Ever since that night the friends have been plagued with horrible nightmares, and have taken to telling each other ghost stories. At one of their meetings, Sears tells them a The Turn of the Screw-like ghost story about when he was a young man. Before deciding to attend law school James had taken a teaching position in a rural community. He developed a fascination with one of his students, a young boy named Fenny Bate. Fenny and his sister were ostracized by the community, and upon making some inquiries he finds out why. The two children once had an older brother named Gregory, and it was generally believed that Gregory sexually molested his young brother. The parents of the siblings were dead, and Gregory was their guardian. One day while repairing a roof Gregory fell off the ladder and was killed, and someone thought they saw the two young Bate children running away from the scene. Sears tells his friends that in time he began to see a threatening young man hanging around the school, and he eventually comes to believe it to be the spirit of Gregory Bate. Sears attempted to save Fenny from the clutches of his dead brother, but to no avail. Fenny died, and Sears was legally obligated to finish out the school year and then he left the small community.

The next morning after telling his story Sears and Ricky are called out to the farm of one of their clients, who has found some mutilated livestock in his field. Later in the car Sears reveals to Ricky that the previous night's story was not fictitious, but had actually happened to him in his youth. Sears also admits that he is scared, as are all the members of the Chowder Society. They decide to write to Edward's nephew Donald Wanderly, as Donald had written an occult film and they think that his research abilities might be employed to good use on their behalf. Before Donald can arrive, however, Jaffrey dies in an apparent suicide by jumping off of a bridge.

Donald arrives just as the funeral is coming to a close. The three remaining members of the Society tell him that they want him to investigate any possible avenues that he might deem appropriate. Several years previously Donald's twin brother David had died under mysterious circumstances, and it led him to write his horror film. Donald tells them the story of what he thinks actually happened. Several years previously he had landed a teaching position at Berkeley on the strength of his first film. While there he began seeing a beautiful grad student named Alma Mobley. At first he was inseparable from her, and there was talk of marriage. But over time he began to notice strange things about her. He described it as more of a sensation, but he felt that there was something unnatural about Alma. He stopped seeing her as much, his work suffered, and one day Alma simply vanished. Upon investigating he found out that a great many things that Alma had told him about her past were fabrications. A few months later David called him and told him that he and Alma were engaged, and that he wanted things to be right between Donald and his fiance. Donald tried to warn David, but to no avail. And soon thereafter David was dead.

Not long after this Lewis Benedikt dies in the forest, and Sears and Ricky decide that is time to tell Donald the most terrible story that the Chowder Society knows...and it is a true tale. 50 years previously a young woman named Eva Galli had moved to the town. She was in her early twenties and all five of the young men fell head over heels for her. One night in 1929—not long after Black Monday -- Eva came to see them, but she was not acting like herself. She made sexual advances and belittled them. There was a struggle, and Eva fell and hit her head. Believing her to be dead, they conspired to hide the body by putting it in a car and driving it into a deep pond. But at the last moment Eva's body disappeared from the inside of the car, and there was a lynx looking at them from the other bank.

Donald begins his research and quickly comes to the conclusion that what they are dealing with is a manitou, or some other kind of shape-shifting creature. He also believes that Alma Mobley is actually Eva Galli. Donald theorizes that since these creatures live much longer than humans Eva waited fifty years before returning for her revenge.

Donald, Ricky, and Sears are joined in their struggle by Peter Barnes, a young man whose mother was killed by these creatures. Sears is ambushed and killed in his car, and the survivors now realize that Gregory and a reanimated Fenny are helping Eva in her endeavors. Gregory tells them that a woman named Florence de Peyser helped resurrect him, and it seems that Eva is also subservient to the de Peyser woman. Gregory and Fenny attack Peter, Don, and Ricky in a movie theater, but they are both killed in the ensuing struggle, leaving Donald to realize that though they have other-worldly powers, the creatures are not truly immortal. The survivors track Eva down and defeat her, but she escapes.

Exhausted, Ricky leaves Milburn for an extended vacation with his wife, and Peter prepares for college. Donald keeps watch to see what form Eva will next appear in, and believes it to be the little girl in the opening part of the book.

While in Florida Eva emerges from the form of the little girl and attempts to twist Donald's mind. He is able to resist and kills her after she tries to take the form of a wasp to escape. Donald then prepares to go to San Francisco to hunt down the de Peyser woman. *credits*

Wings Of Icarus

Genre: 2-D Animation/Fantasy/Romance/Comedy/Musical

Cast: Vincent Martella, Ariana Grande, Leonard Nimoy, Robert Carlyle, Tom Hiddleston, Mandy Moore, Scott Weinger

Plot:

The film begins by showing a stunning view of Crete with birds soaring amongst the clouds and over the hustle and bustle below. Finally we see Icarus (voice of Vincent Martella) sitting against a tree and looking up at the birds, wondering how he could possibly soar so high through the clouds. A voice rouses him from his daydream. It’s Ariadne (voice of Mandy Moore), the beautiful princess of Crete and one of Icarus’ best friends, we learn that Icarus has had a crush on her for quite a while and that one of the reasons he wishes to fly so much is to impress her. However, Ariadne only has eyes for Theseus (voice of Scott Weinger), Icarus’ best friend since childhood and the best soldier in King Minos’ army. We are also introduced to Daedalus (voice of Leonard Nimoy), Icarus’ father and Minos’ chief architect and scientist. Daedalus has been trying to dismiss his son’s ideas about flight, but he still seems to support his son even if he thinks Icarus is being silly. After the opening scenes, we learn that King Minos (voice of Robert Carlyle) is gathering an army for an invasion of the nearby island of Thera and that he expects Theseus to lead his invasion squad. He says that Thera is planning to strike first and that Crete must defend itself with a pre-emptive assault. Icarus wants to join the army (to impress Ariadne) and he believes the flying machine he’s been building can be used to drop projectiles on Thera from above. That night, we see Icarus working on his flying machine. He falls asleep just as he finishes it. The next morning, Icarus wakes up and heads out to a small cliff on the beach to test the device, the song “I Will Soar” is performed here as Icarus prepares to take flight. Just before he actually tests the device, however, Ariadne comes to get him to tell him that they’re seeing the men of the invasion force off. Icarus comes out to the training field where Minos is giving an inspired speech to his men. Icarus asks to demonstrate his flying device, to which Daedalus objects, taking one look at the contraption and knowing it’s not going to fly. Icarus however insists, and mounts a nearby parapet to demonstrate. He takes off and for a second it seems like the device will work, but the winds change and he crashes to the ground. It’s embarrassing, but fortunately he’s not hurt. Icarus looks around to see the people (even Ariadne) laughing at him. The king tells Icarus that his enthusiasm is inspiring but that if he really wants to help, he’ll start training for the army and maybe he’ll be strong enough for the next war. Theseus and the other soldiers depart for Thera.

Meanwhile, we see a small village on the coast of Thera, which lies at the foot of the island’s massive volcano. The village is a peaceful place and it’s clear that there is no danger from its residents as only a few friendly guards form the island’s “army”. We see a teenage girl, Corinthia (voice of Ariana Grande) gathering fruit from the volcano’s fertile topsoil to sell at market. Her mother and father are farmers and Corinthia (referred to as Cori for the rest of the movie) is their only child. We see a scene of the village that establishes Cori’s sweet, friendly personality and love for her parents and the people of the village. The scene is punctuated by an upbeat light-hearted song, “Gathering The Daily Fruit”, sung by Cori and the villagers. The scene then switches to nighttime on Crete, where Daedalus is chewing Icarus out about how he could’ve been killed and that he should never try to fly again. Icarus is left despondent when Ariadne comes over to try and comfort him. Icarus is mad at her at first (asking if she just came over to laugh at him again), to which she apologizes and the two of them begin to speak. They both express worry about Theseus and Ariadne tells Icarus that she thought his flying machine was very nice. After a quick conversation which ends with Icarus and Ariadne embracing (though it’s clear Ariadne sees Icarus only as a friend), Icarus leaves and we see Ariadne walking back to the castle. She asks her father about Thera, how dangerous its armies are and if an invasion is really necessary. Minos assures her it is and tells her that this war is for the good of Crete’s people. Ariadne goes to her room and sings “Until You Return”, a song expressing her worry about Theseus and her hope that he’ll come back. After a brief scene of Theseus onboard his ship, we see another scene of Icarus and Daedalus. Daedalus is hard at work designing a structure to be built beneath Minos’ castle. It’s some kind of maze, which Daedalus says is to hold soldiers captured during the war. He apologizes to Icarus for yelling at him but insists he doesn’t try to build another flying machine. Icarus goes outside and we once again see him observing the birds, wondering if perhaps humans could fly if given wings to do so. He secretly begins designing wings to mount another flying attempt.

