My friend watched the film in Taiwan and he was raving about both the film and Feng Xiaogang's performance. It has intense competition in China but I'm pretty excited to watch.

Interesting move. There are tons of competition for the summer.. Guo Jingming's L.O.R.D. and the movie version of the Grave Robbers. Not sure how Mermaid will fare because they've done very little promotion for it and little is known about the movie itself. It's Stephen Chow and of course having Deng Chao as lead helps but, we'll see.

Still believe Mermaid will be #1 movie of 2016. Summer 2016 probably see L.O.R.D (Fan Bingbing, Kris Wu), The Lost Tomb (Lu Han, Jing Boran), 3 Body Problems (Feng Shaofeng), Monk Xuanzang (Huang Xiaoming), A Chinese Odyssey 3 (Han Geng, Tang Yan), Cold War 2 (Chow Yun Fat), The House That Never Die 2,...

Bad hold for MJ2, over 30% drop, under MJ1 final total is a sure thing. Less than $30M(-20% FROM MJ1)?

Spectre will not make much more than 550M yuan($86m).

I believe Kris Wu is also in Mermaid. As for summer, there will also probably be a couple of youth films here and there. Mermaid will be interesting. The Chow movie I'm looking forward to the most though is Journey to the West 2 which is slated for 2017 CNY.

MJ2.................that's a disastrous BO for such a high profile Hollywood film......................but no one outside of North America really cares for the Hunger Games films.

These chaps know what they're talking about when it comes to predicting how the Chinese box office goes. Spectre is a 'relative' disappointment in China in that this is not hitting even $100 Mill there, even after all that extensive promotion. To me this Chinese under performance effectively rules out a Billion $ box office WW for Spectre.

 

Well, I don't think that it is a case if 'No one outside of NA' cares about the HG Franchise. The previous films did relatively well in Europe, but yes, they probably don't have as wide an audience as some of the better known Franchises. Plus this is a case of sequel fatigue kicking in. Lionsgate will still make money from this, maybe just not as much as they'd have wanted to.

Anyway..........its still a positive result for SP in China...........and hopefully with the more exposure to Bond in China............it will do better with the next film, if the writers can come up with a more engaging story.........it does show anyway that we in the UK can compete with the more childish films from the US!

1. Bond is an American financed, produced and owned franchise even if he is a British icon filmed mostly in the UK.

2. Spectre (and Bond for the most part) is pretty silly stuff even if the audience skews old.

3. It's legs were horrendous in China.  It might not hit a 1.8 multiplier

To be fair, he said childish, not silly. Bond isn't childish, more like stunted adolescent.

Spectre looks like a similar case to Misssion Impossible 5, a bigger percentage increase actually (in USD terms at least, not sure what the yuan totals were for MI4 and B23).

 

Bond gets about a 45% increase.  M:I got a 35% increase.

Elated to see a Taiwanese film doing so well. It's about time they shift to grow both commercial and artistic film genre.

Production wise, Door Gods and Da Hai （Big Fish & Chinese Flowering Crabapple）are much more expensive than Crazy Nian, aka Mr. Nian.

 

1.1- ---- Little Door Gods

1.16 ---- Boonie Bears 3 

1.29 ---- KFP3 

2.8 ----- Mr. Nian

 

It's a very crowded schedul so some maybe every of them wont achieve the full potential.

 

But with Da Hai, Mermaid and more, 2016 looks to be the breakout year for animations and family movies. Monsters Hunt and TMK in 2015 should be just the beginning.

 

Many industry people claim the next five years to be the age of Chinese homegrown sci-fi films (dozens are already in development).

 

Homegrown genre films in China:

Wuxia ---- an iconic but pretty much dead genre, like Western in Hollywood

Comedy ----- currently the best developed genre (Ning Hao- Xu Zheng- Huang Bo, Wang Baoqiang-Chen Sicheng, Da Peng-YiShow Joy (Unimedia), Shen Teng-Yan Fei (Happy Mahua Pictures), Deng Chao-Yu Baimei, and of course legends like Stephen Chou, Wang Jing, Feng Xiaogang-Ge You, are the top talents)

Romance ---- everywhere but no classic movie has been produced

Youth/coming of age ----- no decent movie has been made yet the best days are half gone

Action thriller, crime drama/thriller ----- steadily uprising 

Animation/family ---- just is starting to boom

Sci-fi/fantasy ----- to boom in a few years 

Horror ----  SARFT tells you to forget about it

costumed epic and war pics will never be too popular I think

 

But overall things are getting better each day.
