BO.com top 100 movie lines of all time: May the force be with you, number 1

Recommended Posts

Back in September of 2013, a panel of 12 people were commissioned to determine the 100 greatest movie lines of all time.  This panel consisted of all different backgrounds, ages and nationalities.  We wanted to get a true representation of the forums.  The panel ranges from those who work in the industry to those who just love film and everyone in between.  Your panel who determined this list and the order the lines fall in is as follows:

Shawnmr

blankments

75 live

chasmmi

riczhang

jake gittes

coolio

Stingray

We spent months coming up with the best lines in the history of film.  We initially came up with around 500 lines that we eventually had to get down to 100.

We chose lines based on their historical relevance, longevity (for some) and of course the lines that entertained  us over the years.

Lines from all different eras made out list.  The final list has lines that date back to the 30's and lines from the 2000's and everywhere in between.

I'd like to give a MASSIVE SHOUT OUT to CHASSMI who calculated them all.  Without him, we might all be here until next month figuring it all out.  THANK YOU CHAS!

Without further ado, here are your first ten lines.

100) Everyone knows you never go full retard: Tropic Thunder

Tropic Thunder is a 2008 film written by Ben Stiller and Justin Theroux.  Robert Downey Jr. plays Kirk Lazarus, the dude playing a dude disguised as another dude.  Tropic Thunder is a biting, sharp satire.  it pokes fun at Hollywood, actors, directors and everything in between.  One of the reasons this is so remembered is that the line is an absolute truth, which makes it that much funnier.

This line is one of newer ones to make the list.  It also beat out some other classic lines.

99) ..you've gotta ask yourself a question. "Do I feel lucky?"  Well do you punk?" Dirty Harry 1971

Dirty Harry is the first of many Dirty Harry movies starring Clint Eastwood.  Written by Harry and Rita Fink, Dirty Harry was the film that created the Clint Eastwood legend.  Known mostly for his roles in a plethora of Westerns, Dirty Harry was the first film in which Eastwood got to show his iconic tough guy image and capitalized on his grumpy delivery that he became famous for.

98) One, two, Freddy's comin' for you.  Nightmare on Elm Street 1984

Written by Wes Craven, this line first appeared in the movie in a dream sequence. Children in white were jumping rope while reciting what seemed like an innocent rhyme.  Craven said he got the idea for the film from an article he read about where kids actually feared death because of their dreams.  They complained to the adults who naturally dismissed their fears as irrational.  They later passed away in their sleep.

Freddy Krueger has gone on to become one of the most famous horror icons in history.

Nightmare on Elm Street was nominated for a Saturn award for best horror film of 1984

97) Stupid is as stupid does. Forrest Gump 1994

Winston Groom wrote the novel in which Eric Roth adapted into a screenplay.  Forrest Gump is a somewhat mentally challenged individual who loves his mama, his best friend, his girl and his lieutenant.  When people ask him if he's stupid, he replies with the line that helped make him famous.

Eric Roth won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay.

96) I bet you can squeal like a pig! Weeee! Deliverance 1972

James Dickey adapted his own novel and in the process he created a film that, 40 years later, still scares the hell out of men everywhere.  Over the years the line has been distorted to the point where people think it's, "I'm going to make you squeal like a pig."

The scene has Ned Beatty tied up, alone in the forest.  One of the mountain men is behind him, taunting him.  He then rapes him and yells that line to him.  It's a horrifying moment in the movie and one that has remained in our vernacular years after it's release.

James Dickey was nominated for a Golden Globe for best adapted screenplay.

95) Game over man! Game over.  Aliens 1986

In 1984, James Cameron was a struggling peon in Hollywood.  He was a nobody.  Then he wrote the script for Terminator and everything changed.  During Terminator's run, and when Cameron was doing some work for the VHS release, he was approached to write the screenplay for both Rambo First Blood Part II and the follow up to one of the most famous films of the 70's, Alien.  He was completely overwhelmed and almost turned down Aliens but after speaking with a close friend, who told him that he might never have this chance again, he agreed to do all three films consecutively and or at the same time.

Bill Paxton played Hudson and delivered the line to perfection.

The only nomination Aliens would receive for the screenplay was from the academy of science fiction and horror.

94) I have a very bad feeling about this. Star Wars: A New Hope 1977

George Lucas wrote the screenplay for Star Wars.  Some of the screenplay was so odd in language that Sir Alec Guiness had difficulty with some of the lines.  He wasn't the only one.

This iconic line has been uttered in many of the SW films, but the first time was by Luke as they are approaching the Death Star.  The line has usually been uttered as "I've got a bad feeling about this."  In the first film, Luke adds a "very".

Lucas was nominated for best original screenplay.

93 When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk. The Good, the bad and the Ugly 1966

Sergio Leone directed this and wrote the screenplay with three others.  Considered one of the best Spaghetti Westerns, Clint Eastwood went from well known actor to icon when making these films.  Known as one of the "Man with no name" films.  Shockingly this was not nominated for any Academy Awards.

92) Leave the gun, take the cannoli. The Godfather 1972

The Godfather is considered to be one of the best films of all time.  It's revered not only by film critics, but by historians, fans, other thespians and industry professionals.  Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay and went on to win best original screenplay.  What makes the Godfather so well liked is that it is first and foremost a film about family and loyalty.  Yes, it's about a very powerful crime syndicate but at the heart of it all is the love of a family.  The Godfather might be one of the most quoted films in history.  I don't have an official count but The Godfather had many lines that were submitted by the panel, some that made it, some that didn't.

91) I killed him for money - and a woman - and I didn't get the money and I didn't get the woman. Double Indemnity 1944  Nominated for 7 Oscars including best original screenplay, it lost all of them.  That doesn't change the fact that Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler wrote an iconic script and considered one of the best of the 1940's.  Considered one of the riskiest films of the time because it told you who the killer was at the beginning of the film.  Instead of trying to figure out who the perpetrator was, there was more of an emphasis on how the crime was pulled off, what mistakes were made during the murder and so on.  The line is kind of a microcosm for the feel of the film.
