The musical grossed $14.5 million overseas from 1,014 locations in 17 territories, pushing its overseas total to $81 million. Key stats:In Japan, LES MIS dominated Saturday with 54% market share. The weekend estimate is $3.7M at 355 dates, up 25% over last weekend for a 17-day total of $25.2M. In Hong Kong, the weekend estimate is $850k at 35 dates for a total of $3.1M. In Korea, LES MIS is No. 2 behind local film, THE TOWER and ahead of the opening of LIFE OF PI. The weekend estimate is $4.3M at 268 dates for an outstanding total of $28.9M. LES MIS is holding strong at No. 3 in Australia's second weekend. The weekend estimate is $3.3M at 243 dates for a 12-day total of $14.2M. In Spain, LES MIS moved up a spot to No. 3 with a weekend estimate of $950k at 350 dates for a 13-day total of $6.5M. We have 46 territories to open over the next few months. So far, it has grossed $28.9 million in South Korea, $25.2 million in Japan and $14.2 million in Australia; all of these are strong grosses for a musical, and it's likely the movie will continue to play well as it expands throughout the rest of the world. "LES MISÉRABLES opened No. 1 in Korea (beating the opening for THE HOBBIT) where it has grossed $20.1 million at 599 dates in six days with previews. It’s the biggest musical opening of all time in Korea, Universal’s biggest opening day ever and Universal’s biggest film of the year" six days of previews? Les Mis opened December 19th!!!! riczhang Posted January 13, 2013 Share Posted January 13, 2013 It depends on if Les Mis gets a china opening. Besides India and China I'm fairly sure Les Mis will win in all the other markets. Whether or not it picks up an extra 100 million in these other places to overcome it's disadvantage of having no China is the big question. The global total is now $234.3 million. Key stats from Universal: In the UK, LES MIS was the No. 1 film in the market by a huge margin with 37% market share. The 3-day estimated gross is $13.4M (£8.3M) at 589 locations. The 3-day opening is Universal's biggest 3 ever in this market, the biggest for Working Title, the biggest opening for a musical and also for Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Tom Hooper. As a comparison, BRIDGET JONES: EDGE OF REASON was the previous highest grossing opening weekend for Universal and it grossed $13.2M (£7.1M). MAMMA MIA! opened with a 3-day gross of $10.4M (£5.6M). In New Zealand, LES MIS opened No. 1 with $625K at 81 dates, which is the biggest opening ever for a musical in this market. The Netherlands had an excellent opening at No. 2 with $632K at 114 dates, which is the second biggest musical opening behind MAMMA MIA!. Holdovers are strong. In Japan, LES MIS held the No. 1 spot of the MPAA films for the fourth weekend in a row and dominated the box office with 51% market share. It grossed $3 million at 328 dates, -8% for a 24-day total of $31.8 million. In Korea, LES MIS continued its amazing run, grossing $2.8 million at 408 dates, -34% for a 20-day total of $33.1million. The film was the biggest opening of all time for Universal in Korea. Spain moved up to No. 2 in week 3 and grossed $1.3M at 332 dates, +22% over last weekend's holiday festivities and parades.
