The Universal Thread | Dreamworks Animation seeing layoffs, set to outsource their work

Recommended Posts

Paramount has MI, and Star Trek though. their problem is they had Marvel (at least distribution) and DreamWorks and let them both slip through their fingers, and haven't been able to fill the gap they left.

I can't believe Tull looked at that script and said FRANCHISE.

Tull's issue is not that he is a fanboy who has set up a studio, it is that he is a fanboy with a studio without any pre-existing IPs. When he was with WB, he got to play in the DC sandbox but he was shut out of that just before WB decided to go big with those characters. His original IPs are just not working out as we saw with Pacific Rim, and the biggest success he had with an IP he acquired was Godzilla.

So what you are saying is... he is fucked  Unless he learns how to play around with the studios instead of coming out saying he made Jurassic World.

I have the feeling Legendary will be financing 100% of Skull Island as well, WB will just distribute. But WB will then finance most of King Kong vs Godzilla (let's face it, the hook there is perfect for the GA) and keep the profits from that.

In this case, the general audience would be accused of having bad taste in wanting a "VS" movie between these 2.. There's just no way KONG survives a Radioactive blast.. It's not logical, even from a schlock standpoint for this movie.. He's at a MAJOR disadvantage with that, not to mention a 250 foot KONG and how on earth did something like this happen???

Just say that a 250ft Kong exists, and then don't bring that point up ever again. Pretty simple really. Audiences will go along with it if the movie is entertaining enough.

Probably not 100%. Maybe a 75/25 split.

I extremely doubt that will happen

I am not sure any Big Studio is anxious to sign with Legnedary, given how quickly they have worn out their welcome at Universal.

Tull made a big mistake with his claming credit for the sucess of Jurassic World, when Legendary had next to nothing to do with the actual making of the film...all the major creative decisions has already been made by the time they came on board....they were just permitted to invest in the film by putting up 25% of the cash. That is the kind of showboating that studio heads really resent. And it increases Legendary's rep as company that is good at "piggy backing" on IP's already owned by other studios, but having problems coming up with sucessful IP's on their own.

I can see a situtation where studios are willing to make a distribution deal with Legendary, but don't want to put up the money. A
