I noticed that The Moon slipped behind Ransomed in walkups quite a bit, WOM must be meh for it to fall behind on OD.

oh wow... didn't know that the audience reaction was that good for Elemental but it does make sense, with the legs.

Total Presales for the upcoming days as of Wednesday 00:00

Elemental - 44,691 (-18% LW)

Smugglers - 112,979 (-53% LW opening day)

MI7 - 19,852 (-67% LW)

Ransomed (T-0) - 78,994

The Moon (T-0) - 95,989

  • Combined (T-0) - 174,983
  • 0.721x Smugglers T-0 -> 229k OD (combined)
  • 1.695x Barbie + Insidious T-0 -> 216k OD (combined)
  • 0.762x Barbie + Insidious + Conan T-0 -> 187k OD (combined)

Concrete Utopia (T-7) - 50,177

  • 0.804x Smugglers T-7 -> 256k OD

Oppenheimer (T-13) - 66,079

  • 3.256x Tenet T-13 -> 448k OD

Ransomed and The Moon should combine to be weaker competition than MI7, Smugglers and the Barbie/Insidious/Conan trio were when they opened so I think Elemental should still post a solid number tomorrow. MI7's presales are well down so I'm guessing it will lose even more screens to make room. Oppenheimer presales are insane and the highest out of ALL movies in local currency because of the PLF boost.

Total Presales for the upcoming days as of Thursday 00:00

(%Yesterday/%Last Week)

Elemental - 44,632 (-0%/-21%)

Smugglers - 124,618 (+10%/-25%)

MI7 - 20,419 (+3%/-59%)

Ransomed - 67,301 (-15%)

The Moon - 64,798 (-32%)

Concrete Utopia (T-6) - 54,202

  • 0.722x Smugglers T-6 -> 229.5k OD
  • 1.610x Ransomed T-6 -> 195.9k OD
  • 1.193x The Moon T-6 -> 106.4k OD

Oppenheimer (T-12) - 77,917, KRW 17,873 ATP ($13.75)

  • 2.744x Tenet T-12 -> 377.9k OD
  • 4.206x Ransomed T-12 -> 511.9k OD

Elemental will probably be close to flat Thu -> Fri. Smugglers is holding very well. The Moon will drop the most screens based on this PS drop.

Showings for Tuesday August 1

(%Yesterday/%Last Week)

Smugglers: 8,543 showings (+1%), 245,800 admissions (-3%), 28.8 PSA (-3%)

Elemental: 3,178 showings (+3%/-11%), 99,286 admissions (-7%/+45%), 31.2 PSA (-10%/+62%)

MI7: 2,430 showings (+2%/-55%), 58,890 admissions (-6%/-22%), 24.2 PSA (-8%/+74%)

Smugglers is holding well, releasing it just before the holidays was a good move.

Showings for Wednesday August 2

(%Yesterday/%Last Week)

The Moon: 4,740 showings, 89,166 admissions, 18.8 PSA

Ransomed: 4,673 showings, 121,704 admissions, 26.0 PSA

Smugglers: 4,179 showings (-51%/-54%), 193,169 admissions (-21%/-39%), 46.2 PSA (+60%/+33%)

Elemental: 2,035 showings (-36%/-12%), 76,289 admissions (-23%/+4%), 37.5 PSA (+20%/+19%)

MI7: 1,022 showings (-58%/-56%), 31,209 admissions (-47%/-59%), 30.5 PSA (+26%/-5%)

Wow, that's a ridiculously strong hold by Smugglers since it lost over half of its showings. This will be Elemental's toughest nut to crack. The Moon and Ransomed's numbers aren't too impressive for opening days at 4k+ showings, both should yield screens to the other holdovers over the next few days, especially The Moon.

