  1. @IronJimbo Some consolation prize for you, (in fact all for us) who may not be able to live long enough for the sequel
  2. https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2021/03/marvel-studios-and-the-russos-congratulate-james-cameron-as-avatar-reclaims-top-box-office-spot Marvel Studios and the Russos Congratulate James Cameron as Avatar Reclaims Top Box Office Spot
  3. I believe many of us stay cooperative and vigilant so that we can bring big screen experience back as soon as possible. Big screen experience is irreplaceable. Size matters and it always matter
  4. Ultimate betrayal from a lazy socially-incapable brat, a future without cinema is intolerable.
  5. From the way I see, Minari stand a far better chance than The farewell last year, benefit from the buzz from Parasite and the positive perception around Korean-theme film. Minari didn't have to deal with a Parasite-like competitor like how Parasite overshadowed Farewell. Also, Minari is far more US-centric than the farewell. The farewell largely took place in China while Minari is American dream experience, which should play closer to American heart in general. The only disadvantage Minari have is the lack of star power, while Awakfina last year was the center of the farewell's buzz. The release strategy or box office numbers shouldn't have impact this year since all films suffered the same.
  6. I still have GvK as "cinema is back" movie, subject to its review. Now i am pegging this at 20m opening, the real first 20m openers during pandemic season. To be frank, given its protagonist aren't white nor black. And this movie have nothing to do with USA (South east asia based). Coincidentally most of the opened cinema are in white-majority areas, this posted some limitation to its box office success . I am saying this because Coco did "only" 209m which was lower compared to other Pixar films
  7. This is a norm for the past GG winner. The revenant, la la land, green book, 3 billboards all suffered backlash after their GG win The NYC cinema reopening is just in time for Normadland to just for award buzz box office, especially considering NY is a big hub for artsy movie.
  8. Finally, the statement of nobody care award show come to realisation this year! Jokes aside, pretty much every movie-related event got sidelined in the past 12 months. This forum has been very quiet since pandemic hit.
  9. Tina and Fey have done their best to keep things together. Can you imagine to pull a responsive jokes in a half-empty room with most of the attendance are too busy in the past 12 months fighting covid, probably can't get half of the jokes delivered, and both of them still have to pretend everything was just as festive as pre-covid time when there are 500k+ extra death alone in USA. .
  10. What if Close sweeping the entire season only to have Colman taking statue away last minute at the Oscar? I believe Close will suicide on the spot.
  11. Not only the rating of ceremonies but this bunch of nominees will likely be the least talked and seen.
  12. Yet could be the least talked or seen in 93 years. Have never seen a so uneventful Oscar since started follow the race in Hurt Locker year
  13. If Blockbuster cease to exist , so will USA domination.
  14. How can you expect and jump on the high train that this garbage and disgrace to hit >1b? Even 700m is considered too much for me. This could be the worst WW 700m grosser to me
  15. Normally by this stage of award season, I would have seen more than half of eventual Oscar best picture nominees. Unfortunately this year i haven't seen one. I am waiting if cinema in my country can be reopened and allow showing some of the films like normadland, soul. If not, i would have to pirate them......in fact i have pirated few of them, just haven't start watching.
  16. While last week was CNY , boosted further by Valentine, it is still interesting to see how CNY openers drop on their 2nd shortened weekend. DC3 drops nearly 89% Hi Mom - 17% A Writer's Odyssey -58%
  17. DC3 getting USD1b is like seeing Suicide squad got 1b in domestic. Just like wandering with earth and ww2 , they all are buzz-driven without solid quality as foundation. Nezha at least was something great.
  18. i always hate the idea of shortlisting the film in these categories. This will just further kill and at least filter the suspense during nomination morning. If they really need a shortlist, they can just keep the list to themselves ( member in each branch). Oscar's nomination announcement has become less and less suspenseful in the past few years, it feel more like a reiteration of what other bodies think. In 80s and 90s , BAFTA nomination list had so little similarities with Oscar but now BAFTA have become a primary sources of predicting the race. Even the choices from Cannes and Venice have started to converge with Oscar
  19. As much as Close was snubbed in 2019 oscar , olivia performance did deserve the win. If they want to give a consolation prize to Close, she has to be at least better or on par with her competitors, regardless if her performance in Hillbilly elegy is her career worst.
  20. Mank suddenly pick up some momentum after this. But david fincher's film tend to underperform at Oscar....
  21. Minari almost got left out entirely. Worse than the farewell last year
  22. I am not sure if Parasite would still have that historical Oscar win if without those box office numbers and press events.
  23. I hardly see any new movies this year.....I have never seen this little number of movies in a year since 2009 despite staying at home at the record-breaking hour. hope this doesn't become a habit 2021 onaward.
  24. I can say that for 2009 (District 9 and The blind side) but 2010 nominees look very much the same as the rest of the decade. I prefer the 5-10 flexible number of nominees. By forcing the voters to come out 10 BP nominees , the final list will end up pretty much identical to those GG/PGA/NBR top 10 lists with minimal suspense on the Oscar nomination day. The 5% threshold method is making perfect sense too. In the nomination process, the nominees have to fight for passionate number 1 votes while the final BP winner is selected through consensus (preferential ranking). It is balance of voting process.
