2015 Discussion Thread: Universal wins the calendar year | SW: TFA - biggest film domestic, 3rd biggest film worldwide

Recommended Posts

As to the question of the thread, I don't think AoU is locked to win in all fronts. It has the most chances but DOM, Star Wars is a true competitor with 3D, inflation, the "return of the franchise and of the OT characters" effect. AoU could decrease a little from the first too (as often with sequels to massive successes). OS and WW, Star Wars isn't as big so Avengers has probably more chances to win there but Star Wars is kind of untested with the new internationnal markets  and it can be huge there too.

Avengers is certainly not locked to win domestically. It has a good chance, but using the word lock is basically saying Star Wars is guaranteed to atleast be the 2nd lowest ticket seller for a Star Wars movie. It only needs to sell as many tickets as ROTS and with 3d that would give it a total of around 550-560m, which Avengers may even struggle to reach.

There's no guarantee that TFA can sell as many tickets as ROTS domestically. The Hobbit couldn't match the box office of LOTR even with 10 years of inflation and 3D. Granted, the hype for TFA will be much higher (and hopefully it'll be a better movie, too) but I think OS is where you'll see a huge jump from the prequels, not domestic.

Except The Hobbit was about a bunch of dwarfs wanting to find some gold, the trailers showed no action and didn't give a single character for us to give a shit about. The teaser for SW has already shown that there is more fun to be had, not to mention SW has already proven itself to perform well when re-inventing itself. Sure, there is no guarantee it will sell as many tickets, but to say its locked for TA to beat it is just ridiculous.

AOU - 555M

JW - 295M

IO - 275M

Minions - 240M

Mi5 - 195M

http://www.ew.com/article/2015/04/15/summer-box-office-predictions-2015/3

These are poor predictions, they just give a figure then a plot synopsis. No explanation for how they reached that figure.

I wonder why they think Minions is going to gross so low.