Back on Thera, we see another scene of Cori out picking fruit on the mountain when she notices a large group of boats heading toward the island. She rushes down to the village down the mountain path only to see her village in flames after being hit by massive amounts of fire arrows. Cretan soldiers are pouring into the village, slaughtering everyone they see. In horror, Cori rushes home to her parents’ house. Meanwhile, we see Theseus easily fighting off attacks from the village guards, only to realize that they’re not really that well equipped to fight back. He sees one of the guards cowering beneath him and refuses to strike a killing blow, insisting that the other soldiers with him do the same. One of the other captains, a man named Laceus (voice of Tom Hiddleston) confronts him, saying that King Minos gave orders to wipe out the entire village. Theseus says that these villagers and the guards aren’t soldiers and that there’s no way Thera was raising an army to attack Crete. Laceus insists that orders are orders and that no prisoners are to be taken. Theseus disarms Laceus and demands that the other soldiers stop attacking. Meanwhile, we see Cori at her home, which has burned to the ground. Her father has died of a fatal wound. Her mother is trapped beneath burning wood and though Cori is able to pull her out, she dies of smoke inhalation, telling Cori with her dying breath to run as fast as she can. She tries to run but soldiers approach, coming to kill her. She uses a burning stick of wood to fight one of them off but there are too many and she is held in place to be executed. Just as she is about to be killed, Theseus comes over and pulls the soldiers away. Telling the men that “we’re done here”, Theseus forces the other soldiers to return with him to the boats. The soldiers sail away, leaving Cori and a few surviving villagers in their still-burning village. Back on Crete, we see a montage of scenes of Icarus working on his wings while Daedalus finishes the king’s maze and Minos’ soldiers hastily construct it. A few days later, Icarus is still working on his wings when he is interrupted by cheers and the sight of people rushing down to the shore. The soldiers have returned surprisingly quickly, prompting Daedalus to remark how short a war it was (the men were barely gone two weeks). We see that Theseus is very troubled as he makes his way toward the king’s palace for the victory celebration. There is a scene of Laceus and King Minos talking in private as Ariadne and Theseus embrace. As Icarus watches, the two of them share a passionate kiss, discouraging him somewhat, though this only serves to prompt him to work on his wings even more. Back at the palace, after Minos gives a short speech, he approaches Theseus at the party, and Theseus says he wishes to speak with Minos in private as well. Theseus expresses his concerns that the invasion was merely an attack on a defenseless village, and Minos seems to understand these concerns. He then orders the guards in, commanded by Laceus, to have Theseus hauled off. Minos accuses Theseus of treason for sparing some of the villagers and sentences him to be the first prisoner of the palace’s new labyrinth, which is said to be impossible to escape. Ariadne confronts her father, begging him to have mercy on Theseus, but Minos tells her that his fate is none of her concern and that she should not have gotten involved with a traitor.

Ariadne tearfully begs Daedalus to help Theseus. Daedalus decides to give Ariadne the only copy he has of a map of the labyrinth, which Ariadne manages to sneak to Theseus in his cell before he is taken to the labyrinth below. With the help of the map, Theseus makes a narrow escape from the labyrinth, though he is almost killed by the Minotaur, a massive monster Minos had captured to kill anyone trying to escape. Theseus goes to Ariadne and tells her that he has to leave Crete or he could get her in trouble as well. She begs to leave with him but Theseus refuses to allow it, setting out on a boat and promising to return to her once it’s safe. Laceus spies on the two of them together and goes to Minos with the news. Minos knows that Ariadne helped Theseus but knows that only Daedalus could have provided Ariadne with a way to escape the labyrinth. As Icarus completes his wings, we see soldiers arriving at Daedalus’ house. They arrest Daedalus and Icarus and the two of them are taken to a deserted island in the middle of the Aegean Sea. After this, we see King Minos, Laceus, and his other captains discussing their plans to occupy Thera completely. There is another, larger town on the other side of the island where the refugees from the near side must have fled. Minos wants to clear these people out to gain access to the volcano. Not only does the volcano have fertile soil, but it is said to be home to Hephaestus, the god of fire and industry. With Hephaestus’ forge, Minos will be able to raise an army to conquer all the world. Ariadne despairs at hearing this and at the fates of her friends Icarus and Theseus. She decides to set out from the island to hunt Theseus down, knowing he’s the only one who can stop her father’s evil plans. Meanwhile, it’s been several days and Daedalus and Icarus are growing weak from hunger. Icarus realizes that the only way he’ll be able to get off the island and save his father and himself is to fly. He manages to rebuild his wings using material from the island, but Daedalus tells him he’ll never be able to fly. …at least not with wings like that. Using his master craftsmanship to help his son, Daedalus and Icarus construct a set of wings for Icarus to use. He warns Icarus not to fly too close to the sun or the wax in the wings will melt and Icarus will plummet into the sea. Icarus runs to the largest cliff on the island and leaps from it… and just before hitting the ground, the wings give him lift and he’s into the skies. It’s a beautiful scene as Icarus soars over the island and over the sea, singing a reprise of “I Will Soar” and enjoying every moment of his flight. However, as he flies higher and higher, the sun beats down on him and the wax in his wings begin to melt. The wings begin to come apart and Icarus plummets toward the sea. He lets out a scream of horror and crashes, everything fading to black.

There is a scene of Ariadne out on a raft on the sea, she begins to talk to herself, saying that she’s foolish for trying to find Theseus as she has no idea where he even is. However, she does spot an island nearby and sees someone on the shore. Thinking it’s Theseus, she begins to paddle faster and faster. She ends up seeing Daedalus and she rushes on shore to greet him, only for him to collapse into her arms, muttering Icarus’ name and telling her that he flew. She pulls him onto the raft, promising to find Icarus as she heads back toward Crete. Meanwhile, Icarus awakens in a hut on Thera, being nursed back to health by Cori. She’s singing softly as he awakens and Icarus tells her that her voice is really beautiful. Cori expresses surprise that Icarus is awake, she says when he washed up on shore she thought he was dying for sure. When Cori explains where Icarus is, Icarus gasps and realizes he’s on Thera. She wonders what he’s gasping about and he quickly comes up with a lie, saying that he’s just so stunned to be alive after falling into the sea. Icarus is able to walk and Cori takes him outside, explaining that they’re in the only town left on Thera after an invasion from Crete destroyed the village on the other side of the island and killed her parents. Icarus feels EXTREMELY guilty but keeps the truth from Cori, worrying how she’d take knowing that he’s from Crete and that his best friend led the invasion force to the island. Icarus explains that he lost his parents too and that he doesn’t have a home left to go back to either. Cori offers to let Icarus live with her until he’s fully recovered, saying that with him around she won’t feel as lonely. We see a scene of Ariadne taking Daedalus back to Crete and hiding him in a cave, he’s very sick from having very little food and water and even though she tries to nurse him back to health, it’s clear his ordeal took its toll. Back on Thera, Cori takes Icarus up the mountain to farm grapes and other fruit. The two of them are clearly bonding, and Cori is especially impressed by Icarus’ ideas about flight, telling him that she’d love for him to build wings for her someday. He tells her that he had his father’s help on the wings but he might be able to make them by himself. The two of them are still talking when the mountain begins to rumble. Some lava comes out and there is a dramatic scene as Cori and Icarus flee the small mini-eruption from the volcano. When they finally reach safety, Cori says that the volcano hasn’t erupted in many hundreds of years and that something like this is very troubling. While Cori warns the village chief, Icarus goes back to Cori’s house to rest. He suddenly sees Theseus signaling to him from a nearby cave. The two of them hug and Icarus is overjoyed to see Theseus again. Theseus tells Icarus that he suspects that Minos’ forces will be back to the island to wipe out the rest of the population, though he doesn’t know what it is that Minos wants with Thera. He tells Icarus that the two of them have to warn the village chieftain and then go back to Crete and try to convince Minos’ soldiers not to carry out the invasion. Icarus tells Theseus that he wants to help but that he doesn’t want to leave Cori behind. He realizes he has to tell Cori that he’s from Crete and that her people are still in danger. Theseus heads down to the shore while Icarus goes back to Cori’s house to talk with her. He starts to tell her the truth when Cori tells him that she already knew Icarus was from Crete and that she knows he didn’t come to hurt her. She says that she can’t hate the people of Crete for destroying her village or killing her parents because hate is what causes these kinds of things to happen in the first place. Icarus apologizes for deceiving her and Cori tells him that she’s glad he came, without him she wouldn’t have had anyone else in the world. The two of them embrace and Cori tells Icarus that she wants to go back to Crete with him. Icarus is worried for her but Cori insists that she’ll be safe.

Icarus, Cori, and Theseus set out to return to Crete, while we see a scene of Ariadne barely avoiding getting caught helping Daedalus and Laceus training up Minos’ troops. Any soldiers that object to the mission, Laceus has taken to the labyrinth to deal with the Minotaur. Laceus is clearly relishing the power Minos has given him and he picks only those soldiers willing to slaughter every man, woman, and child on Thera for the invasion force. There is a scene where Icarus, Cori, and Theseus return to the island where Icarus and Daedalus were exiled. Icarus notices that Daeadlus is gone and seems very worried about him. The three decide to spend the night on the island, Icarus and Cori sit out on the beach together and Icarus expresses doubt that they’ll be able to stop Minos. Cori is sad as well, thinking about her parents’ death. The two of them hold hands and sing a quiet, tender song, “I’m Not All Alone”. After the song, the two of them are about to kiss, though Icarus stops just before the kiss, still puzzled over where his father might be. Cori looks on, saddened as she watches Icarus walk away. There is another scene of Ariadne tending to Daedalus, who is clearly dying by this point despite all the help she’s been able to give him. She has a tear in her eye as she holds his hand, whispering that she promises to look out for Icarus and to find him and keep him safe. As she leaves the cave, a hand goes over her mouth and she is pulled back into some bushes. She elbows the person holding her and we hear Theseus crying out in pain, realizing it’s Theseus Ariadne turns around and embraces him, then kisses him before berating him for leaving for so long. Icarus and Cori are with Theseus, Icarus says he’s glad to see Ariadne again, though he wonders where his father is. Ariadne gives Icarus the bad news and Icarus rushes into the cave, seeing Daedalus on his deathbed. Daeadlus smiles at seeing Icarus again, though even the joy of knowing his son is safe can’t save him, and he dies as Icarus begs him not to. Icarus begins to sob as Cori and Ariadne both try to comfort him. He resolves that he will stop Minos and make his father’s sacrifice mean something. Ariadne returns to the palace, while Theseus, Cori, and Icarus stay in the cave, wondering what they’ll do to stop Minos. Back at the palace, Ariadne confronts her father, telling him that she will not allow him to commit genocide and she knows the real reason why he’s attacking Thera. Minos promises Ariadne that he can make her queen of all the world once he’s passed on and she’ll have riches far beyond what she can imagine. Ariadne starts to object, but realizing that she’ll never convince her father to give up his crusade, decides to play along, acting as if she’s seen the light and thanking him for going to such trouble to bring them such wealth. Minos kisses Ariadne’s forehead and thanks her for seeing it his way, returning to his chambers. Laceus asks Minos if he really believes his daughter’s act, Minos says he knows Ariadne is deceiving him. Laceus asks Minos if he’s unwilling to do what is necessary because it would involve killing his own daughter. Minos says that if it truly comes to that, that Laceus would be the one to do the deed. Laceus replies “just say the word, my king… it is a pity, really, I would’ve liked to marry her someday.” After Minos goes to bed, Laceus decides to follow Ariadne… and of course, she returns to the cave where Theseus, Icarus, and Cori are camped out. Laceus sees Theseus and Ariadne embrace and becomes enraged, though he does not move from his hiding spot. Ariadne tells Theseus that Minos plans to move out in the morning with the army and that it’s too late to talk any of them down, Laceus purged anyone who wasn’t devoted to the mission. Theseus realizes he has to get to Thera and help them raise an army before Minos’ men arrive. He decides to leave Icarus and Cori behind, he asks Ariadne to protect them but Ariadne insists on going with Theseus, not wanting to lose him again. The two of them rush to sneak back into the palace to gather weapons and Minos’ battle plans which might help the Therans repel the attack. Laceus sneaks up to attack them from behind, only for Ariadne to turn around and punch him right in the gut. She calls Laceus a coward and says that he’s the real traitor in all of this. Enraged, Laceus goes to strike Ariadne down with his sword, only for Theseus to parry the blow. The two of them have a brief sword fight but Theseus disarms him and gets him down on the ground. Ariadne implores Theseus to kill him, but Laceus pathetically begs for his life and Theseus decides to spare him. Laceus starts to get up, but Theseus knocks him out, telling Ariadne that he can’t have Laceus follow them. Theseus leaves Laceus tied to a tree as he and Ariadne sneak into Minos’ palace to gather weapons and battle plans. The two of them are then seen boarding a small boat with the stolen items. Theseus tells Ariadne to stay and look after Cori and Icarus, but Ariadne tells Theseus she won’t leave him again and insists on getting in the boat with him. Theseus sighs and agrees, looking back toward the cave and wishing Icarus and Cori luck as the two set off.

