Read what Jett said on Batman-on-film all the way back to 2005:

"And it must be said that Batman Begins covers a lot of the same ground tread in previous Warner Bat releases, especially the 1989 Batman. In fact, it would almost be fair for someone to say that Begins could be considered a remake of the ‘89 Batman. Just consider the following plot summary, and decide for yourself which movie I am talking about --

“The film follows the first exploits if Batman, as he saves Gotham City from a deranged criminal who is determined to unleash a chemical menace on the city. Along the way, he employs an impressive arsenal of crimefighting equipment, including his futuristic car the Batmobile. In the end, Batman starts to gain the trust of the Gotham City Police, in particular the city’s most honest cop, James Gordon.”

Obviously, I’ve set you up – the plot summary works equally well for both movies! Now, I don’t personally view Begins as a remake of the ’89 Batman, I think the term “franchise restart” is a much more accurate description of the film. I am only pointing out this fact out because the similarities between the two films might lead the general public to be less intrigued by Begins than all of us Batman fans had hoped they would be."

All of this that you are saying happened to Batman Begins seven years ago too. Batman Begins is the best Batman film IMHO. The Amazing Spider-Man is the best Spider-Man film IMHO. The pay off for reboots always truly comes with the sequels, and I feel that TASM is a fantastic restart for Spider-Man's franchise, as good as Batman Begins was back in 2005.

To be fair to BB as a reboot was not common idea back in 2005. The GA had no idea what to think of it was it prequel or a remake or something else?

Yes, but the tone was MUCH more similar than between Batman Begins and its predecessors (that's why I said "even tone" because that was TASM's biggest difference--although it did have silly moments as well).

Completely disagree with this. The differences and similarities are there for those looking to find them. It seems pretty even to me.

I agree with what your saying, many good points. BTW I agree that TASM is easily the best (it smokes Raimi's films IMO) and I think the sequel will definitely pay off. Just was making the point that TASM is more similar to Raimi's films (albeit much better) than Batman Begins and its preceding films.

The summary really does show the strong similarities between Batman '89 and BB although it's not as obvious when watching them.

And now a reboot is a common idea why? Just geeks and in the know people understand them as reboots, most people see both of them as remakes. What leads you to think that reboot is common place now for the GA? It's not. And I doubt that ever will be. We'll see them as reboots, while they will see them as remakes, just like it was seven years ago.

Really? I would think most people would say TASM and Raimi's films are MUCH more similar to each other than BB and the Batman films which proceeded it. I didn't even think that was a question.

Yes, general audience is pretty ignorant. I remember my university had a free screening of BB in the fall of 2005. They sent an email to everyone announcing it and the description was that it was a prequel to B89. I responded to the email and told them it was in no way a prequel, that the murder of his parents by two different people made it impossible to be the same storyline. The school's response was that Warner Brothers gave them the description. Couldn't believe it. :o

Joe Chill should have been like, 'You ever dance with the Devil in the pale moonlight? See ya around kid' just to mess with the general audience.

The GA knew ASM was not a reboot. Most people I talked knew it was different story line a fresh start whereas BB everybody I knew thought it was a prequel. I think films like Casino Royale, Star Trek, X- Men First class. Have help the GA understand the these films are not being remade but being told different with their own story lines that are not tied into the previous films of that franchise.

I respect that you feel differently, but in my opinion they are as much different as they get, both Burton's and Raimi's takes to Nolan's and Webb's. And I think it's beautiful that regardless how much inspired TASM is by BB, Nolan and Webb have completely different approaches to these characters, both leading to an insane amount of repeat viewings by those that loved the films. Nolan relies a lot on exposition and that's his trademark, he does it in a way that I don't feel that dumbs down the audiences in BB and TDK, and I love the fuck out of that. Webb goes for subtlety, he tells the story without dumbing down the audiences to make his point across. There are a lot of things on TASM that are told without saying anything, relying a lot on the actors performances. Both have different styles and approaches, both are brilliant films IMHO.

I can't argue with that ha, love the passion. I hope Webb is locked in for a sequel and TASM will definitely live in my blu ray player for an extended period of time, a very extended period...

To be fair here, it did lose like a third of its theaters this weekend.

What makes this a very impressive number to me. It'll probably end the weekend with $255m, which is impressive taking in consideration in how many theaters the movie is in. It's getting close to cross BB adjusted too, I think, or it already happened, not sure. Some help, red?

BB is around $283m with 3D. $257m without 3D.
