  1. Warner Bros must be confident in this one. I think a sizeable portion of the American Sniper audience will want to see this one for sure.
  2. They probably want to try and give the film a Hostiles type of run, albiet without the potential for any Oscars. I'm okay with this, because that's a nice little spot for limited prestige films to have their own wide release; this film's exit leaves Halloween and The Hate U Give's expansion by themselves. Besides that, I wanna say that I find one moment in the trailer really funny: "It's kind of a big day tomorrow." "I KNOW ALL ABOUT YOUR BIG DAY"
  3. Well, Coogler was some big shoes to fill, so I doubt Steven Caple Jr. would've gotten the job if his directing wasn't up to snuff. I'm rooting for this to succeed for everyone involved.
  4. The theaters were probably also getting complaints about the films' explosions being heard inside the theaters next door, too...
  5. Yeah. They might as well push it into a wider release as soon as possible; many Oscar candidates are going to be nipping at its heels if they wait too long.
  6. I think it's significant to say: I've had NBC on tonight, and a commercial for Beautiful Boy played at least twice; once during The Voice, and once during This Is Us. It seems as if Amazon knows that the audience for the sentimental shows that are popular on NBC would be interested in a film like Beautiful Boy, and that the distributor was able to act on the relationship with Dan Fogelman established by Life Itself to secure the TV spot's inclusion. This is something I caught that certainly can't hurt box office potential. It may also be a sign that Amazon could be planning to expand the film's release over time.

  9. Huh. I really liked the original, so I'll be eager to see how this will compare to that masterwork. I'm sure it'll be hard to top that!
  10. Well, it's been a pleasure to have you with us! I wish you the best in life, wherever you choose to go! God bless you!
  11. At the very least, Lionsgate has John Wick 3 at the ready for next year. Plus, there's Hellboy, Liam Neeson's snowplow action thriller, Chaos Walking, another Madea film, a Seth Rogen comedy, and Roland Emmerich's Midway film. That sounds like a potentially better year to me, at least.
  12. So I've just now become aware of what may just become an anomaly in this race. And it is a Netflix film called Next Gen. The film was made by a Chinese production company with the animation tool Blender, and it was purchased by Netflix at the Cannes Film Festival for $30 million dollars. The synopsis: in a futuristic society, one girl, who at first dislikes robots, meets and befriends a robot who protects her through dangerous times. The common consensus is that the film is overcomplicated but otherwise good. As the film came out of nowhere, Rotten Tomatoes only has four reviews compiled, three of which are fresh. I have not seen the film at this time, but it just might be something to look out for; if this gets nominated, it could cause ripple effects in the animation landscape for a long time. Edit: I guess you need a theatrical release to be eligible, huh? Maybe next time, Netflix.

  14. So according to the thread title, The House With A Clock in its Walls is about to have a better OW than The Predator did. I think I'm happy about that. Eli Roth has done something nice for the kids.
  15. https://www.cartoonbrew.com/feature-film/animation-is-film-announces-11-animated-features-in-competition-lineup-164312.html Fascinatingly, GKIDS is producing their second annual film festival, Animation Is Film (or AIF for short), in Hollywood's Chinese Theater. The eleven films in the main competition are: Another Day in the Life (Poland/Spain) Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles (Spain) Funan (Belgium/France/Cambodia)* I Want To Eat Your Pancreas (Japan) Mirai (Japan)* Okko's Inn (Japan)* Pachamama (Argentina/France) Penguin Highway (Japan) Ruben Brandt, Collector (Hungary) Seder-Masochism (USA)* Tito and the Birds (Brazil)* * = It's no surprise because Annecy Int'l is also a part of this festival, but the asterisk states that the film was also in competition over ar Annecy. (Descriptions of the films, as well as a list of the festival competition's jury members, are available in the provides link.) **** Sidenote: I took a look at each of these films, and one that caught my eye was Ruben Brandt, Collector. It is about a thief who steals paintings from museums, not for the money, but for his sanity. Each character is made to look like a figure that would be seen in a Picasso image, and action -- yes, action -- is prioritized. I think there is a reason why Sony Pictures Classics (The Triplets of Belleville, Paprika, Persepolis) bought it, even if they did it quietly; this film could come out of nowhere. I'm posting the trailer below:
  16. 1. A Star Is Born 2. First Man 3. Bad Times at the El Royale 4. Halloween 5. Serenity 6. Beautiful Boy 7. Can You Ever Forgive Me? 8. Indivisible 9. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald 10. Widows
  17. I also have a question to ask you, @chasmmi. There's two animated films from this year, 2018, that I am wanting to put on my list. Would you be okay with me and other voters putting films from this year on our list? Or is it too early?
  18. There's a film I just watched with Amazon Prime Video. It's from 1982, so you can tell it's got some age on it, but if you can, I wholeheartedly believe that it is at least worth a look. Beautifully animated, marvelously voice-acted, and presented with an exceptional directorial effort, The Last Unicorn is a hidden gem that is deserving of attention. The film is at once a fairy tale and a fantasy epic, and the film is not afraid to ask intriguing questions. It is also fascinating as a product of its early-80s time period. It is a film that I will certainly be putting on my list.
  19. Titanic v. Rogue One The Dark Knight v. The Exorcist
  20. Counter argument: My family and I also fall into that Republican-voting category as a middle class family in a fairly populated city. But I want to say that, if we fall into that category, and if we want to vote Republican because of that, then we need to take up responsibility by doing two things: 1) Volunteer Service -- in other words, serving people who are in need without being told to do it by authority figures. 2) Encouraging others to help themselves initiate their own financial betterment. "Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he'll eat for a lifetime." My current situation with Hurricane Florence provides a good allegory for my viewpoint. My father owns a kitchen for his business, and he was given the opportunity to host a non-profit organization that cooked meals for people in shelters, people like policemen and firefighters, and power line technicians. Thanks to my conservative father's selfless choice to lend his kitchen to the volunteer organization, 10,000 people have been fed every day for a week. That includes the people in shelters who were in need, and the people keeping the city safe, who needed food in order to keep themselves able to do their work. I've been able to help with dishes during this time as the one who organizes all the pots and pans and utensils for the kitchen workers. And I've seen that my efforts were helping to facilitate their ability to work efficiently. That's what's important -- to help others, so that they can help themselves. You probably agree with everything I'm saying in this rant already, but my main point is this: you've been blessed with priviledge in your life, and that's definitely okay. But I personally believe that people like us need to regard our priviledge as a gift, thus harnessing it to improve the livelihoods of the fellow Americans around us. And that's not gonna be accomplished by a mere vote; that's accomplished by going into the landscape that's been ravaged by the (in this instance, metaphorical) Apocalypse, and helping others to get through it themselves, no matter the personal sacrifices.