We then see a scene of Cori waking up and seeing Icarus still asleep. She kisses his cheek and goes out to gather food for their breakfast, wondering where Theseus is. In the entrance of the cave, she sees a note from him explaining where the two of them went. She sighs and then continues outside to gather food, planning on telling Icarus what happened when he wakes up. She wanders for a bit until she finds a nice spot where berries have grown. As she’s picking the berries, we see Laceus stir nearby. He has a knife concealed on him and uses it to cut his bonds… then begins stalking over toward Cori. Meanwhile, Icarus awakens and wonders where everyone is. He sees Theseus’ note and seems quite disappointed, but then starts looking for Cori. It’s then that we hear Laceus. “Oh, Icarus, are you looking for someone?” Laceus is holding Cori in front of him with a knife to her throat, the same ropes that once bound him are now wrapped around her and she has a gag tied over her mouth. He tells Icarus to tell him exactly what Theseus and Ariadne are planning or he’ll kill Cori. Cori is rapidly shaking her head and trying to tell Icarus not to tell Laceus anything, but Icarus is desperate and tells Laceus exactly what Theseus and Ariadne are doing, then begs him to spare Cori’s life. Laceus thanks Icarus mockingly, telling Icarus that he’s going to feed Cori to the Minotaur before summoning some guards over to have Icarus killed. Icarus tries to get to Cori as Laceus is dragging her away, but the guards are rushing toward him and he has to flee into the woods. There’s another quick chase scene of Icarus evading the guards before making it to a cliff overlooking the sea, we see him watching helplessly as Minos’ fleet sets out, having been unable to stop it. He looks back toward the palace and resolves to save Cori, rushing to Theseus’ house to gather his friend’s sword and armor. We next see Laceus tossing the still bound and gagged Cori into a cold stone cell, telling her that he’ll give Icarus’ corpse her regards. Cori quickly manages to wriggle free of the ropes, only to realize that she’s lying in a pile of the bones of all the other soldiers Laceus had thrown into the labyrinth. She’s about to stand when she hears the Minotaur’s terrible roar. The next scene is of Icarus in Theseus’ gear, he’s a bit small for it but he still looks quite the warrior as he descends into the labyrinth to find Cori. There are interspersed scenes of Icarus searching for her and Cori barely avoiding the Minotaur, eventually she is cornered with the beast and about to be devoured when suddenly the minotaur lets out a painful roar. Icarus has slashed its leg from behind with Theseus’ sword. The Minotaur immediately turns toward Icarus and floors him with a powerful blow. Cori grabs a big rock and throws it at the Minotaur’s head, causing it to turn its attention to her. The next scene consists of Icarus and Cori alternately avoiding the Minotaur and trying to escape, eventually the two of them work together and manage to slip out of the labyrinth, but they haven’t been careful and the minotaur’s followed them out. What ensues is a chase through Minos’ castle with the two of them eventually leading the beast to the roof. It charges Icarus, nearly killing him before Cori manages to trip it up, sending it hurtling off the roof of the castle and to the ground below. Having killed the Minotaur, Icarus and Cori rush to the shore only to see that Laceus has not only left the island, he scuttled every remaining boat so that Icarus and Cori couldn’t pursue him. The two of them return to the cave, wondering how they’ll possibly catch up with Minos’ troops now. We see Theseus and Ariadne arriving on Thera and trying to distribute the weapons, but the village chief wants to surrender to Minos and evacuate the island peacefully. Ariadne explains that if Minos gets control of Thera, he’ll have Hephaestus’ forge and will conquer the world. Theseus and Ariadne manage to convince the villagers to fight, but with only a day to train, it seems impossible that they’ll be able to repel Minos’ armies in time.

Back on Crete, Icarus is still despairing. Cori tries to get Icarus to rebuild his wings and that it might just get him to Thera in time, but Icarus is despondant, thinking he can’t do it without his father’s help. The two of them are back in Daeadlus’ house when Icarus discovers a set of plans that Daedalus drew up, revealing that Daedalus designed wings for his son many years ago, when Icarus first expressed a desire to fly. He’d just never believed his son was ready until the time they were stuck together on that island. With the help of his father’s instructions and Cori’s help as well, Icarus quickly constructs the wings, though they only have time to make one pair. The two of them head up to the cliff and Cori realizes she’ll have to stay. Icarus offers to carry Cori, though she worries that he’ll fall with her added weight. Icarus asks Cori to trust him. Cori replies that she does and the two of them leap off the cliff together, Cori clinging tightly to Icarus. Icarus spreads his wings and takes off with Cori hanging on tightly. She tightens her embrace and there’s another beautiful flight scene of Icarus and Cori flying rapidly to Thera. At one point, Cori leans up and quickly kisses Icarus on the lips. Meanwhile, we see Minos’ invasion force has landed on the near side of Thera and that the troops are planning to march around the volcano to attack the village on the other side of the island. After Laceus arrives, telling Minos exactly what Theseus and Ariadne have planned, Minos gives Laceus permission to kill both of them and to lead the troops to the village on the other side of the island to wipe it out. Minos then goes with a few of his trusted men and priests up the side of Thera to appeal to Hephaestus for control of his forge. Icarus and Cori fly over the volcano, narrowly avoiding another spew of magma and smoke from its crater. The ash coats Icarus’ wings and nearly makes him fall, though Cori helps brush off the ash and the two make it safely to the far side of the island. Theseus is a bit worried to see Icarus and Cori there, knowing that the two of them are in great danger, but Icarus insists that he can help stop Minos and that he has some of his father’s blueprints with him, which they can use to sabotage some of Minos’ war machines. Cori is greatly worried at Thera’s intensifying rumblings and worries that the volcano will erupt soon with terrible fury. She asks Icarus to come with her to a spot on the mountain where she once heard a voice, she thinks Hephaestus might have been trying to warn her of something. Icarus tells Theseus to evacuate everyone who isn’t needed in the battle while he and Cori go to find the spot she mentioned.

We then see Minos making his way up the volcano as it continues to rumble and erupt. One of his priests is crushed by a fiery rock thrown from the summit, but Minos insists that the men continue. Meanwhile, Laceus has led his army to within sight of the village. Theseus’ troops gather with the battle plans and Daedalus’ blueprints in hand. As the battle begins, Ariadne expresses worry about Minos, and that while he might be doing evil things, he’s still her father and she loves him. Icarus and Cori find the spot Cori mentioned and Cori kneels down upon it, concentrating intensely. Though nothing happens at first, there is another great rumble. Icarus tries to pull Cori away but she insists on staying. She finally hears a great voice calling to her. It is Hephaestus (voice of Keith David), enraged at the interlopers on his mountain. He tells Cori that he will never grant use of his forge to a warmonger and that he has chosen to turn all his power upon the conquerors. Cori begs him to cease his fury, promising the invaders will be defeated, but Hephaestus insists that “it cannot be stopped”. Icarus and Cori both realize that the mountain will erupt. They rush back to the village to warn everyone to leave the island. Meanwhile, there is a scene of fighting as Theseus and the gathered soldiers are able to get the upper hand on the invading troops. As soon as he realizes Theseus is going to win the battle, Laceus leaves his men to pursue Ariadne up the mountain. Theseus and the townspeople are celebrating the defeat of the invaders, none of whom have been killed. Icarus and Cori return and tell everyone that the volcano will erupt and destroy the entire island and that everyone needs to flee immediately. Icarus tells the defeated Cretan soldiers that Minos has endangered them all and that this war was a selfish grab for power, not a defense of their home as he promised. Many of the soldiers begin to express regret for their actions, but the village chief tells them that there will be time for apologies later, they must all leave the island immediately. Theseus realizes that Ariadne is still in danger, and he, Icarus, and Cori rush to find her and get her off the volcano before it erupts. Meanwhile, we see Minos in a volcanic cave, proudly proclaiming his victory and demanding that Hephaestus grant him his mighty force. Hephaestus proclaims Minos to be a fool before using bursts of lava to vaporize his priests and guards, leaving only Minos left alive. It’s then that Ariadne rushes in, begging Hephaestus to spare her father’s life and take her instead. Hephaestus replies that “your sacrifice is acceptable”, and the ground begins to glow beneath Ariadne’s feet as the volcano is about to vaporize her with a jet of lava. We see terror in Minos’ eyes and he realizes at last that his lust for power has claimed everything dear to him, and is about to take the only thing he has left. He lunges for Ariadne, pushing her clear of the impending fiery doom and getting vaporized himself as Ariadne screams in horror. She falls to her knees, tears streaking down her face. The ground rumbles beneath her, and she knows that crying over her father will not bring him back. She gets up and flees the cave, only to run right into the tip of Laceus’ sword. It pierces her, but does not hit anything vital, leaving her seriously, but not mortally wounded. Laceus smiles, saying that he might have lost his chance to have power but he won’t let Theseus have the last laugh. Gasping in shock but then gritting her teeth in rage, Ariadne kicks Laceus hard enough in the gut to loosen his grip on his sword, then pulls it out of her own body and swings it furiously at him. She barely gets half a swing before falling to one knee and dropping the sword, already weak from her injuries. Laceus laughs and picks up the sword, raising it above Ariadne’s neck to slice a fatal blow. As his sword comes down, it’s parried by Theseus’ blade, wielded by Icarus. Icarus looks defiantly at Laceus, telling him that he won’t hurt anyone anymore. The two get into a brief swordfight as Theseus and Cori run to Ariadne’s side, Theseus quickly makes a dressing to wrap Ariadne’s wound after Cori treats it with a healing salve made from some plants grown in the volcano’s soil. Theseus is about to come after Laceus but a lava flow separates them and Icarus yells at them to leave the island as the eruptions get more and more intense. Cori doesn’t want to leave Icarus but Theseus knows there’s no way to help him and pulls Cori and Ariadne down the side of the mountain.

