Second best OD ever only behind Snowpiercer(595k).

But WOM isn't good.

Naver ratings:

HTTYD2:9.46

Apes 2:8.56

Kundo:6.80

Good point. A lot of local films disappointed quality wise this year. If it turns out to be the case for Kundo then it will get battered in it's second week by Roaring currents.

Animated films usually have high ratings so not surprised by HTTYD2's high score.

Kundo killed all the competition. It's strange because HTTYD2 had similar presales to Dawn of the planet of the apes prior to release and it's still hovering around a similar number on OD yet it's admissions suck for some reason. Kundo presales dipped by a noticeable margin while HTTYD2 increased by about 12.5% today. This may suggest that HTTYD2 is loaded towards the weekends when family audiences are at their strongest.

Yeah. Maybe HTTYD2 will recover in the next days. How many admissions did the first HTTYD movie had on its OW? Was it a 4-day OW?

Looks like a good increase for HTTYD2 on Thursday. Plus nice increase in presales. I think this will do well in South Korea :)

Kundo's audience reaction isn't very good and HTTYD2 might catch it up a bit throughout the weekend, then next week it faces Myungrang (local blockbuster) and Guardians of the Galaxy, then the Pirates (another local) the week after, and then Sea Fog (local..) following week. Hope HTTYD2 retains screens for family audience and pulls off 3M admissions.

Well, if Dragon 2 fails, we have at least good reasons for it.

In retrospect, releasing Dawn of the planet of the apes a week early was a stroke of genius. I don't think that it would have done nearly as well had it kept it's original release date.

True, and I don't think the 62% drops are that bad at all for a 3rd week, especially since the 2nd week drops were pretty much in the teens meaning its only about 70% down on its opening week tallies.

Yeah those are pretty normal drops for Korean box office. It could go one of two ways now, take advantage of the relatively weak opening of HTTYD2 and the bad audience reaction of Kundo, or it could get completely crushed by Roaring currents next week.

The presales for How to train your dragon 2 on midnight friday rose to 160,104. This is a higher figure than Dawn of the planet of the apes on the same day which had presales of 150,622 so there's reason to hope for a strong saturday and sunday turnout. Walk-up business seems to be weaker though with the majority of undecided people choosing to watch Kundo over HTTYD2.

I have to say though Dreamworks picked a really bad time to release dragons in Korea, squeezed as it is between the major summer blockbusters. The world cup period was probably more favourable time to release as Korea was eliminated early anyway (not the most difficult of predictions!) and there wasn't much in the way of competition besides EoT and a hard day. The lukewarm international reception did nothing to increase expectations either.

Maybe but Turbo was released last year on a similar date and did 1,9 mio admisisions against Snopiercer and weekdays will be much stronger now than in June.
