when does Amazing Spider-Man open. Is there big expectations.

May 1. There is huge expectations for it. No competition (no other movies are coming out that week) and high surcharges should see it zoom past $1m OD. If it does not break the OD record set by Spider-Man 3, it would be a massive disappointment.

Godzilla opens two weeks later I noticed. That could hurt

I'm not so sure that it will hurt The Amazing Spider-Man 2's box office as big competition since it's an unproven project and besides, TASM 2 will rake in a lot of business in its first week. TASM 2 has 2 holidays in its first 6 days so even if Godzilla were to surprise 2 weeks later, it would only affect TASM 2's earnings by a few hundred thousand at the most.

Incredible for Captain America 2. It now has a shot at 3m this weekend. Naked Ambition didn't do too badly considering the III rating. Noah had an OK increase today. Good for Kano. Fantastic for Non-Stop. Divergent had a nice bump. Great for The Great Budapest Hotel.

April 3 Weekend Estimates

1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - $2,980,000

2. Naked Ambition - $820,000

Captain America displaced Noah to take the top spot this week. It more than doubled Captain America's OW as it shot up 145% from the original's OW. What makes its OW even more impressive is the competition it had to contend with. Naked Ambition was definitely no flop as it carried the runner-up position proudly and held its own against tough competition.

  Daily admissions (OW)
  Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Total
Captain America 31,438 24,473 45,938 33,602 135,451
Captain America 2 30,942 37,871 72,031 63,688 204,532
Gap -496 12,902 38,995 69,081

For reference's sake. Captain America 2 punched Captain America's lights out in admissions.

Encouraging signs for Captain America 2 is that the family/couples crowd came through for it. Weekend reviews have pushed its rating to an average of 84%, which is considered to be quite high.

Monday admissions (so far)

1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - 6,389

It fell 54% from its opening day pre-sales. That's not particularly bad but it's not great either.

Onto this week where local film The Midnight After creeps into cineplexes. Theaters will have a tough time deciding on which film to give its biggest screen to. Most have opted for The Midnight After although it is expected that the business district will side with Captain America 2. It's unclear if theaters will give The Midnight After 3 screens at night given Captain America 2's explosion on opening weekend. If theaters do decide to give The Midnight After 3 screens, then most theaters will run with either of these scenarios:

The Midnight After (biggest screen/4th biggest/5th biggest)/Captain America 2 (2nd biggest, 3rd biggest, 6th biggest) or

Captain America 2 (biggest screen/3rd biggest/6th biggest)/The Midnight After (2nd biggest/4th biggest/5th biggest). Holdovers will get slaughtered although Naked Ambition will be granted a stay of execution since it's only going to be in its 2nd week of release.

1. Captain America 2 - $2,772,728
2. Naked Ambition - $786,681
Nymphomaniac Volume 1 - $38,689
A Tale of Samurai Cooking - A True Love Story - $21,923
Kano - will break $257,928 by today
The Grand Budapest Hotel - $348,203

Noah, Non-Stop, Divergent and That Awkward Moment were not reported due to no precise figures given.

Captain America 2 was overestimated but it still doubled Captain America's OW and it still beat its total in just 4 days. Naked Ambition did quite well. Not really great for Nympomaniac Volume 1 and A Tale of Samurai Cooking. Good for Kano. The Grand Budapest Hotel is posting solid numbers.

At Festival Walk, The Midnight After gets 2 screens at night while Captain America 2 sees an increase in showtimes and 3 screens at night. The reason why Captain America 2 received more showtimes this week is because The Midnight After was bestowed the coveted biggest screen (which has more than 2x seat advantage next to the 2nd biggest theater: 354 seats: 156 seats) and therefore, the theater had to soften the blow by giving Captain America 2 2-3 screens. Overall, Captain America 2 will lose 30% of seats at night.

  Naked Ambition 3D - 10 showings (▼ 12) Nymphomaniac Volume 1
  Divergent - 1 showing (▼ 2)
  Kano - 1 showing (=)

At Langham Place, showings are spread out quite evenly with The Midnight After and Captain America 2 with 13 showings apiece. Naked Ambition is not far behind with 10 3D showings. All 3 films will have two showings at 7 PM. Altogether, those 3 films combine for 94% of the showings on Thursday. Currently, The Midnight After has the advantage with the bigger theaters at 7 PM and 3 showings at 9 PM while Captain America has 3 showings at midnight.

  Naked Ambition - 3 showings (▲ 0)
  Naked Ambition 3D (Males only) - 1 showing (▲ 0)
  Noah - 1 showing (▲ 0)
  Divergent - 2 showings (▲ 1)

Yes, you read that right. Cine Times will host a gimmick 3D screening of Naked Ambition for males only. UA has done this in the past. They did it in 2011 when Sex & Zen was released and they threw a females only bash for a couple of nights (I can't recall if it was Langham Place or if it was Times Square that showed it.).