The battle between Laceus and Icarus is quick but intense, Laceus has the upper hand for most of it but Icarus uses his quickness and smarts to trick Laceus into a bad position. When Laceus is about to fall into a lava flow, Icarus grabs him by the wrist… only for Laceus to smile and lunge forward with his sword pointed at Icarus’ throat. Icarus barely dodges and Laceus falls face first off the side of the mountain into a flowing river of lava (we don’t see Laceus hit the lava obviously, but it’s clear he’s dead). Icarus is now trapped and he’s forced to flee up the side of the mountain. We see he still has his wings strapped to his back, but with the shaking intensifying, he barely has the footing needed to stand, let alone run and soar into the sky. After a quick scene of Theseus, Cori and Ariadne on a boat fleeing the island, and everyone else on Thera in their own boats doing the same, Icarus continues up the mountain, finally finding a suitable place to leap off. He barely manages to avoid the flow of the lava, leaping from the side of the mountain and getting airborne. He soars over the boat where Cori and the others are, about to land when he hears a massive boom from the direction of Thera. A huge eruption has sent out a massive wall of water into the sea. Though the boats barely ride out the wave, Cori yells up to Icarus that Hephaestus said the real eruption will be much bigger, large enough to blow the whole island apart. Icarus realizes that if that were to happen, the wave created from the eruption would continue through the sea and slam into Crete, killing everyone on the shore there as well. Icarus decides to fly to Crete and warn everyone to get to the center of the island where the waves can’t hit. There is another eruption and the entire top half of the volcano explodes, burying Thera under the sea and sending out another massive wave that nearly causes the boats to go under. Everyone in the boats is safe, but Cori, Theseus, and Ariadne can only wonder about what will become of Crete as the huge wave continues on toward the island. Icarus returns to Crete, going into town and warning everyone to get to the center of the island before the wave comes in. The villagers all start to flee to safety just as the wave comes in, wrecking most of the city but leaving everyone safe atop Minos’ castle, the only safe spot in the entire city. Icarus collapses in exhaustion just as the wave begins to recede. He wakes up in the palace to see Cori leaning over him, just like when he woke up in the hut before. The two of them embrace and Cori walks Icarus to the window, where they can see Ariadne (recovering from her wound), making a speech where she explains that though her father’s actions risked the lives of everyone on Crete, she hopes the people of Crete can trust her to lead them while they all work to rebuild. Theseus is at her side. The two of them step outside and are cheered by everyone, the Therans and Cretans alike. Ariadne proclaims Icarus a hero and that like him, the people of Crete and Thera will soar into a new future together in peace and harmony.

The final scene starts with Cori and Icarus together at Daedalus’ grave, laying flowers for him. Ariadne, now queen of Crete, walks over to Icarus and expresses her deepest regrets, knowing it was her father who caused his father to be killed. Icarus says there’s no need for Ariadne to be sorry and that she did her best to save him. Ariadne sees Cori and smiles, asking Icarus if he’s still okay with the two of them still being just friends. Icarus nods and says that she’d better take good care of Theseus, to which she giggles and smiles, kissing Icarus on the cheek. Theseus walks over to Icarus and the two smile and hug, with Theseus telling Icarus that he should train so the two can have real sparring matches soon. There’s then a scene of Icarus going back up to the cliff with Cori, both of them have wings this time. Cori tells Icarus that she’s nervous and he says that there’s no way she could be as nervous as he was the first time he flew. The two of them kiss deeply, then join hands and leap off the cliff together before soaring into the skies, their wings glistening in the sun.

In an alternate reality there exist demons, vampires and many other creatures we just know from myths and legends. Ray and Jeff Carp are monster hunters and assassins who kill everybody and everything for money. In a club in New York they get their jobs from a fat demon named Miro. Somewhat of a civil war between the demons and vampires just started for the control of the city. Miro calls the brothers and they come to the club. Many beautiful women dance for the demon who welcomes Ray and Jeff. He gives them a paper with a picture of a faction leader of the vampires in Manhatten. The name is of the vampire is Valdo who´s very powerful. They accept the job and leave Miro who still enjoys the girls.

Ray and Jeff start with their work. With some henchmen they do some researches about Valdo who seems to somewhat of a mafia boss in the underworld of New York. In the past weeks more and more vampires have come to New York. Valdo is assembling an army to wipe out the demons in New York. He has a predilection for good cigars and excellent whiskey. This predilections Ray and Jeff will use to get into the inner circles of the mafia and to meet Valdo. They give a full account to Miro who wants them to include a woman named Ariadne to their plans. Ray and Jeff are not very happy but they have to accept that. They cover as salesman for cigars and whiskey and get to a party of the vampires. The party is surreal for them because it´s just about drinking blood and alcohol and having sex. It´s somewhat of an orgy. When they enter the room where Valdo is sitting with his intimates the problems start. The vampires stare at Ariadne and attack her. Ray and Jeff shoot some of the vampires with their very special looking guns while Ariadne eliminates two vampires only with her hands. Valdo stands up and also attacks Ariadne. He´s superior to her and almost kills her when he bites the demon. Ariadne disappears in a black smoke leaving behind Ray and Jeff who try to kill Valdo but fail. Valdo takes them to the cellar of the house which seems to be a torture chamber.

The vampires enchain the brothers while the brothers start a dispute blaming each other incompetence. Then there´s just silence in the chamber after the vampires are finally gone. Ray frees himself and Jeff. Then they sneak off to the penthouse of the building where Valdo rests. There they witness an unbelievable deal between two powerful leaders. Valdo and Miro are in the room negotiating about the division of New York after “everything is done”. They plan to escalate the war between the demons and the vampires to become their new leaders. Not just the bosses of bigger or smaller parts of the races but their fully empowered leaders. To set the seal on the deal they kill Ariadne who was enchained on the bed and the wife of Valdo. Ray and Jeff rush into the room and shoot both Valdo and Miro. Suddenly dozen of vampires and demons are also in the room hungry for some fresh human meat. Ray and Jeff flee through the window and somehow survive the fall. Now they are the hunted in this world. Now they have to flee from the hunters of the underworld.

Plot: Scattered across the Great Southern Pelagic Ocean are chains of tiny islands. On one island, a boy named Mau has almost completed his ritual ordeal to become a man. Now he must launch the canoe he has built into the ocean and sail back to his home island, where he will receive his adult tattoos and be given a man-soul to replace the child-soul he has left behind. His entire village awaits him on the beach for his arrival.

Aboard the schooner Sweet Judy, presently voyaging through the Southern Pelagic Ocean, bound for Port Mercia, Ermintrude ("Daphne") Fanshaw sails to join her father, the Governor of the Pelagic Territories, presently stationed at Port Mercia.

In England, the dreaded Russian Influenza has killed all other heirs to the throne. The Gentlemen of Last Resort, a secret organisation serving the Crown, set out for Port Mercia to bring back Daphne's father within the nine months required by the ratified version of the Magna Carta, accompanied by the heir's mother. Thanks to the epidemic, he is now king, and Ermintrude is now heir to the throne of the British Empire. Neither she nor anyone else within ten thousand miles knows this.

Far to the south, a volcano erupts, blowing itself to bits and setting off an enormous tsunami. When the wave has passed, only Mau and Ermintrude remain alive, marooned together among the wreckage and corpses on the island called the Nation. Having left his boy soul behind but with no one remaining to give him his adult tattoos, Mau considers himself to be without a soul. Without his soul, Mau describes himself as a vulnerable blue hermit crab that has left one shell to seek another. This is a major theme throughout the book, since Mau is a man without a country. Just as a soulless person hungers for a soul, Mau is driven to rebuild his country.

Upon arrival at the island, Mau discovers that his entire village and family has been wiped out by the tsunami. Numb with horror Mau begins burying the dead, sending them into the sea wrapped in a substance called papervine, a type of tough local vegetation. Island tradition says that the dead, buried at sea will become dolphins. Distraught at what he is doing, he attempts to disassociate himself from his task, working on a kind of mental auto-pilot. Finally, after sending the last corpse into the sea he considers his life as a soulless person, neither boy nor man, and considers suicide. He is only prevented from doing so by Ermintrude, who tries to talk to him. In his dream state, Mau believes her to be a ghost, as she is pale-skinned and dressed in white.

Ermintrude is a resourceful girl with an active interest in science. Her ocean voyage was intended to be a way to get away from her overbearing grandmother and create a new life with her kindly, widowed father. Instead, she finds herself surviving mutiny, storm, and shipwreck. She is afraid of Mau, but after watching him bury his dead, she leaves Mau a mango on a plate. When they meet again, she tries to shoot him with a pistol. Fortunately, the gunpowder in the pistol is wet, and the gun fails to fire.

