  1. I don't think the decisions on which films are made can be entirely known to common folk in this day and age. By reading a website article, I caught a glimpse of a producer chat room for the movie Pixels, and they were excited, not for the video game references and things like that, but for the underlying context of the film and the relationships between certain characters - things that the filmmakers completely fumbled on. I'm sure producers aren't completely idiotic. But the fact still stands that, for some reason, the only projects that seem to be getting through the door are retreads. But I'm hoping to be different from the filmmakers that accept it.
  2. I'm not really sure, but I know that Hollywood isn't wanting to take many storytelling risks... that's for sure. I don't believe that an oligarchy decides the slate. However, I do believe that it's young, careless marketing teams that are appealing to the clueless producers.
  3. Slenderman was my worst by far! I thought the teenage crowd would've supported it a little more than they did for sure!
  4. Alex Kendrick, a prominent faith-based film director, has had his next film, Overcomer, dated for August 23rd, 2018. Here is the IMDb synopsis: "This movie will unpack a pivotal issue in the life of students and adults alike." Kendrick's films are well known amongst the community. If any one faith-based film will become a success in 2019, it's likely this one.
  5. I always believed this film could be a good one. There's no harm in traditional storytelling, not at all! Hopefully, the film is able to draw in audiences!
  6. In the movie directed by Hans Petter Moland, Neeson plays Nels Coxman, a local snowplow operator recently named Citizen of the Year of his small Colorado ski town for keeping the roads open through the winter. Nels’ quiet life with his wife (Laura Dern) abruptly spins out of control when their son is unjustly murdered by a local drug cartel. Taking the law into his own hands with only the tools of an outdoorsman and snowplow driver, Nels sets out to find those responsible but inadvertently ignites a gang war that threatens to engulf the town- unless he ends it first. - from the Deadline source
  7. https://io9.gizmodo.com/dune-is-getting-a-tabletop-rpg-just-in-time-for-denis-1828355349#repliesamp-bA2CM98pQtRM5eM6PaRnmS9T3D8ZPXukBVsKyfrX9ODlqf1Ip7HJA-H-NubvwCa5 According to this article, Legendary Entertainment has teamed up with a prominent board game company to make a tabletop RPG based on Dune. I personally view any tie-in as a sign of faith and hope in the project, and this tie-in is one that would directly appeal to many people.
  8. Black Klansman August 14th, 7:50 pm, 20% full AMC Wilmington 16 Trailers: Nobody's Fool Night School (laughs) The Hate U Give White Boy Rick A Star is Born The Little Stranger (gasps) Reactions throughout. Dead silence at the ending.
  9. This looks to combine traditional suspense storytelling with 21st century weirdness in a brilliant way. There's definitely a reason why Drew Goddard has cemented place in Hollywood for himself. I'm optimistic about this one.
  10. Well, that's pretty exciting. Hopefully it gets to the point where the camera starts rolling.
  11. I consider myself a 'conservative' anime fan, and the reason is because of all of the fanservice that has permeated the industry. I only watch anime shows that are focused on telling a legitimate story and conveying deep themes, to be honest; in other words, no hentai for me. I do think that you're onto something, though: in anime, it's a flat, 2D plane; in Game of Thrones, the visceral imagery is real. And that's HBO for you. HBO's gonna HBO. So yeah, I'm not gonna be watching either anytime soon, and that's because I share your personal taste, in that such content is repulsive to watch.
  12. I know that the Coen Brothers wrote The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, but I do think there are two major things against it; number one is that the movie is an anthology film according to the description found on the film's Google page. The second is that Netflix can't get everything they aim for, and if they can, it's unproven. So I think the film will ultimately fail to have a chance at Original Screenplay; because even when it doesn't seem like there's much competition, there still is valid competition hiding where you least expect it.
  13. I put $22M for The Meg, and $8M for Slenderman. (I'm happy that these films are able to do well, though.)
  14. 1. Alpha 2. Mile 22 3. Searching 4. Kin 5. Operation Finale 6. God Bless The Broken Road 7. The Predator 8. Unbroken: Path To Redemption 9. Life Itself 10. Papillon
  15. @That One Guy It was a pleasure to play the game with you man! We'll carry the torch for you!
  16. Well, I'll make the most of the situation and predict which films get this nomination: Black Panther Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Mary Poppins Returns Mission: Impossible - Fallout A Quiet Place
  17. I think Philomena, Lion, and Darkest Hour are all great films in their own right... they all have their moments, that's for sure!
  18. I am appalled, both as a student and as an enthusiast of film. I am frightened - frightened - that this will give big studios, the makers of so-called 'popular films', more incentive to be even more derivative in terms of which films they choose to make. Furthermore, depending on the nominees, filmmakers might be discouraged from making their films the best they can be, and quality might go down the drain - some people may be thinking this way, even if it's the wrong way to think: "If I can't get Best Picture, why bother, right? Let's just shoot for the lowest common denominator so that no one is angry or mad at my film, so that I can slap together a mediocre yet fiancially-secure product and call it a day, complete with a void of unfulfillment in my heart." You know. More of the same, except worse. So Academy. You started this, and you need to best of it. Therefore, you should be as smart as possible in regards to what is nominated. You know full well that Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Deadpool 2, and Solo: A Star Wars Story would be unacceptable nomination in the regular Best Picture category; therefore, they should remain unacceptable for this. In return, nominees must consist of deserving box office hits such as A Quiet Place and Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Either that, or the category will inflict severe damage to the psyche of general audience members.
