China Box Office Thread | Oppenheimer-August 30

Nobody discuss about Running Man which opened today and took $11M?

You mean an 88 minutes long big screen TV show that cost just 5 million yuan to make, nabbing a pathetic 3.1/10 on douban but could ultimately earn as much as 500m yuan at the box office ... man, this drives real Chinese filmmakers mad.

That's good. It is already the highest grossing Hindi film of all time, so anything it makes in China is a bonus. Russia used to get a lot of Hindi movies back in the Soviet Era, Raj Kapoor even made references to Russia and shot movies in Russia (of course, this is back when the Indian political system was the stupid Socialistic Republic system). Wonder why Bollywood stopped tapping into Russia as an audience.

Following the success of Miss Granny in China, two more Korean films Architecture 101 and Cyrano Agency are being planned to get a remake in a joint collaboration effort between studios of the two countries. I really loved Architecture 101, it's one of my favourite film of the romance/comedy genre so I hope they do a good job with the remake.

The Miss Granny remake was a good movie, it was a bit overlong, the ending felt weak but overall movie was quite enjoyable and got some very successful changes from the original Korean script. It also marks:

1.) Director Chen Zhengdao builds his career even further as a qualified young filmmaker.

2.) Actress Yang Zishan's career break-up performance. Could be one of the next A-lister.

3). The 90s generation young stars like Lu Han can already put butts into theaters.

4). The "one script, two movies" strategy worked and looks to be a popular co-producing trend between SK and China.

Many talents from South Korea are already seeking opportunities in China. In fact, hitting adaptations of reality TV show like Dad and Running Man in some way could be seen as byproducts of Korean pop culture in China.

Filmmakers around the world could find their opportunities in the biggest film market soon-to-be but it looks (only) those from Greater China, Korea and America will be the most successful.