Mau mistakenly believes that by waving a gun around, Ermintrude is giving him a spark-maker to make fire. With determination and good faith, the two begin to help each other and establish some basic communication. Ermintrude introduces herself as "Daphne" and never uses her given name, which she has always hated.

Soon, drawn by the smoke of Mau's fire, other survivors from neighbouring islands arrive at the Nation, including an old priest called Ataba, and a nameless woman and her infant. The woman cannot breastfeed, and the baby will die unless someone can find milk. With desperation and resourcefulness, Mau finds a way to get milk from a wild pig at great danger to himself. Due to Mau's lack of a soul and his rejection of the gods (since they failed to save his family from the tsunami), Ataba believes that Mau is possessed by a demon, referring to him as "Demon Boy" for most of the rest of his life. A few days later, more survivors arrive, including strong Milo and silver-tongued Pilu, two brothers who are able to communicate with Daphne in English. This speeds the translation of language along considerably. Milos' wife is heavily pregnant and 13-year-old Daphne is drafted as a midwife. She brings the child into the world, singing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" throughout the birth, a choice that makes Milo revere Daphne throughout the rest of the book.

Confronted with the problem of the missing "god anchors" (white, non-indigenous stones that are said to "anchor" the gods and stop them drifting away), Mau locates and then tries to salvage them from the lagoon, where they have been left by the raging tsunami. He locates and restores two of the original three god anchors but, whilst underwater, searching for the third, he discovers several more of the white stones, one of them with a carving on it. The priest, Ataba, tries to destroy one of the god stones, which he claims to be false. His rage causes him to thrash about in the lagoon and he attracts the attention of a shark. Mau is nearly killed rescuing him from the shark and, having suffered hypothermia and chronic sleep deprivation (he has obsessively spent his nights guarding the beach) Mau falls into a coma. Accepting a magic poison from the women of the island, Daphne travels to the land of Locaha, the Nation's god of death, and rescues him. Still more survivors arrive, bringing news of cannibal raiders from another island who are hunting survivors.

Daphne is at one point told by the Grandmothers (the not-at-all remembered counterpart to the ancestral Grandfathers) to open the cave of the Grandfathers. Convincing Mau that this is what they should do, Daphne, Ataba, and Mau enter the Grandfathers' cave, an ancient burial chamber. There, they discover that the Nation is far older than any other civilisation on Earth, and has made huge discoveries (up to and including maps of the stars, telescopes and glasses) which have later been forgotten. Their knowledge of the stars is shown in the ancient legends of the Nation, which can also be seen as metaphors for the movements of the planets. It is from this ancient cave that the white stone that formed the god anchors came. The ancient discoveries remained part of the history of the Nation, but only as stories told to children.

When Mau, Daphne and Ataba leave the cave they are met by two English men who mutinied on the Sweet Judy and who were set adrift by the captain of that ship. When the old priest Ataba threatens them with a spear, the mutineers shoot and kill him. They take Daphne hostage as she tells the islanders to melt into the forest. She learns from them that the leader of the mutiny, a man named Cox, has joined the tribe of cannibal raiders, who worship the death god Locaha. Soon after this Daphne offers the two men a local type of moonshine beer. However, one of the mutineers refuses to spit into the beer, which neutralises the poisons in the beer and his first drink kills him. This causes the other to be scared off. He later escapes the island and meets up with Cox and the cannibal raiders.

Certain that the raiders will arrive soon, Mau arranges for the cannons on board the Sweet Judy to be set up overlooking the bay for the defense of the Nation. A test firing goes well. However, they only have enough gunpowder for one more shot.

The Raiders arrive, with Cox as their new chieftain. Daphne immediately notices that the Raiders hate Cox, but according to their laws they must accept him as chieftain because he killed the previous chieftain. Instead of allowing Cox and the Raiders to attack the entire village, Mau has the only intact cannon, which was reinforced with papervine, fired, frightening the Raiders. The Raiders and the Nation then agree to have the chiefs fight in single combat, as is the tradition. Everyone is surprised when strong Milo announces that Mau is the actual chief of the Nation. Cox is annoyed because a small boy is a more difficult target than a large man, but he is sure that his two pistols can take care of Mau. Mau remembers Daphne's first wet attempt to shoot him, however, and he knows that gunpowder fails when wet. Mau takes the battle into the lagoon, where Mau's skill as a swimmer and his knowledge of the territory help him win the duel. Enraged with the wrath of Locaha, Mau drives away the Raiders, forcing them to release their prisoners.

A few days after this battle, Daphne's father arrives. He, like Daphne, is fascinated with the discovery made in the Grandfathers' cave. The Gentlemen of Last Resort arrive two weeks later, informing Daphne's father of his new status as King and presenting him with the crown. Mau, who has learned about world politics from Daphne and Pilu, does not want to become part of the Empire but requests that his Nation become a member of the scientific Royal Society. In the end, Daphne leaves with her father. Though it is never explicitly stated in the book, it is clear that she and Mau would rather stay on the island and be together, but their combined sense of duty leads her to return to England and Mau to remain behind.

Years later, in an alternate present day, an old scientist tells this story to two children of the present-day Nation. He explains that Daphne returned to England to marry a prince from Holland and that Mau died of old age. When Daphne died, her body was sent to the Nation to be buried at sea so that her soul would become a dolphin. He tells them that from those days onward, thousands of scientists have visited the island, including Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Carl Sagan, and Richard Feynman, and that dozens of observatories have been created to learn about the stars, as the Nation has done for thousands of years. The film ends with the elder of the two children (the girl - by six minutes) standing guard on the beach, protecting the Nation as Mau had done years before. In the lagoon, a dolphin leaps from the sea and the scientist smiles.

Kate Winslet...Samantha

Plot:

The film opens in Tennessee, 1828. It opens on a farm, where a man is with his loving family. The man's name is George (Kyle Chandler). He is with his wife, Samantha (Kate Winslet) and his two daughters: Mary (about 10 years old) and Beth (about 7 years old). He plays with his two daughters, running around trying to catch them. All of a sudden Mary is struck by an arrow, coming seemingly from nowhere. She's hit right in the heart and she drops dead. George looks around, looking around for the threat. Nothing happens for the next several minutes before Beth is also shot in the heart, she's also dead. He runs to the house, to get his gun, yelling to Samantha to go the town and get help. Samantha starts running before an arrow also drops her dead. George enters his house and finds his gun, only to discover he's all alone. He looks for the threat, but he doesn't see any. After several minutes, he runs to his closest daughter (Beth) and starts to weep. He is also angry.

A couple years later, George is alone in his farm. He isn't happy, he's merely there living as a ghost. Someone knocks on his door, and he answers it. It's Sherif Gables (Daniel Craig), who tells him that Congress is considering passing the Indian Removal Act. George looks at the Sherif, not sure what that means. The Sherif tells him that the Act would move the Indians all the way to Indian Territory, far away from any white settlement. “So that what happened to your family doesn't happen again.” George looks serious, as he considers this, and then asks the Sherif why he's telling him this. The Sherif states that Congress has requested a hearing from someone who has actually suffered an Indian attack, and the local Representative picked George. Sherif asks him to go testify, and George decides to do so.

At the Congress hearing, George recounts what happened in the opening scene, leaving no detail out. He has trouble telling it, as he is obviously still emotionally hurt by it. After the hearing, George is seen on a train back near the town he lives in, looking sad. Once he arrives, he goes to the Sherif and tells him the Act has passed. The Sherif looks very pleased, and states “Our community will now be safe and clean.”

The Sherif, with George's help, starts to gather the community to start enacting the law. A young lawyer, named Adolf (Ryan Phillippe), stops them telling them that the Act is unconstitutional. This starts an argument between the Sherif and Adolf. The Sherif tries to argue that Indians only bring death and desperation with them, while Adolf argues that the Indians have every right to be there-isn't that the whole point of America, rights? The community seems to be taking the Sherif's side, but they agree to at least wait until after the Courts decide. The Sherif isn't very happy with this news, but he doesn't say anything. George also doesn't look very happy.

When they are alone, the Sherif and George start talking. Sherif convinces George to have a “talk” with Adolf so they can enforce the law. George is then seen going to Adolf's place, to convince him to withdraw his concerns. Once at Adolf's place, he knocks on the door. Adolf answers the door. George asks him why he is objecting.

“Because they have every right to be here.” Adolf said.

“They kill our people. They killed my family.” George said.

“You blame them for what happened, I get it. But just because some reds went on a rampage, that means they all have to move?”

“If one person does it, then they all do it to all of us.”

“I don't believe that. I may be German, so maybe I don't get this attitude, but taking revenge on an entire people...is simply barbaric. I moved here because of a promise of a new world, but this is just different shit.”

“They killed my family. You honestly expect me to just let that go?”

“Have you gone to them, asked for the ones responsible to be brought to justice?”

George doesn't answer. Instead he takes a revolver and shoots. He misses Adolf, on purpose. He warns him that if he doesn't step down, next time his aim won't be so bad. Adolf stares at him, and George leaves, angry.

Within a few weeks, the local court states that the Act is unconstitutional since it would violate the treaties the Indians had with the Americans. George isn't very happy, even less happy since his testimony didn't make the courts realize how important the Act was. Over the next several years, court after court failed to site with the Americans. In the end, it reaches the Supreme Court. George waits in his farm, waiting for an answer. Eventually the answer does come: the Supreme Court has agreed with the local and district courts: the Act is unconstitutional.

George goes to Sherif. “What do we do now?” George asked the Sherif. The Sherif answers that he wishes he could just ignore the Courts, but it would violate his professional duty. The two merely stand there, when all of a sudden a messenger tells them the President is coming with the army. He plans to force the relocation of the Indians, courts be damned. The Sherif and George seem a bit happy, although surprised.

The President arrives at the town, and he gets the community to start rallying behind him. Once again, Adolf tries to stand up against the community. The President points his gun at Adolf and tells him to either shut up, or be considered a traitor to the United States. Adolf thinks about it for a second before turning around. The President then takes the community and they go to the Indian camp. They start to force the relocation of Indians, facing surprisingly little resistance.