CGV starts - Wednesday 00:20

The Moon - 27,000

Ransomed - 17,000

MI7 - 4,317 (-39%/-73%)

Admission starts - Wednesday 01:00

Smugglers - 54,452 (+2%/-61%, 1,037 screens)

Elemental - 29,496 (-18%/-4%, 714 screens)

The Moon - 48,528 (1,066 screens)

Ransomed - 39,336 (1,019 screens)

MI7 - 11,278 (-38%/-70%, 483 screens)

Conan, Barbie and Insidious get wiped off the map, the three combine for just 517 screens. Smugglers and MI7 take big damage, losing 38% and 35% of screens respectively. Elemental loses 20% and starts 4% down on last week. Bearing in mind last week was Culture Day I think it will be hard to beat last week's walkups with the screen loss even with the school holiday boost so maybe something like a 70k finish is what I'm guessing we'll see. CGV golden egg scores for The Moon and Ransomed will tell us how much this will effect Elemental in the long term.

CGV starts - Thursday 00:20

(%Yesterday/%Last Week)

Smugglers - 20,000 (-11%/last week's CGV start was bugged)

Elemental - 11,000 (-8%/n/c)

The Moon - 13,000 (-52%)

Ransomed - 10,000 (-41%)

MI7 - 4,108 (-5%/-43%)

Slam Dunk - 9,983

Admission starts - Thursday 01:00

Smugglers - 49,637 (-9%/+2%, 1,225 screens)

Elemental - 26,205 (-11%/-0%, 841 screens)

The Moon - 24,297 (-50%, 926 screens)

Ransomed - 24,384 (-38%, 984 screens)

MI7 - 10,264 (-9%/-37%, 497 screens)

Slam Dunk - 15,056 (94 screens) - hot dang that PSA will be big!

@Issac Newton here's your Slam Dunk re-expansion, Thursday seems to be anime day in SK lately, what with Conan massively overperforming on this day every week.

Should be a fun race for #2 today, I think Ransomed will take it but Elemental should beat The Moon if WOM is indeed toxic. Elemental already regained over 100 screens so it's a promising sign for the next week.

Seems like KoBiz have "fixed" the url trick as I can't see Aug 03's dailies anymore, so it's back to good old CGV for now 😢. The yearly chart indicates that Smugglers is at 133k for the day and Elemental 49k but that might have been updated a while ago.

CGV numbers as of 15:20 (using CGV start/admission start to get an estimate of the ratio)

Smugglers - 49,000 (40.3% -> 121.6k)

Elemental - 22,000 (42.0% -> 52.4k)

Ransomed - 24,000 (41.0% -> 58.5k)

The Moon - 23,000 (53.5% -> 43.0k)

MI7 - 7,708 (40.0% -> 19.3k)

Probably off by a bit so I'll check the ratio at the final update later.

I don't understand how this is a valid claim when Elemental, a movie center around a water girl, become such a leggy run. Zootopia, Frozen 1&2, all have strong feminist theme and they all succeed greatly in SK.

LOL, Elemental is a romcom. Romance is central including HEA for the couple and that's right up K drama alley. Barbie is not. It's a comedy about discovering yourself, both Ken and Barbie.

Haven't seen Zootopia but Frozen has a big romance plot (Ana and Kristoff). K entertainment is built on romance.

Again, ELEMENTAL is connecting to S. Korean auds because of the story. Their story, and not because one of the leads is a girl.

This is South Korea being a culture of misogyny. It's the reason why they are behind other OECD countries when it comes to gender equality.

I mean the current #1 movie is a female led blockbuster. And of course Kim Ji-young, Born 1982 did really well in Korea.

IMO, Barbie didn't do well because:

(1) Barbie isn't as culturally relevant in Korea. It was too expensive so people played with local brands like Mimi instead. Also apparently local brands appealed more to local beauty standards. (https://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/2012/03/29/features/At-30-Mimi-still-trounces-Barbie-in-Korea-/2950710.html)

(2) the humor doesn't translate well, especially when the subtitles aren't great - WB usually works with Park Ji-hoon who is infamous for his mistranslations
