The Universal Thread | Dreamworks Animation seeing layoffs, set to outsource their work

Today Marks a Significant Milestone in Our History.

Today FURIOUS 7 will reach $1 billion in worldwide box office grosses. This is the first time in Universal’s 103-year history that we have had a film achieve this level of success in its first run. It will certainly exceed this number as well as have the distinction of being the quickest of any film to reach this milestone in just 17 days.

At Universal we have had franchises with strong results at the box office, including JURASSIC PARK, DESPICABLE ME and the BOURNE series, and although we take great pride in these accomplishments, what distinguishes FAST & FURIOUS is that it is an original live action concept with an entirely diverse cast. It is the only franchise of its kind to reach a total of MORE THAN $3.39 billion and counting.

On behalf of all of us, I am incredibly proud of the motion picture team at Universal, the cast and filmmakers of the FAST & FURIOUS for all they have done to take our original idea and evolve it into a huge, global, blockbuster franchise. When our friend and colleague Paul Walker tragically passed away in the middle of production, our team, led by Jeff Shell and Donna Langley, and the filmmakers along with the cast and crew did what they do best: They focused on family first; then talked to the fans; then got to work on making a great film that we can all be proud of. We were all saddened and honored to be a part of Paul’s final career performance and to celebrate his defining role in our lives. http://deadline.com/2015/04/furious-7-billion-dollars-worldwide-vin-diesel-1201411955/

Congratulations Universal!

Huh? First to 1B, 800M WW =/= 1B. Was just talking about how fast it took to hit 1B.

I wasn't being contrarian to anything you were saying. It wasn't a direct response really.

Also, $800/$900M WW in 1993 is definitely $1b. Adjusting for inflation.

Why is there always one person purposely being glib? As it says, F7 is their first film to hit $1 billion in its first run and they're obviously referring to raw grosses, not inflation adjusted numbers.

Yes it's obvious. I just wanted to point out that Universal (one of my favorite studios) has hit that mountaintop before, with JP. 22 years ago.

Universal Pictures today announced that the studio has grossed $5.53 billion, marking the highest-grossing year ever for a studio in industry history. In just seven months, Universal bested the record previously held by 20th Century Fox which ended 2014 with $5.52 billion. http://pro.boxoffice.com/latest-news/2015-08-05-universal-sets-a-new-all-time-record-for-worldwide-total-gross-by-a-major-studio

Universal set records for the fastest that a studio has ever reached:

$1 billion at the domestic box office;

$2 billion and $3 billion at the international box office; and

$3 billion, $4 billion and $5 billion at the worldwide box office.

In North America, Universal has five of the top eight openers of 2015: No. 1, Jurassic World ($208.7 million); No. 3, Furious 7 ($147.2 million); No. 4, Minions ($115.7 million); No. 7, Fifty Shades of Grey ($85.2 million); and No. 8, Pitch Perfect 2 ($69.2 million). These films also represent five of the top 10 highest-grossing films of the year. Universal has been No.1 at the domestic box office for 11 weekends, celebrated four worldwide No. 1 openings and has held the top spot at the international box office 12 times-all more than any other studio.

Jurassic World had the biggest opening weekend of all-time internationally, domestically and worldwide. It is the fastest film to reach $1 billion worldwide after only 13 days of release.

Illumination Entertainment's Minions earned the second-highest opening for an animated film in North America, the highest opening for an animated 3-D film of all time and the biggest animated opening day ever

Furious 7 is the highest-grossing film ever in China ($390.8 million) and the third-highest-grossing film at the international box office ever.

In its first weekend alone, Pitch Perfect 2 out-grossed the domestic lifetime total of Pitch Perfect ($65 million) and more than doubled its modest production budget. It was the highest-grossing live-action musical opening and the second-highest PG-13 comedy opening ever.

Great buzz with Everest? The trailer looks to me like it is gonna be an awesome IMAX movie.

IMAX & Arri have released a digital camera that allows filmmakers to shoot the entire

movie on IMAX format. Ari has that awesome 65mm digital camera that is forever

going to change large format photography.

I haven't been on here long, but I was wondering if someone could give the the lowdown on why some members on here root and have allegiance to Universal. Not knocking it at all, just hoping someone could explain it as without a backstory, seems kind of strange.

Thanks for any feedback.