The forced march is tough on the Indians, and some of them die. After several miles, the town's community including George and the Sherif go back to the town. They seem happy, having succeeded in their goal. George, though, wonders if they did the right thing. The Sherif tells him that of course they did the right thing. This doesn't seem to completely convince George.

On his way back to his farm, George is intercepted by Adolf. Adolf has a bow, telling him that he found the bow at the Sherif's house. George realizes that the Indians never attacked his family-this whole time it was the Sherif, which explained why he was still alive. He realizes that this whole time he had been played. George asks Adolf for forgiveness and Adolf states “It's not me who you owe forgiveness. But you can make things right.” George nods and heads to the Sherif's house.

He enters the house, and the Sherif is there. George reveals that he knows the Sherif was behind the attack that killed his family. George points his revolver at the Sherif, and the Sherif points a nearby rifle at George. They stare at each other, and the Sherif reveals he needed someone in the community to get rid of the Indians. He hated the Indians because they weren't white, and he couldn't stand seeing them near the community. George shoots the Sherif in the stomach, but the Sherif isn't killed but merely grazed. The Sherif shoots George in the head.

Adolf then enters the House, and shoots the Sherif in the heart. The Sherif dies as Adolf looks on before taking a horse and going west.

Jimmy Helward move with his family to a little backwater town in Texas. He is still sad that he had to leave his old home and his friends behind. Being sixteen is hard. But he finds new friends at his new school very fast too. Max and Alex are two brothers trying to get through high school. They show Jimmy the school and point out the various cliques to him. Jimmy falls in love with a girl, Maria, who hangs out with some brawny guys. After the first two weeks at his new school, Jimmy has settled in nicely. At dinner he tells his family very enthusiastically about his new history teacher, Heath Miller. He imparts the subject matter with such energy that even the most boring topic gets interesting. He inspires his pupils.

At the next day, Jimmy, Max and Alex walk through the hallway to their next lesson. Jimmy sees Maria again, but does not dare to talk with her. Max pushes Jimmy, so he collides with Maria. He apologizes himself and helps her to collect her books. Maria looks at Jimmy and asks him if he is new at their school, furthermore she invites him to a party that weekend. Max and Alex can come too. She smiles at Jimmy once again and walks away. The three friends run to their next class – history. Heath Miller is very popular, because he is very charismatic. He knows what to tell his students so they are enthusiastic about something. He is also very good-looking, which furthers his popularity with the girls. After the lesson, Jimmy, Max and Alex have lunch period and go to the cafeteria to eat something. On their way there, they see how the Afro-American janitor Leon gets mobbed by some students. The three are ashamed about their colleges, but they do nothing about it.

The weekend nears and Jimmy is looking forward to the party at Maria´s. He picks up Max and Alex with his car and together they drive to Maria´s house. There, dozens of students from their school are making merry. Even Heath Miller, who Maria has invited too, is there. At the party, Jimmy and Maria get to know each other better and they sleep together. Later they rejoin the party. Meanwhile, Max and Alex are the odd ones out and are very bored. Jimmy ignores them, he is very busy with Maria, who cannot keep her hands off him. Together they walk into the kitchen, where Heath Miller talks to some of the teenagers. He preaches about unfairness in the US of A and that foreigners are shown more respect than their own countrymen. First Jimmy wants to take his teacher to task, but his speech sweeps him away too. There are some colored students at the party as well, so there are some quarrels until Miller calms everybody down. The party is over and the teenagers drive home.

The next school day, Maria picks Jimmy up from home. His parents are happy for him that he has found a girlfriend so fast. But instead of driving to school, Maria takes Jimmy to a isolated house, where some other students await them. First, Jimmy does not understand and wants to go to school, but then Heath Miller arrives and he calms down. Miller wants the teenagers to form a line. Then he starts another speech about injustice and agitates the teenagers. Jimmy is thrilled again and Maria is very happy about it. Miller talks on and demands solidarity from the “pure” students and wants the boys to cut their hair uniformly. Either a buzz cut or a full shave. Anybody, who does not want to do that, has to go. But nobody goes. At the end, Miller cuts his hair himself and we see a glimpse of a tattoo on his back. After his speech, Miller walks into a separate room to change his clothes for school and exposes his tattoo fully: a big swastika. They drive to school all together.

In the next days, all of Miller´s group are looked at funnily. But when they decry the injustice in their country, more and more teenagers join their group. Two weeks later, about two thirds of the students of the school have joined the “American Idols”, that is the new name of the group. Miiller holds his speeches and rouses the students. After each speech, the event degenerates into a wild orgy with alcohol and sex.

Meanwhile, Jimmy´s parents are very worried about their son and contact the principal. But the principal cannot do anything against the group, because he cannot prove that anything illegal is happening. Finally, Jimmy´s parents meet with Max and Alex and ask them to join the movement, so they can tell them what is going on. Max and Alex are very reluctant, because they are afraid of such groups. But in the end they ask Jimmy, if they can attend a meeting. Jimmy is very happy and invites his former best friends to the next gathering. There they have to cut their hair as well.

After a few weeks, Max and Alex want to report to the principal. But in front of his office, they are stopped by some students – amongst others Jimmy – and are dragged along. Jimmy questions both and asks them if they have no honor. Max asks Jimmy if he has lost it and if he understands what is happening. Suddenly, Maria kicks Max in his guts. Then Max and Alex are beaten brutally and have to be taken to into intensive care at the hospital. Meanwhile the movement grows and grows and nearly all students have joined. All that do not join are terrorized. The janitor, Leon, tries to calm the teenagers down as well as he can, but without success. Eventually is he beaten by some members of the “American Idols” as well. When Jimmy finds the injured Leon, he takes pity on him and carries him into an empty classroom, where he deals with his injuries. The Nigerian asks him why Jimmy is helping him, but Jimmy does not know what to answer. When Maria calls for him, Jimmy runs from the classroom. Leon shouts “Thanks” after him.

In the next weeks, the happenings at Jimmy´s school are investigated, after Max and Alex have succumbed to their severe injuries. But there is still no evidence against Heath Miller and his pupils keep mum. The will of the group is too strong. Meanwhile, Jimmy and Leon become friends and Jimmy listens to Leon´s stories from his home country. Leon has barely escaped the ethnic cleansing by the local regime, but he has never seen his family again. Jimmy feels bad and starts to turn away from the “American Idols”. Heath Miller pulls Jimmy aside and asks him what is up with him. Immediately Jimmy feels the old enthusiasm again, but he tells his teacher that he needs time for himself. Miller grins and says that that is no problem. Jimmy just needs to come to the group´s gatherings again, once he feels better. But instead of going to the movements gatherings, Jimmy helps Leon with his duties at school – in secret, of course. But one day, he caught by Maria and other members of “American Idols” and gets questioned. They want him to prove his loyalty and tell him to beat Leon. Jimmy refuses and protects Leon from two other teenagers, who want to beat him up. Maria is deeply disappointed and walks away with the others. She threatens Jimmy to be very careful when he leaves his house. Leon thanks Jimmy, who panics and does not know what to do.

After a few days, he remorsefully goes to a gathering and asks to be taken to Heath Miller. But the two teenagers guarding the door do not let him pass. Then Miller himself arrives and asks Jimmy to join him in a separate room. Again he asks Jimmy what is up with him and if he even still believes in their “cause”. Jimmy swears that he still wants to belong to the group. Miller tells him to join the gathering and to party a bit, but to return to him later. At the party, Jimmy meets Maria and apologizes to her. But she cannot forgive him and asks him for time, she says she still loves him. Later in the evening, Jimmy returns to Miller and wants to speak with him. But what he finds is Miller and Maria having sex together. Jimmy crashes into the room and takes Miller to task. Miller just grins and says that everything is for the good of their “cause”. Jimmy attacks Miller, who can overwhelm him easily. Miller presents himself as a new leader and calms Jimmy down, he just wanted to comfort Maria. But then he demands the ultimate prove of Jimmy´s loyalty and tells him to kill Leon, whom the group has kidnapped and chained up in another room. Jimmy, Maria and Miller go to that room together and Miller gives Jimmy a gun. He takes Jimmy´s hand, points the gun against Leon´s head and tells Jimmy to shoot. Jimmy hesitates. Leon tells him to do it, to obey Miller, because otherwise Jimmy would probably have to die himself. Finally, Jimmy lowers the gun with tears in his eyes and points it at Miller instead. But Miller just pulls out another gun and shoots Jimmy and kills Leon with a headshot. The other teenagers in the house hear the shoots and panic. In the meantime, a special commando of the police has arrived and storms into the room where Jimmy, Miller and Maria are. Miller is standing above Jimmy and pointing the gun into his face. The special commandos shoot Miller and help Jimmy up. But suddenly Maria attacks them, because she has lost her “leader” and sees no more sense in living. She is shot too.

At the hospital, Jimmy promises to help the police to completely clarify matters and can finally return home. There his parents are waiting for him and embrace him. They finally have their son back.

Name: Alien-Nation

Director: Duncan Jones

Genre: Science Fiction

Date: May 20

Cast:

Jeremy Renner...Mark

Christine Woods...Lisa

Zac Effron...Sam

Plot:

Mark is in an apartment in Manhattan. He is with his girlfriend, Lisa. Lisa is the kind of girl that is independent, and is the one with the job. She's working as a research scientist for a company, Alien Tech, that deals with NASA, and the company has a special lab in Manhattan. It's a lab that's meant to show Senators and Congressman the important work the company is doing, rather than actual research. Lisa is in charge of ensuring that the experiments shown in the special lab work right. Mark is a struggling Broadway actor, who feels guilty that he depends on his girlfriend to pay the bills. It's not that he wants to be paying the bills-he just wishes both of them could contribute.

She gets a call from Alien Tech and finds out that they plan to transfer her to New Mexico to actually do some research work. This gets her excited, but Mark doesn't exactly want to move his life. In the end, he decides that he loves her so much that he'll follow her to New Mexico. While in Manhattan he manages to get a job as the theater teacher in a local high school, giving him an actual job. This seems to satisfy him, but he's a bit sad that he has to leave his dreams behind. At the airport, he sees some kids playing with their dad. He makes a comment that he would one day like to be that father figure. Lisa states that when their ready, they will have kids. This makes Mark happy.

