  1. But should we buy into the tabloids when DOR has been able to retain a cast through his last three films? I don't doubt he was actual asshole in the 90s, but I don't buy the whole JLaw fight.
  2. Compromise. Self-aware? I found TFIOS pseudo-intelligent and aware of its pitfalls, yet that wasn't enough.
  3. I don't think so! I have a student industry badge, though, so I don't really know. IIRC correctly there are ticket packages you can get for most events. The galas are hella expensive, but then some packages are almost normal movie price.
  4. I definitely understand that. It is my entire travel budget and I am staying in a hostel and got a great deal on a student badge.
  5. I kind of give all of these directors benefit of the doubt and say that if there is a good final product and it makes it's money, they get a pass. DOR is especially safe because people bitch about him being bad with people. Yet he pulls Oscar and other award nominations out of actors like no one else in the history of ever. He must be doing something right.
  6. Pigeon won't be for everyone! But it was completely engulfed in the atmosphere and actually cried during the last villanelle because of how perfectly it tied everything together
  7. I thought It Follows was cool because of the STD parable, so the ending kind of made perfect sense in that case.
  8. My all year list is so pretentious. I've seen a lot of movies, damn. 4 Stars 1. A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence 2. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl 3. Inside Out 4. Clouds of Sils Maria 5. Mad Max: Fury Road 6. About Elly 6. Timbuktu 3.5 Stars 7. Duke of Burgundy 8. Testament of Youth 9. It Follows 3 Stars 10. Ex Machina 11. Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter 12. The Overnight 13. What We Do In The Shadows 2.5 Stars 14. Maps to the Stars 15. Spy 16. Juaja 17. Trainwreck 18. Dope 2 Stars 19. Jurassic World 1.5 Stars 20. Southpaw 21. Entourage 1 Star 22. Aloha
  9. My top five is so weird in comparison lol. 1. A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence 2. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl 3. Inside Out 4. Mad Max: Fury Road 5. Testament of Youth If Testament of Youth is in a theater by you, GO SEE IT. It is fantastic and emotional as hell.
  10. What about Carol and Hateful Eight?!? I would be surprised to see Adam Jones actually come out this year.
  11. Wait, isn't that exactly what it means? That's a percentage of how many professional critics liked the movie. That is like saying, few winning games ≠ bad sports team. Just like people like bad sports teams people can like bad movies. It doesn't change the fact that they are bad.
  12. Is this a joke? I think I might be too dense lol. A 1.76 multiplier would be pitiful especially since most of us think this will score with critics. It is probably a joke and I fell for the trap. :/
  13. I actually have a review website and and definitely part of the target audience for "critic-baiting" movies. But, what an abysmal, inaccurate and generic film that really degraded the genius of an openly gay man and made him some unlikable coward. Still can't get over how much award traction that got.
  14. Damn. Lubezki is a genius. Certainly his third in a row. That whole natural light concept is so impossibly hard and it looks like he nailed it. The rhythmic breathing juxtaposed with the drums was annoying. This is probably not going to nab Leo that Oscar though, it doesn't really cater to what the Academy usually likes. Unpopular opinion: Leonardo Dicaprio is a ham and has not been ripped off of an Oscar. He just hasn't deserved one yet.
  15. Eh. You're kind of selling your opinions as facts. Accents matter less to the Awards bodies then people make it out for. I found her performance in CF fine, but her American Hustle performance was pretty damn impressive. It was a layered portrayal of a young woman who grew up too fast and is completely lost in her own devices. I thought when she tearfully said "I don't like change" (after her date) was incredibly effecting and one of her best on screen moments. It isn't like it was just the AAMPS that ate up her performance, it was all of the critics too. Hell, most of them awarded Lawerence of Lupita. Besides, Lawerence was nominated in supporting and she is lead in Hunger Games. They could award both if they felt inclined. Furthermore, I think DOR movies seem similar because they have a great energy to them. Aesthetically, Joy looks far different than his other work. His cinematography is usually quite bland, but here it looks dreamy and really Christmas-y. Would it be fun if the Academy didn't award the same directors and topics every year? Hell yeah. But DOR is kind of like Scorsese to me. Their movies are each clearly their own and they appeal to the Academy. I don't like to think that they are actually prying for nominations and awards.
  16. Some really good reviews from test screenings. Apparently the trailer actually undersells how funny the movie is. That makes me really excited. The part with Maya Rudolph kills me.
  17. This will probably do quite well over-seas,yeah? Why is Mara in this? How is this what her career needs? Love her to death, but strange choice in her part.
