Weekdays Thread: Barbie $9.1M MON | $9.6M TUES
TheDarkKnightOfSteel replied to Gavin Feng's topic in Numbers and Data
I am not actually sure what you guys are talking about precisely but I just want to tell that of all the Oscar snubs I always find myself baffled how Hans Zimme did not win for Interstellar. -
I like Matt Smith and I think he is a great actor but let’s be honest here…you need a more likeable face to lead such a franchise. Like Driver is not your typically handsome HW actor either but he has a likeable face. My English are not the best to express what I am trying to say here so I hope I won’t be misunderstood. I am not calling Smith ugly or dislike in any case. Kirby is a fantastic choice. We will see about the others.

BARBIE | 809.4M overseas | 1445.6M worldwide

I don’t know if it has been reported but Barbie actually increased in Greece compared to last week. This has not happened since The Joker, a movie that ultimately sold more than 1M admission and is in the all time top 5 in the country. At this rate Barbie could end up in the top 15 as well I think. -

Presales for Monday in Greece are insane. Lots of near-sold out showing. In Greece we don’t typically choose cinema on Monday and we don’t do presales. What a beast. Wednesday with the discount is gonna be a bloodbath. -
I think people are forgetting that capacity was absolutely an issue for both Barbie and Oppenheimer. And imo Barbie will play more like Wonder Woman than they other female skewing movies that everyone keeps bringing up. Where these movies were seen as popular from women, Wonder Woman and now Barbie are seen as important. So I think it could very well leg it out to something ridiculous like 500M +. Is it certain? Absolutely not. Is it impossible? Absolutely not. PS no matter what Barbie end up doing, it is already a massive win for everyone involved. I am baffled how WB did not try to commit Gerwig to ensue a sequel soon and now she is committed on doing those Netflix Narnia films.

Not taking anything away from Gosling and especially Gerwig but Robbie was totally the biggest reason why Barbie succeeded. She is extraordinarily beautiful and has the classic Barbie look down to a T but I won’t even focus on looks… there are plenty of blonde hair/ blue eyes actresses out there. But this character in the hands of a less capable actress would end up looking like a caricature. Robbie delivered a fantastic performance that connected with the target audience. Even in the 2 minutes trailers she was sincere and charming and confident. Like I love Anne Hathaway to death but her Barbie would not click the same way. I won’t even talk about the Amy Schumer version…

I believe Barbie will see better legs compared to your typical summer blockbusters. For one, it ain't a superhero film. Actually i think it will play like one superhero film and that's Wonder Woman. 500M DOM is within reach for Barbie. And given its results in LATAM and Europe, Barbie will make over 1B. It won't go over Mario but 1.1B maybe. A huge win all thing considered, even if it doesn't reach that hight. I get that the writing's on the wall with this one but a month ago sited were giving it a 40M ow.

Biggest theatre chain in Greece has now taken showings from all other movies and have given them to Barbie. Basically they only play Barbie now. I checked all locations and the vast majority is sold out with few being near-sold out for opening day. And it actually has many sold out showing throughout out the weekend. The most impressive thing is that Thursday- Sunday are not typical the day that Greeks choose to go to a movie. I am absolutely at awe at Barbie’s presales. It is performing like an event comic book movie in a pre-Covid world or like NWH. Absolutely bonkers. PS Oppenheimer does not open here until August.

Ummm WTF…Barbie is selling great in Greece. It has about 15 near sold out showing in Athens through out its opening weekend and most of them are in freaking Thursday. Like this may not seem like a lot but in Greece we do not to presales and definitely not presales on a Thursday for a film that opens in a week unless it is a huge ass Marvel event film. In fact I don’t recall Marvel’s latest films being this presales heavy. This about to become WB’s biggest success here since The Joker in Greece (obviously not on the same level as TJ because that was just a one of a kind juggernaut here — top 5 movies of all time with week to week increases and extraordinary legs ).

Margot Robbie is trending on Greek twitter with all kinds of “icon” “queen” “goddess” tweets. This some times happens in Greece with HW actors after a huge ass success, never before. Last time I saw something similar with a HW actor was Henry Cavill after Witcher S1…and still that was for a tv show anyone could watch and still not at the same level.