They arrive at the small town in New Mexico, and their amazed at how nice of a house they have. It's not a mansion: it looks like the American dream home without the white picket fence. It does have a large yard with a swimming pool. That night the movie references that they make love in the bedroom, clearly happy with the status of their life. After a couple of days of settling in and enjoying their home (including swimming in the pool), they have to begin work. Mark says goodbye to Lisa as she goes to work on some new kind of rocket.

Mark goes to the high school he works at and discovers the classroom he's supposed to teach. He meets his first class, a class filled with normal high school students. They like to act, but all but one are not treated as stereotypes. The class seems to go without a hitch. At the end of the class a student goes up to him. It's the one that tends to be a bit weird and his name is Sam. Sam asks Mark if he's noticed anything wrong with the house they moved in. Mark states that the house is perfect. Sam thinks this is weird. Mark asks Sam why. Sam replies that the house tends to act weird since the house was rumored to be built on top of some weird alien tech. Mark laughs that off, stating that there is no such things as aliens. Sam looks a bit hurt, personally, but leaves Mark alone.

Mark goes to a teacher's party and is seen to be very social. Everyone seems to like him, and they all seem to get along perfectly. He charms a lot of the other teachers and it becomes pretty evident that they start to look up to him. After the party, he goes to a diner and orders food with a couple of teachers he clicked with. The dinner they have is another fun affair, and Mark seems to genuinely like these people. He mentions in the conversation that his favorite movie is the movie Die Hard and he doesn't really like science fiction-he considers it wish fulfillment for nerds.

That night, Mark is home alone since Lisa has to work late. He's watching television when all of a sudden it starts to have bursts of static. One minute the picture will be fine, the next minute static, and a few minutes later the picture will be fine again. This goes on a loop. Mark wonders what's wrong with the TV, since's it's new and they don't use satellite but cable. Mark decides that it must be the cable company. He goes to the phone and calls the cable company. When the cable company supposedly picks up, he instead hears a series of clicks. Mark is slightly freaking out but decides that this might be a prank pulled by his students. He decides to go instead read a book.

When Lisa gets home, the house seems to function perfectly fine. The next day at school, Mark confronts Sam about what happened. Sam replies that's what's to be expected. The alien tech, Sam theorizes, communicates with the alien mothership on rare occasions which caused the weird clicking noises on the phone and static. Sam convinces Mark to have Sam come over and try to prove his little theory.

After school, Sam is at Mark's house. He's using some kind of counter (the kind you see on ghost hunting shows), stating that the ghost hunters have it all wrong. The counter only goes off near alien technology since it gives off the necessary waves. For the most part, the counter doesn't go off except at a closet. Sam starts to look around the closet, but discovers nothing. After Sam is kicked out by Mark, who has lost his patience for something he considers stupid, Mark goes to the closet and laughs at the idea of alien technology being in there. Suddenly he notices something weird on the floor.

He realizes that it's a hidden door to a secret basement. He goes down the basement and turns on the light. To his shock, there is nothing in the basement but one weird thing. This weird thing is definably alien in nature. Mark is surprised and considers calling Sam back. He decides against it, and instead he starts to determine what it is. He does this for several hours before Lisa arrives. Mark calls her down to the basement, and Lisa is shocked at the basement's existence. She's even more intrigued by the discovery of the alien technology.

She decides that the next day she'll bring some materials from the secret lab. Mark asks her if the company will allow her to do so. Lisa states she'll be taking the technology that the lab considers outdated, which they would be throwing away anyways. Mark is satisfied with this answer, and tells her Sam's theory. Lisa states that Sam seems like a smart boy, maybe he can help.

At school the next day, Mark reveals the discovery to Sam. This causes Sam to literally freak out, including throwing things around as he realizes that his theory must be completely right. Mark manages to calm him down and once that happens, the scene goes to Sam looking at the alien technology in the basement. Sam wonders why the house's basement would be built around the alien technology but Mark doesn't know.

Pretty soon, Lisa brings the necessary lab equipment and they start to analyze the material. They determine that the alien tech is indeed some kind of communicator, but from what they can determine it's only one way. This leads Sam to believe that the technology must be some kind of storage device, that the aliens must have planted it on Earth incase something happened to their main storage device. This is the only theory they have, so they decide Sam must be right. They decide that they have to hack into the device.

The next scenes show them trying to hack into the device. Sam turns out to be a computer hacker genius, but even he has troubles even finding a way to get in. Their computers simply don't work the way our computers do-meaning our computers can't communicate with them. They are at an impasse and Sam realizes that he's useless. He stops coming over and so it's just up to Lisa and Mark. Lisa and Mark continue to try and solve it by themselves but without Sam, the unsolvable puzzle starts to put a strain on their relationship.

Eventually, Mark realizes that the only to communicate with the device is to build a similar device to it using human technology. He realizes that the device is somewhat similar to how a telegram used to work, so he does his best to find a way to build his own telegram machine. Lisa tries to help, but she makes one mistake and Mark accidentally snaps at her. She decides that it may be best to leave the artifact alone for a minute. Mark doesn't mark that decision and indeed he becomes more obsessive. Eventually he builds a modified telegram machine he feels will be able to pick up the device's info. He starts to use the machine, only to realize one thing.

The info inside the device is data: the telegram machine can only transmit messages but it can't really transmit data. Mark goes to teach his class. He seems to be not very interested in teaching them, and becomes the type of teacher where the kids can do whatever they want. Mark waits until the end of class and gets Sam's attention. Mark tells Sam that he needs a computer that can take a message from a telegram and turn it into data but to not tell Lisa about this project. Sam states he can do that, but he wonders why he doesn't want Lisa to work on it. Mark doesn't answer.

As Sam begins working on his program, Mark realizes he has to wait. He decides to go see for a swim, but he realizes that it doesn't bring him any enjoyment soon. He then decides to go to a teacher's party. While there, people try to interact with him but Mark isn't as charming as he used to be. Instead, he becomes a sort of a loner. Despite this, the same teachers who went to a Diner with him the last time decide to invite him. While there, they definably don't click again. They even try to talk to him about Die Hard, but Mark has lost interest in such regular things. Eventually they give up and even ditch him. Mark doesn't seem to mind.

On his drive home, he notices some kids playing with their parents at a park. He makes a comment thinking that the parents are wasting their time when they could be doing something productive. Eventually, Mark arrives home. He goes to Sam, and discover Sam is almost done with the program. Mark decides to go see his wife but can't find her. He tries calling her but he can't reach her at first. He doesn't seem to mind so much until she calls him back. She wonders why he's calling after this whole time, especially since she hasn't been living in the house with him. He realizes that she left him a while back and he didn't even know. Mark is speechless for a moment but he states that he's close to activating the device. She states she doesn't really care, and that he needs to back down to Earth.

The next day, Sam reveals that the device can now communicate with the computer and that they were wrong previously: the device can also send messages to the aliens. Mark thanks him and kicks out him, not wanting Sam to use the device anymore. This angers Sam but Mark actually punches him in the face. Sam looks hurt and betrayed at Mark and said he's the only friend Mark had. Mark states he doesn't need any kid as his friend, and that he doesn't even like kids. He doesn't want kids.

Mark is about to communicate with the aliens when he realizes that he should at least try and get his wife once more. He calls her and she's at work. She reveals that she's told the company about the device, and that once Sam has finished the software Alien Tech will be picking up the device. In fact, that was why they moved to New Mexico: Alien Tech was depending on Lisa on finding the device and secretly discovering how to use it. They didn't want the government or anyone else to know so that they could steal the alien technology and pass it off their own. They never told her, and she didn't know until now. Lisa had revealed the existence of the device to to them recently because she wanted her husband back. Mark feels a bit annoyed and tells her Sam hasn't finished.

Mark takes the time to communicate with the aliens, telling them to come to a field nearby the town. He then transfers the software to a USB drive and erases it from the computer. He keeps the USB drive in his pocket. He then takes apart his modified telegram machine, making it impossible for anyone to put it together as he has without spending too much time on it. He goes upstairs and looks outside. He sees everyone living their lives, oblivious to what's going on. He gives them a superior smug, as if he's better than they are. He goes to his truck and drives to the field.

Once at the field, Mark waits there and soon enough a UFO arrives. Aliens step out of the UFO and they look at him. Mark explains that he wants to go with the aliens, outside this world that he doesn't think he belongs in anymore. The aliens decide to grand his wish, and he gets to leave with them. The UFO then leaves with Mark, and he leaves the world behind. He doesn't feel sad, but rather he feels relieved.

Back on Earth, Lisa gets a call from Sam. Sam tells her that he had finished a while ago and Lisa realizes Mark lied to her. Lisa tells the company. Cut to Lisa and Sam and some company suits in the basement. The software is missing and the machine Mark built is in shambles. The suit states it shouldn't take that long to rebuild since a mere acting teacher had built it. Lisa then reveals that Mark actually had a degree not in theater but in mechanical engineering-he was one of the best students and was utterly brilliant. He parents had forced him to get that degree, even though his passion was in acting. The suits realized it would take a long time to rebuild everything but decide to get Lisa to start working on it. She refuses and quits on the spot, revealing that the reason she is pregnant with Mark's child and she doesn't want to obsess over this. She leaves, and the suits decide to get Sam to rebuild everything. He also refuses, stating that he's seen what this machine does to people. He leaves and the suits are left with having to find completely new people. The suits then reveal that this has happened before: “it looks like we're going to have to completely start over with a new scientist once again.” he says. The film ends.

