French Film Exports Grossed $104M In 2021; China Became Top Consumer

French film exports generated 91.4M euros ($103.6M) in 2021, a 5.5% increase on the previous year’s provisional figures, while admissions were up 8% to 14.8M. Comparatively, French films within France sold 39.2M tickets during the year. The figures were announced during the annual Unifrance Rendez-Vous with French Cinema which is taking place in Paris this week — one of the rare international gatherings in the current landscape that’s being held as a physical event.

Today’s numbers are provisional estimates and will be higher when they are trued up in the fall. For example, when originally announced in January 2021, the 2020 receipts were 86.6M euros, ultimately jumping to 101.7M euros when recalculated in November; a decline of over 60% versus 2019.

Interestingly, China in 2021 overtook Russia to become the leading overseas market for French titles in terms of admissions, partly owing to the fact that its cinemas recovered more quickly from Covid than elsewhere. Over 2.2M tickets to French films were sold in the market, a 908% increase on 2020 and good for 10.6M euros ($12M). Of that, over $4M went to Florian Zeller’s Oscar winning The Father, a minority French production, which released in June. After China, Russia, Spain, Mexico and Belgium round out the Top 5 offshore consumers of French pics.

Elsewhere, given sporadic theater closures and reopenings in various areas around the world throughout the first half of 2021, fragmentation complicated the planning and implementation of international launch strategies, Unifrance said. After a dismal 2020, admissions in North America were up 29.6%.

Last year marked the third time since 2000 to be driven by minority-French productions, which accounted for more than half of all admissions. During the first six months of the year, four films were largely responsible for maintaining a French presence on foreign screens, including The Father and Matteo Garrone’s Pinocchio, the only two which crossed the 1M admissions milestone.

In the latter part of the year, Cannes helped provide a springboard for majority French titles into the global marketplace. Highlights out of the festival include Palme d’Or winner Titane which sold 380K tickets in 32 offshore markets for a 2.73M euro ($3.1M) gross; opening night film Annette (300K admissions/43 markets/1.86M euros/$2.1M); and Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta (190K admissions/29 markets/1.52M euros/$1.72M).

Overall, the top majority French export of 2021 was animated adventure Around The World In 80 Days with 630K admissions (3.04M euros/$3.45M) in 17 markets. It was followed by family pic The Wolf And The Lion at 500K admissions (2.53M euros/$2.87M); Titane and Annette — the latter tying with biopic Eiffel in terms of admissions, although Eiffel was higher in grosses at 2.19M euros ($2.48M).

Local French comedy Kaamelott drew audiences in French-speaking markets with 281K tickets sold, including 121K in Belgium, for 2.66M euros. In milestones, adventure comedy/romance My Donkey, My Lover & I (aka Antoinette Dans Les Cévennes) became the biggest French-language hit in New Zealand since Intouchables 10 years ago.

Noted Unifrance today, “The future remains uncertain and unpredictable, but French cinema maintains its
presence on the international stage thanks to its rich and diversified offer, the high level of coproductions, its solid cinematic heritage, a sustained presence at festivals and on streaming platforms, and a tissue of French film industry professionals working on both production and distribution in close collaboration with foreign executives, many of whom have a great appreciation of all things French.”

Continuing their international rollout throughout 2022 are such titles as Aline – The Voice Of Love, Around The World In 80 Days, Delicious, Venice Golden Lion winner Happening, Lost Illusions, Pil’s Adventures and The Wolf And The Lion.

Also on deck are Venice Horizons laureate Full Time, Jean-Jacques Annaud’s Notre-Dame On Fire, Jacques Audiard’s Paris, 13th District, threequel Serial (Bad) Weddings 3, Gaspar Noé’s Vortex and Romain Duris-starrer Waiting for Bojangles.

Does anyone know the updated number of tickets sold by House of Gucci? Because here in Italy it will exceed 700k after this weekend, and although usually we sold half the tickets than in France I think this time we could be much closer

Damn not bad, here it has a chanche to move from the current 7th position to the 6th, but with less tickets sold than in Poland

NWH is now the biggest Spiderman movie at the French box office, it has surpassed SM1 (6.459M admissions) and is aiming for 6.65M admissions by tomorrow. I see it hitting around 6.8M by next week and its chances of overtaking AEG and the 7M admits are getting bigger and bigger (almost locked), as of now, 6.9M is locked ($62,5M)

Will be close to 6,8M admissions next week, then holidays 2 weeks after

I don't want to bring bad luck but 7M admits smell good for NWH

Bad news for France :

I completely forgot that a very popular French comedy "Super-héros malgré lui" is coming out on February 2nd. So there will be a little more competition for NWH and its drop should be heavier next week.

- 6.8M admissions tomorrow or Wednesday

- The holidays start in a part of France (1/3 of France) in 5 days

- AEG and 7M admissions locked

- SW8: 7,076,549 admits will be the last goal for NWH before the end of its run and it's on track to get there.

- Its final run could reach 7.1M-7.2M admissions

NWH will therefore enter the top 100 most viewed films in France in a few days and will also be the next biggest grosser of the MCU in France ahead of AEG and the first of the MCU to reach 7M admissions.
