Another reason ASM is doing better than BB did is because Begins was the first of its type and provided the model that made movies like TASM possible. At that point, the fluffy, more happy-go-lucky style of Raimi's Spider-Man was the norm. It wasn't until Batman Begins that a dark, complex origin story became commercially viable. Casino Royale furthered that notion. Now, it's the established norm, and TASM is able to piggy back off of it.

Current Superman is not up there with SM and Batman maybe after MoS it will be.

I know, "Returns" disappointed, I meant as an overall BRAND, those are the Top 3. "Smallville" was a very popular show. If "MOS" can be good than Superman will be on the right track but right now I'd say as far as popularity:Domestic: Batman, Spidey, SupermanWW: Spidey, Batman, Superman Edited by filmscholar

If we're talking strictly film, I would put Iron Man over Superman at this point. MoS seriously needs to deliver the goods.

Shouldn't Lucas get more credit for popularizing the Reboot/Prequel with Episode I?

Superman could change that and also the Batman reboot could as well. Will see how it turns out in 5 years.

All Superman needs is the right film. SR clearly wasn't that, I don't like how DC seems clueless between Morrison's New Superman (which would be a brilliant take) and the more "classic" Superman to appeal to the films, I fucking hate Lois Lane's casting but I can live with it, all I'm hoping is that it's good enough to do the character's justice. I like the leading actorn and while I also think it's silly to use yet another used villain, I'm all for MoS next year.

Iron Man is more popular than Superman on Film right now for sure. But as a Brand, I'd still say Superman is more popular than Iron Man. Superman fans are waiting for their EPIC film and they will be out in full force. "Returns" was nothing more than a wannabe Donner rehash so it didn't do as well as it could of. Yet it still did well despite what people like to think. I think it flopped more critically amongst fans than the Box Office. 200 Million, 400 WW is very good for a reboot after 20 years. I'd just be careful over-stating the success of TASM's box office numbers. Comparing it to anything is out of context right now with the holiday helping it on day one. Plus, its not like one movie makes a brand more popular than another. Just look at Star Trek -- TASM might be able to reach that film's ticket sales in the long run, but you'd be hard-pressed to find many people who think Trek is as popular as Spider-Man. And Trek arguably had the bigger incoming stigma to its film.Every franchise is unique its own way.

I don't really think most people care about that. I remember after I came out from Batman Begins, and one of my squadmates stated that this fit in perfectly with the Burton films, because that one has the Joker in it, and this one ended with introducing the Joker. I was pretty much the only one aware that it was a reboot, probably even the only one aware of what a reboot was. Most people just don't care about this stuff.Numbers being low would seem to indicate indicate a lack of super-hype and "must-see" factor, which probably means this film won't be setting records in it's opening most places.

Wow. I was totally off on that last bit. All the negativity must have gotten to me.It already has opening records in India and the US (well, depending on how you count Transformers midnights, I guess?).I still believe in the first part though.

True, but TF1 was on the same weekend and managed 300M. Based on early Tuesday numbers can't deny 300M is in play and it would be a success.

"Man of Steel" will have a mountain to climb, I hope it can live up. Wow @ "Superman 1 and 2" adjusted, those movies did very well for it's time.

Shawn, I'm looking to the big picture and thinking similarly like filmscholar here. I firmly believe that The Amazing Spider-Man will already be at $300m or close to that once TDK arrives, and that doesn't mean that the legs of the film will be cut off, as long as there is a demand for The Amazing Spider-Man, theaters will keep screenings and I can see the film keep going for yet another $100m or mighty close to that after the release of TDKRIt's not about which film is better when it comes to reboots, it's about timing. And TASM's timing is perfect, especially for the fact that TASM and TDKR will appeal to different crowds.

Its marketing is going to have to kick in ASAP.

Being in front of The Dark Knight Rises (which it will be) is no guarantee to success. Watchmen and Terminator: Salvation (two of WB's huge 2009 releases) were in front of The Dark Knight and neither benefited.

But that's not about marketing, it's because Watchmen was a tough sell of a superhero drama with no recognizable characters and Terminator: Salvation fucking SUCKED. Marketing can't save bad films, or do miracles with tough sells like Watchmen.
