China Box Office Weekly (6.4~6.10) Report

Talking Animals Couldnot Stop Men in Black

Sony and Will Smith's sci-fi comedy Men In Black 3 won three weeks in a row, drawing in $15M (94M yuan), with a total gross of $67.5M (427M yuan), fourth highest this year now. 500M yuan is right in signt.

Dreamworks animation's Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted debuted solid 57.5M yuan ($9.1M), a second best opening for the studio, from the 3 days weekend. 200M yuan ($31M) may not happen with this opening, but #3 all time grossing animation after the two Kungfu Panda films is already in the bags.

Marvel's the Avengers repeated #3 with 15M yuan ($2.4M), down 50%. The superhero action flick climbed to the $90M milestone at its 7th weekend.

Relativity's snow white film Mirror Mirror fell to the fourth place with 12.6M yuan ($2M), down 58% while Aardman Animations's The Pirates! Band of Misfits stepped out of top 10.

Martin Scorsese‘s 3D masterpiece Hugo placed #8, bringing its cume gross to 20.1M yuan ($3.2M).

Not at all. Very few films can manage 3x or more multiplier from 4 days opening in China.

THG had 3.6 multiplier in HK, 2.9 multiplier in Singapore, and those markets are more frontloaded. Of course, the Chinese government can always decide to pull it from theaters after the OW, but otherwise I expect it to have a very leggy run.

THG OW in China is 4 days, which should make a difference.
