

I really wanna curse. JAPAN is now one useless market.

Don't worry, new markets like Russia, latin america, China, Korea, Turkey, South Africa and so on...offset this decrease in Japan, it's even much more than that. In 10 years Russia, Mexico and Brazil will pass Japan in the BO market, so that will be very interesting for Hollywood movies. And the US market will grow too, at a slow pace but it will grow :)

If they are a small share of the population then who else watched ONE PIECE? Grandpas and grandmas!

No, adults in their 30s, many knew OP in their 20s so they still watch it, and OP fans are very dedicated, like Star Wars fans, OPZ is a frontloaded movie.

Either way, it's a shit result for Hobbit. Some Hollywood movies still manage $40m or more even today. Potter made over $100m last year. The market doesn't change that much in a year. They just don't give a shit about Hobbit.

It changed so fast. BRAVE failed there. It's a first from Pixar. CARS ll even made 38 M. Only two Hollywood films have made in the top 10 this year. Both failed to crack 50 M. Last year saw 4 Hollywood films in the top 10, all of which made 54 M or more. The same happened in 2010 and 2009, both years had 4 Hollywood films in the top 10, all made 50 M or more. Actually, 88% of One Piece readers are adults despite it is a manga made for teenagers (like every other shonen like Naruto, Dragon Ball, ecc...)http://www.saiyanisl...ans-are-adults/ Edited by eva

Very interesting! But I guess it's not so surprising because the Japanese population is so old now, young people can't have a big share of it.

Thank to Corpse again

The fact that's it's (The Hobbit) bombing though definitely hurts Hollywood for the 2013 box office year, and in turn is puts a dent in the overall year at the very start. Japanese films continue to increase their revenue, so that sort of cancels it out, but this could have been a significant boost to the year instead of breaking even more or less.

The only other release Hollywood has now that can achieve blockbuster status (over 5 billion yen) is Monsters University. And unfortunately for them, they still have it set for July where it's going to open very close to Studio Ghibli's double feature (one of the films directed by Miyazaki himself). Disney/Pixar need to move it to November or December where they've had great success before with Up and Finding Nemo, and limit the number of 3D screens drastically. Audiences in Japan are avoiding 3D showings like the plague.

One Piece Film Z expected to exceed 1 million admissions Opening Weekend (2 days).

http://eiga.com/news/20121216/1/

Confirmation of earlier reports.

Reported Facts:

>Saturday admissions topped 600,000.

>Saturday Box Office Proceeds reached ¥750 million ($9 million).

>101 screens (or 34% of total) were sold out nationwide by 7pm.

>650,000 tickets were sold in advance (60% increase over it's predecessor).

Also, distributor Toei is expecting the film to clear ¥1.3 billion ($16 million) for the weekend (2-day).

And since it seems to be pretty certain now that the film will indeed break 1 million admissions over the weekend, it's the first film to achieve this incredible accomplishment on opening weekend (2-day) since Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in 2007. And it's only the second local film to ever achieve the milestone, the first being Howl's Moving Castle in 2004.

What's with this sudden shift against Hollywood movies this year? They didn't seem to mind as much last year.

Corpse thinks it's to do with the audience becoming less accepting of 3D. Apparently Japanese films mostly eschewed 3D and are now going like gangbusters (and have been since the start of the year). Whereas Hollywood films are essentially locking people out because of the over-reliance on 3D.But, the overall trend over the past few years has been an increase in the Japanese share of the box office. The 3D issue must be accelerating the process.

What's with this sudden shift against Hollywood movies this year? They didn't seem to mind as much last year.

Japan is aging so quickly...Median age 45.Based on the Health and Welfare ministry estimation released in January 2012, Japan's population will keep declining by about one million people every year in the coming decades, which will leave Japan with a population of 87 million in 2060. By that time, more than 40% of the population is expected to be over the age of 65.In 2012 23% of the population is over 64.Number of births in :1950 : 2,337,0001990: 1,221,0002011 : 1,057,000So the number of young people is decreasing very fast, and it's the main target of Hollywood movies, old people prefer local movies, are less open-minded about foreign movies. Intouchables appeals to older audiences, it's certainly why it could do better than expected.Another reason too, it certainly plays a role :http://www.dw.de/nat...apan/a-16309783http://www.aspeninst...nline/node/2355
