  1. I have very mixed feelings about Avatar. It does transport you to another world and is leagues ahead of Michael Bay's output in terms of action, storytelling, etc. But even Cameron's biggest fans (of which I count myself as one) have to admit it's one of his weakest screenplays. The characters have no depth, the themes are clumsily handled and there is no quotable dialogue. As much as I love the "kill all the stupid humans" ending, we're given no reason to root for the Na'vi beyond them looking beautiful (as others have said, their culture is too "perfect" to be believable). The visuals have definitely lost some of their wow factor, too. I wouldn't bet against Cameron, but unless he has a much better script or some new technology planned for the sequels it will be very hard for them to replicate the first one's success.
  2. Look at Iceland! There must be nothing to do there except watch movies and play hide the salami

  4. I never knew she was so old. She didn't get her first screenplay produced until she was 42! Gives all us budding writers some hope.RIP. When Harry Met Sally was a classic.
  5. While I greatly admire TDK, I don't believe it's plot and character development is as superior to TA as everyone claims. In some parts it feels more like a remake of Heat than a superhero movie, and it loses much of the goodwill built up in the first two acts by awkwardly rushing through Dent's turn to the dark side. Nolan's Kubrick like aloofness also works against the film - for example, I found Coulson's death to have more emotional impact than Rachel Dawes', even though the latter character has far more screen time. TA has flaws, too, but the constant sense of fun more than makes up for that. Overall, I would give TA an A and TDK an A-.
  6. Anyone think TA2 can do $1 billion+ internationally? I think TA has converted a lot of countries that weren't big fans of superhero movies before, and that audience will only get bigger after it's released on DVD/Blu-ray.
  7. The message of Avatar was fine. I just don't buy that great 3D excuses a medicore screenplay.
  8. So why did TA do better than Avatar in pretty much every central and south American country? Do they love superhero movies more than the rest of the world?
  9. I just realised that Avengers hasn't passed TPM's total because of the 3D re-release this year. Go Jar Jar!
  10. I agree. TA had better WOM than Avatar.
  11. Here's what I could gather for the UK from BFI's statistical yearbooks:1. The Avengers £50.9 million*2. The Dark Knight £48.8 million3. Spider-Man 3 £33.5 million4. The Incredibles £32.0 million5. Spider-Man £28.6 million6. Spider-Man 2 £26.4 million7. Hancock £24.4 million8. Iron Man 2 £21.2 million9. X2 £20.7 million10. Batman Forever £20.0 million*=still in releasePretty sure it's complete though I'm not sure if Batman Forever is truly in 10th place because data from pre-2002 is pretty hard to come by.
  12. While I don't like the fact that Burton's worst movie is his most successful, the success of the movie wasn't surprising at all. 3D+Depp+Family Audience pretty much guarantees a billion or close to it. And honestly, while the film wasn't made for older Burton fans like me, my three year old daughter loves it so I give it a pass for that.
  13. Probably the best Alan Moore adaptation. A few rough spots but any movie that makes you immediately want to overthrow your government gets a thumbs up from me!
  14. It was hillarious how hard Disney tried to get Hercules to cross $100 million. They kept it in cinemas until December (it came out in June!) and it still only made $99,046,791
  15. It was a fun movie and Bowden was hot. Would make a good double bill with Cabin in the Woods.
  16. They have to give it some reward for being the most successful movie ever made not directed by James Cameron It's either that or Sound FX and Visual FX is more likely, especially if Hobbit disappoints.
  17. They still could have made the book ending work if Voldy's death had more "oomph". Having him just slowly fall apart was not a satisfying conclusion for the main villain after eight movies, especially since he "died" in similar ways in the first and second movies.
  18. Because it's half a movie, and that automatically makes it better than Avengers, which is a complete movie
  19. Avengers total passed Dark Knight and several Potters. Next target: The Phantom Menace
  20. I think it's funny when people complain about TA making so much money and putting it down for "just being a fun movie" like that's any kind of criticism. It reminds me of the Trekkies' outrage that Abrams reboot was actually an entertaining movie.
  21. I knew TA would go up. It was super busy Sunday at my cinema. Now it just needs a small drop next week and it still has a chance at a 3x multiplier!
  22. The real question is what will be the first MCU film to be a failure, either critically or commercially? Incredible Hulk was a slight disappointment at the box office but not enough to ruin their streak. I have doubts about the directors chosen for Cap 2, so hopefully that isn't the one. Marvel's films have been remarkably consistent in their quality so far, but there's always the danger that Disney forces them to make a movie purely for monetary reasons, like what happened with Pixar and Cars 2. Even if any of the solo movies fail, though, I still don't see it hurting Avengers 2.
  23. I don't want Disney/Marvel to buy back X-Men. That would mean they'd want to do a crossover and IMO mutants do not belong in the same universe as regular superhumans.
