I absolutely agree. 2017 was certainly worse, but 2018 certainly doesn't feel like an improvement. I really do feel like Isle of Dogs might trot on through to a win on the basis that it's not a sequel, that it's not based on a licensed property (sorry Spider-Man), and that the Academy certainly has a love for Anderson's films.

Yet another foreign language candidate has caught my attention: the Brazilian Annecy selection Tito and the Birds, which was also selected for the Toronto International Film Festival. The film was picked up by distributor Shout! Factory, the same one behind In This Corner of the World and Big Fish & Begonia. The plot, while being a simple one that kids could easily follow, is a little hard for me to put into words, so I'll let the trailer speak for itself. If Shout! Factory plays their cards right, this could be the next Brazilian animation to receive a nomination after The Boy and the World. Maybe. I dunno.

You know what? You're onto something. When we get used to seeing an actor or an actress, we see that performer even when they're trying to blend into a character. This is more true for some performers and less true for others, but it's true for all of them to an extent. And Rami Malek is an extremely 'seeable' actor to me. It won't affect his fame, but it'll hold him back from the ballots of voters who would rather reward what they view to be 'transformative' work. So we need to see how Rami Malek is able to embody Freddie Mercury despite his memorable appearance before we can nail him down as a surefire nomination, because this year is, in my opinion, the most competitive year for Best Actor nomination hopefuls in a few years now.

The reactions posted on the Boy Erased thread have me thinking that it'll be skipping Best Picture as well. It'll definitely be in the conversation for acting, though! But as far as Picture and Director go, I think Focus Features is in the clear to put everything they've got behind BlacKkKlansman. Come on, Focus. Don't let what happened to Do The Right Thing happen to this one.

Looks like Kidman is a frontrunner after all. Good on Annapurna for having a keen eye for projects.

These criticisms sound fair. I think I'm still interested in the film despite what sound like understandable flaws. This is the film that'll probably fall out of the Best Picture conversation, but it should definitely still be an acting player for Hedges, Crowe, and Kidman.

Empathy. It's what I believe to be the key to being effective as an artist in any medium, and it's what's making me excited for this film. No film should outright glamorize depraved lifestyles, and I'm glad to know that this one isn't willing to do that either. This one just earned a place on my radar.

I'm rooting for this one to do as well as it can. I want MGM's resurgence to be successful, and a solid performance here would provide confidence for the future. In the context of a 6-Day OW that includes Wed. and Thurs., I think this gross seems pretty solid.

I think Sade is a really good music artist so this is pretty exciting in my opinion!

Just as I thought. This could've been a very fun choice for families with kids if it hadn't chosen to embrace depravity. This could've been a new-age Who Framed Roger Rabbit?.

I think it'll be really telling to see how this performs at the box office, especially after The Meg. Is it that people actually want that type B-movie Hollywood action film? It's historically been a good source of income with the right production values. Maybe that audience will carry over. Or, maybe not. I personally think this'll be a disappointment.

I'm seeing this in theaters anyway, as it has the director of two of my favorite films of the 2010s so far, as well as one of my favorite actors - Ryan Gosling. Hardcore right wingers need to learn to chill just as much as hardcore left wingers do.; a character study of an American is pretty American in and of itself if you ask me.

I think Searching could pull a Wind River gross tbh.

Get Out and The Grand Budapest Hotel were February releases if that's close enough... Many nominees have debuted at Sundance if that counts.

I can't wait to simply see what's nominated - that's the most exciting part for me. We might witness one of the strongest Best Picture lineups in Oscar history! It'd be an honor for a great film to stand beside films we know to be of outstanding quality such as The Favourite and Roma. The slate used to confuse me, but now it excites me!

So she'll probably be playing Wednesday Addams. That's probably not a bad casting decision.

Personally, I hope it's more evenly distributed next time. The studios should try to have a more even distribution: a fair amount at Venice, a fair amount at Telluride, and a fair amount at Toronto. It'd be more exciting and it'd be harder for films to get lost in the shuffle.

This is going to be a very important film. Think-pieces will express how the film depicts a time in America's past, when a shameful action, or even the mere accusation of a shameful action, was a permanent death-knell in a politician's campaign -- that is a sentiment we need to uphold again as Americans. I really like Jason Reitman (though I've only seen Juno out of his directorial resume), and I'm going to be looking forward to this in the Autumn season.

November is even more crowded now... I wonder how this'll be able to perform. Aviron is an up-and-comer of a distributor and it'll be interesting to see how this film fits into thebox office as well as the Oscar race.

I don't think my weekend score is the best score I've had, but it's okay-ish, especially for this weekend. I knew Crazy Rich Asians was going to hold well, but I didn't think it'd hold that well.
