Jake Gittes
Based on actual reactions, Cuaron and the Coens seem like the strongest shots at the moment. I doubt either of them win, but right now I feel most comfortable giving them two of the spots. Oh, and how about a Benh Zeitlin-like out-of-nowhere nominee at the expense of a thought-to-be-easy contender like Affleck or Bigelow? Come on, Academy, forget DOR and Scorsese, go for Richard Linklater!

And DGA announces like 5 hours before Oscars are due, so we could see another surprise.

Jake Gittes
Greengrass seems to be a pretty strong contender for a nom based on the first reactions. Not a lock, but close. Edited September 7, 2013 by Jake Gittes
ToddThatcher
i got Cuaron and McQueen as locks and the rest of the field quite unclear. right now, i'm going with Russell, Howard, and J.C. Chandor. http://toddmthatcher.wordpress.com/2013/09/10/early-oscar-predictions-best-director/

riczhang
Rush no good?I think the better question is if it even is happening. I doubt Formula 1 connects with anyone in the Academy. (well obviously a hyperbole but my point still stands) I'm thinking1. McQueen2. Frears3. Coens :wub;4. Cuaron5. Chandon or Fadhari as the WTF (but logically Greengrass or Rusell maybe)

TLK
Rush may not be happening but Howard is the sort of guy who can get the last Best Director slot. Popular guy with the AMPAS voters and a guy who just made a very well-received movie. Edited September 18, 2013 by TLK