A semi-filler I will finish over the next day or so:

The Horn

Genre: Action/Thriller

Cast: Liam Neeson (John Glanville), Norman Reedus (Fraiser), Michael Kenneth Williams (Nick), Mike Vogel (Kevin), Daniel Dae Kim (Lee), Kirk Acevedo (Cole)

Release Date: 9/16

Theater Count: 2750

Budget: $45 million

Running Time: 109 Minutes

MPAA Rating: R for intense action violence, strong language, and scenes of torture

Plot Summary:

The Spring Wind is a superfreighter carrying goods from France to India. It's crew includes John Glanville (Neeson), a weathered man with a past in the US Navy, Fraiser (Reedus), a bit of an antagonistic and brusque loner, Nick (Williams), a sharp and savvy technician, Kevin (Vogel), a young, energetic, and idealistic medi, Lee (Kim), the first officer who is a reassuring force, and Cole (Acevedo), a wisecracking freight loader. There are about two dozen people total in the crew.

The first part of the film introduces us to the ship and the crew as it journeys through the Mediterranean Sea, Suez Canal, and Red Sea. Lee tries to move the path as far east as possible but is overruled by the captain, who says he will risk pirate-prone waters to save fuel (and the money to buy fuel). We see the crew interact and see that John is a mostly quiet individual who associates with the crew's merriment only occasionally. We see him try to call someone but then hang up before any can answer. We also see Fraiser and Nick get into a scuffle that is broken up quickly, but there is bad blood between the two. We also see through a phone conversation that Kevin has a pregnant wife. After some more character scenes the Spring Wind enters the Arabian Sea and has to go within 100 miles of the Horn of Africa. Lee's fears are proven true when a Somali pirate ship approaches the freighter. Because of company policy, the freighter is unarmed aside from water cannons and other non-lethal tools. The crew uses the water cannons to try and fend off the rafts the Somali pirates use to approach closer while Lee radios for help and is told that a US Navy ship is a couple hours away but is moving fast. Eventually the Somali pirates board and quickly start beating down crew who look like they resist. A few who try to fight back with tools are shot and killed. John grabs a handful of crew members and leads them into a cargo hold and has them lock themselves inside one of the holds with some supplies. He then goes and disables the ship's engines so it can't travel. At that point he is finally found and subdued by several pirates, but not before he lays a beating on a couple. The pirates assemble the crew they found (minus those who are hiding) and are angry about the ship being disabled and that a US Navy ship is coming soon. Because their ship is too small to tow the freighter, the pirates have to leave it. Angry, they execute the captain (putting Lee in charge essentially) and herd the others, about a dozen, into the rafts and take them back to their mother ship, where the crew is tossed into a makeshift prison cell. Cole tries to make light of the situation and John says that the people in hiding will come out soon and let the Navy know what happened.

The second part of the film then has the dozen prisoners transported in poor condition to a seaside town where they are stashed in unsanitary cells. Lee tries to keep the crew in good spirits as the de facto leader and Kevin does what he can to tend to the crew's injuries. We see a couple short scenes showing their poor treatment (little food or water) and trying to stay alert. Eventually some pirates barge into the room and beat up a couple crew members badly, one of them dying even with Kevin's efforts to save his life. Afterwards John speculates that the pirates' negotiations for ransom aren't going well so they are taking their anger out on the crew. Fraiser says that if the pirates try to mess with him he'll go down fighting rather than take it. Lee tries to keep order, but the following day some pirates return again and point for a crewman to come with them. The man is unsure and Lee tells the pirates that they won't get a ransom if they mistreat the crew. The pirates answer by shooting Lee, killing him, and then they drag out Lee's body. This shocks the crew and John says enough is enough and they have to escape since they can't guarantee the Navy will save them in time. Kevin as a medic is unsure since the act could get them all killed, but Fraiser is in since he doesn't want to die in a hole in the ground. Nick is also in and says if they get some equipment during the escape he might be able to jury-rig a radio. Cole makes some humor about dying either way to encourage the others to join in. We then see a scene where John lays out the plan, the camera zooming around the pirate compound to show us where they'll go step by step. When asked how he can make up this plan, John says he used to be in the Navy. After a scene of preparation the plan goes into motion when two pirates enter the room and are quickly beaten down by the crew, who takes their weapons. The crew then goes through the plan step by step, quietly subduing a couple more guards and grabbing some needed food, water, and ammo, but then they are discovered and an alarm goes out. A big running shootout happens as the pirates try to stop the crewmen from escaping. Two of the ten remaining crewmen are killed and the others are pinned down, but then John is able to toss a grenade into a fuel storage area and the explosion wipes out a chunk of the base and the pirates and allows the 8 survivors to escape in a pair of small trucks.

The third part of the film then follows the 8 survivors as they go on the run. The two trucks run out of gas a few hours after the escape and the survivors have no choice but to travel on foot southwest through the wilderness of southern Somalia towards Kenya. Nick strips the trucks of their radio parts and does what he can to try and cobble together a radio with enough strength to reach the Navy or someone who can help. They have only a couple very rudimentary maps to guide their progress. We get a couple character scenes where John starts to open up to Kevin, who is very anxious about being a new dad and hopes he'll have the chance to see his unborn child. John says a little about how he is estranged from his children because of some bad events in the past. We also see Fraiser and Nick getting tense with one another. Cole is able to break them up before another fight happens. One day on a hill they see several trucks in the distance and think it is a band of the pirates pursuing them out of anger. Sure enough it is the pirates and they try to attack the survivors on the hill. It is a tough shootout but John's planning and super fighting skills leads to a couple pirate trucks being blown up and the rest having to flee. The victory isn't without cost as one of the 8 crewmen is killed and another is wounded fairly seriously (both are nobodies). A couple others have minor wounds but nothing to be bothered about. The crew starts to move out again but the survivors are slowed down by the wounded man, whose condition is precarious no matter what Kevin does. Fraiser complains about the slow pace and comments they would be better off to leave the man behind. We get a couple short scenes of the travel and we get the sense that something is following the group.

One night the 7 survivors are camped and Cole who is supposed to be watch falls asleep and the result is that everyone is woken up by the sound of growling and someone screaming. Everyone wakes up to find the wounded man missing but a small trail of blood and torn clothing leading one way. Shouting, they follow the trail and quickly find the torn, dead body of the man, and John sees a glimpse of an animal in the shadows. He says they are being stalked by at least one feline predator, either a leopard or a lion. Everyone else is freaked out by that but John says if they have multiple stand watch with weapons they have nothing to fear. Cole is apologetic but Fraiser says good riddance since they can move fast. The 6 remaining crewmen (the 5 names and 1 last nobody) continue their hike and after a couple short scenes we see they are now close to running out of food and water. We also see hints that they are still being followed. Nick finally gets some sort of radio running and they try to use it. For a brief period they think they make contact but it soon breaks up. Their spirits are raised since with a better signal they could go farther, so John directs them to a tall hill a couple days walk away they can use. With low food and water the hike is hard and finally in the night the predators come again, a pair of female lions. One quickly kills the last nobody survivor and the other menaces Cole, who is frightened and fires wildly with his gun. He misses and the lion pounces and starts to shred him. Fraiser gets a clean shot and kills that lion, but too late to save Cole. The other lion lunges at Kevin and knocks him down but then John tackles the lion and wrestles with it before stabbing it with a big knife, killing it. The group is now down to 4. We also see that some Somali pirates are still trying to pursue a ways off and they heard the gunshots. Kevin is shook up but John calms him and says they need to reach the hill quickly.

The 4 survivors trek towards the hill and when they get to the base they see dust trails in the distance, indicating pirate trucks heading their way. John says they have to get a signal and can't move until they do and Fraiser doubts Nick's radio will work, pessimistic about it all. Nick finally calls Fraiser out on his crap and verbally kicks Fraiser's butt. That night John and Kevin bond some more and we learn about why John is estranged and how he can't bring himself to contact his children again. The next morning they climb a good ways up the hill as the dust trails get closer and Nick uses the radio again on an emergency channel and with the signal boost is able to get through to someone in the US Navy. Nick briefly identifies who they are and is told that the Navy's been trying to find them for days now and can triangulate the radio signal if the radio stays on. They keep the radio on and then see several trucks and jeeps near the hill's base. It is the pirates once again. With only 4 men left who are tired, hungry, thirsty, and low on ammo, things look grim. Several pirates attack on foot first but are quickly driven off. A second attack then comes with the trucks and jeeps coming closer, one of the jeeps having a machine gun on top. Nick is wounded in the arm and John tells him to take the radio and climb to higher ground since the radio is giving off their signal to the Navy. As Nick does that, Fraiser says there are too many and he'll even the odds for the others. He grabs two of the three grenades the group has and charges, throwing one each at a different jeep before getting riddled with bullets. The two grenades blow up the two jeeps and some pirates, making things easier. The pirates briefly pull back, giving John and Kevin a chance to check on Nick. Then the remaining pirates attack again, sending a couple guys around the side to flank. Kevin is wounded in the chest and John has Nick drag Kevin back to the radio while he holds off the enemy. Nick does that but then the couple flanking pirates show up. Nick feigns him and Kevin surrendering but then gets the drop on the two pirates and shoots them. Kevin then gives Nick instructions on how to administer life-saving first aid to Kevin. John meanwhile shoots until he down to a few bullets and sees the last grenade and decides to make a last stand. He leaps out from behind cover, running as he throws his grenade, which blows up a truck and a couple guys, and shoots with his gun until he is out of ammo and wounded twice. As the remaining pirates start to advance towards him, a mechanical noise is heard in the distance. It is a pair of helicopters. The surviving pirates panic and run to the remaining vehicles to drive off, but the machine guns on the helicopters destroy the vehicles and everyone in them. The helicopters land as Nick pulls Kevin back down to John and they are met by Navy medics, who start administering first aid. They're all loaded in the helicopters, which fly off as the pilots say they have the survivors.

The film jumps to a hospital ship, where John wakes up to find Kevin and Nick by him with a doctor, who says they'll all be ready to go home in a couple days. They then have some visitors: the handful of crew members John hid away and who are ecstatic to see John, Nick, and Kevin all alive. After the reunion John is cleared to go for a walk and he walks onto the open deck and Kevin follows to talk. After some talking, John says Kevin's qualities that make him a good medic will make him a great father. Kevin reminds John that he still has a chance to be a good father but he needs to take it. John agrees and the film ends with him finally making the call he's put off for so long.
