numble
Any truth to this article: http://www.breakingviews.com/china-box-office-boom-loses-movie-magic-up-close/21220019.article Yet as with many Chinese statistics, the numbers may not be as dazzling up-close. The likes of Wanda Cinema Line, which is China’s market leader with 191 theatres, report box office takings based on the full ticket price. But many tickets bought online are sold at a discount, with cinemas and online sites often subsidizing the difference. So users of Wanda’s site can currently buy movie tickets in Beijing at up to 40 percent less than the regular price. Meanwhile, discount sites, such as the Alibaba-backed Meituan, are selling tickets at certain cinemas at almost 80 percent off the full price. This matters because half of all movie tickets in China are now bought online. It’s not unusual for cinemas to offer discounts to boost audiences. And it’s far from clear what proportion of ticket sales are subsidised by cinemas and web groups. What seems certain, however, is that subsidies are flattering the growth in the headline box office numbers. Though a growing number of Chinese people are going to the cinema, the boom may not be as much of a blockbuster as the statistics suggest. A Marvel Fanboy
Any truth to this article: http://www.breakingviews.com/china-box-office-boom-loses-movie-magic-up-close/21220019.article That article is getting so wrong. The box office numbers , which often reposted in the thread, reported daily is basically real (except a few special movies like The Hundred Regiments Offensive). The only official ticket price that matters is the one printed on the movie tiket that theaters offer to you at the box office; the numbers on the printed tickets adds up to the total box office of a movie, which is being reported on a daily basis by the official agency. The numbers on those ticketing sites and the numbers shown at the box office do not matter; they don't add up to the total box office of a movie but only decide how much a buyer pays for the ticket.
Ay72998
Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno getting so many showtimes has to be one of the most bizarre things I think I've ever witnessed at the Chinese box office. Can someone explain to me why? That film came out in Japan in April, six months ago, and it was a moderate hit, but nothing like Doraemon. Moreover, it seems the audience reaction is not very good. It currently has a 5.6 rating on Douban (it seems many in China have already watched it online since it has been out for so long and the reaction is not good) and a 6.2 rating on IMDB. So why would theatres give so many screens to a 2D animated film that really has no indication of it being a potential blockbuster and that many people have already seen it? Also look at the fact that The Little Prince didn't even get nearly as many showtimes, and it got very good reaction from the audience (8.3 rating on Douban). So to think that Detective Conan is going to take away almost all of The Little Prince's showtimes come Friday (looks like its going to drop from 14% to 4%)... POTUS 2020
I think the drop will be just 50-55% on sat/sun. Its dailies are holding well, looking for that 40/80% pop, Th 22m/ Fri 31m/ Sat 55m/ Sun 43m, better than -50% if plays out this way, still a good hold if it does 35/70%. It will still have 25% of screens Pan's presales only at 3.4m. Just a 7-9m OD. Im sure itll bump close to 100% on sat but Sat/sun will be lower than IO's OD/2ndDay. Poor performance for 20% of screens, it will drop to 12% tomorrow. Conan will have 18-20%

Archerdude
Marvel announced Ant-Man 2 BEFORE the first movie opened in China. It was like they already knew how big it was going to be in China... Crazy. I doubt one had to do with the other, they independently decided on the sequel but probably thought China would at least be decent...just it is more than decent now.