The Midnight After and Captain America 2 tie with 9 showings each. Captain America 2 though has the edge here with the biggest screen and the inflated ticket prices thanks to installing Dolby Atmos at their theater.

Didn't realize 3 Idiots did that well in HK. What total did it end up with?

$3,019,322. It accrued a 41x multiplier and was the biggest international territory (apart from India, of course). You can read more about the 3 Idiots article I wrote here.

Note: These pre-sales were taken at 9 PM.

Strong pre-selling at night. Afternoon and morning pre-sales are slow. Midnights seem to be getting some action. It must have something to do with the title.

Interestingly, theaters that have released early weekend showtimes for The Midnight After are seeing night shows sell out faster than the afternoon.

The Midnight After should start off with about 12,000 in pre-sales. Most theaters will be showing it although curiously, 3 Newport theaters have left it off of their schedules.

Well, that was unexpected.

I knew that The Midnight After would command a lot of pre-sales but what I am surprised about is that Naked Ambition 3D is beating Captain America 2. Very surprising that Captain America 2 could only muster 8 tickets outside of the night shows. Meanwhile, that is really good for The Midnight After. It obliterates everything at night and is doing better in the afternoon than both openers from last week. Overflow from the 7 PM showtimes will start to seep through to the 5 PM showings soon. Midnights are superb but it is strange that the 12:30 AM showing is doing better than the midnight showing.

I will check back later tonight to see how much Captain America 2 improves and if it passes Naked Ambition.

Pre-sales have been quite telling. The Midnight After is beating Captain America 2 everywhere including the business district. Even Yves Saint Laurent is rounding up more admissions than the superhero at the more expensive theaters. The Midnight After is nearly up 5:1 over Captain America 2 at The GRAND at night (that includes 3D Atmos, 3D and 2D versions for CA2).

It has been complete domination by The Midnight After so far. I give The Midnight After 65% chance of winning this weekend. Captain America 2 can still pull this out but it really needs to pick up (higher ticket prices will not sell themselves). Even if it does 3/4 business of The Midnight After, it can still win. Weekend for The Midnight After will be key. After the opening day frenzy, it will need to sustain its opening day prowess through the weekend. Most Cat. III movies do not jump that high on the weekend so we will see if it follows that trend or if it deviates from it. Right now, I see The Midnight After opening with 1.3m this weekend and Captain America 2 tallying 1.1m (-60%).

Great for The Midnight After. With little to maneuver at night, tickets have started to shift to the 5 PM shows. All sections of the day saw some movement from morning to afternoon to night and to midnights.

Much better for Captain America 2 at night. Troubling to see so many gooseeggs for it though. At least it passed Naked Ambition.

Good for Naked Ambition. Guess the big local film counteracting it did not affect it that much.

About what was expected for The Midnight After. Since most night shows are filling up quite quickly, I'd say the target for today is around 25,000-26,000 admissions.

Not good for Captain America 2, particularly since opening day was not frontloaded due to the Saturday holiday. Walk-ins will have to be brisk to pass The Midnight After today. Very good for Naked Ambition. The tepid reviews did not seem to hurt it. Yves Saint Laurent did OK. It is doing good at some locations but it has been weak in most. Noah tumbled again. Bad reviews really sunk this ship. Terrible for Enthralled. They should not have bothered to release it this week with two higher profile Cat. III releases. Great hold for Kano. Bad for The Chinese Puzzle. Twelve Nights is not doing well. It will leave Hong Kong soon. Divergent had a good hold but drops will be much hurder this weekend.

Alright for Yves Saint Laurent. Still bad for Enthralled. Great for Kano. Awful for Noah. Mediocre for Divergent. Decent for The Chinese Puzzle. Weak for Nymphomaniac Volume 1.

Pretty good for The Midnight After. It should be able to do 28,000 today. Strong increase for Captain America 2. It's one of only 2 films in the top 10 to see a decrease from its Thursday pre-sales' week-to-week hold. Enormous jump for Kano.

* The number in brackets refers to the number of biggest screens it is getting. Ex. if one film has 2 biggest screens while the other film has one, that means that particular theater has 3 screens that have the same number of seats.

At Broadway, most theaters are giving the biggest screen to The Midnight After, however, those in the business district or those that cater more toward foreigners have given it to Captain America 2.

UA, meanwhile, have done a 180 and has given the biggest screen to Captain America 2 on Saturday. Langham Place have split the biggest screens between Captain America 2 and The Midnight After with both occupying their own big screen all day.

The GRAND has been a huge superhero supporter in the past so it is no surprise that they have put Captain America 2 way out in front in showtimes this weekend.

By Sunday April 13thCaptain America: The Winter Soldier:: HK$38,314,365=$4.94mThe Midnight After ow HK$8,819,868=$1.14M

That's almost double what TFA did in dollars. I'm good with that. Can it push close to 6M total or is that too much?
