Blade Runner 2049 | October 6, 2017 | Villeneuve directs | Full Trailer on Page 40

Recommended Posts

As I said earlier, it will all depend on the approach and tone they are choosing for this.

Blade Runner is a very slow film that would be ignored today, even more so than back in the day, it is only a cult movie in cinephile & sci-fi geeks circles, GA don't know much about the film.

Will it be Blockuster-ized, Dudebro-ized (It's Villeneuve, very likely),Disney-ized (unlikely, It s Dennis), JJ Abrams-Ized (a remake that won't be sold as what it is).

Place your Bets, Folks.

I think this'll break 200M.  The first Blade Runner is widely loved.

Alien was widely loved and the 1979 film made more than $250M adjusted today.

Look at Prometheus, did OK but nowhere near the original.

Villeneuve is on a roll. The cast is very impressive. I will be there.

And it probably did $80M to $110M DOM.

I'd argue that Blade Runner is far more widely loved than Alien (mostly since the sequels kind of left a bad taste in people's mouths).  And to the average filmgoer, Prometheus didn't even have the Alien name in the title and had no original cast members.  At least this brings back Harrison Ford.

Wait, already? Was it even two months? Seems like it will be not much action movie. Which is a good sign.

But what worries me is how little time after Arrival Denis had to prepare everything for this. Approve sets to build, concepts for everything etc. Hopefully this is very low on greenscreens.

Alien which has easily recognisable story & archetypes is definitely a much more audience-friendly type of movie, hence its advantage over Blade Runner's more cerebral themes & opaque storyline. Unless you are a serious cinephile, I don't think the average moviegoer would understand what director Scott is trying to get across. I have to trawl the internet & hit the books on film criticism to understand what the movie is trying to say when I first saw it as a teen.

Westworld Spoilers here.. open if you have already seen.

Spoiler

I don't know if Blade Runner 2049 can bedazzle audience with its grand themes of Orwellian technology, sentient beings and social control

when HBO Westworld, with only 6 episodes, has already got the Internet busy with wild fan theories & obsessive analysis.

The budget is def too high, but it can still be profitable. I think Fury Road numbers are achievable for this if everything goes right (good reviews, good marketing etc).

Here in Greece the original BR is closer to mainstream classic status than cult, but that may be due to the Vangelis connection
