  1. Keaton is the only one who deserved to win anything for Birdman. And he wasn't even all that amazing himself. (In an ideal world Timothy Spall would have dominated the Best Actor race that year).
  2. Inarritu just poisoned everything in Birdman including Stone's performance. She's so much better in this.

  4. He has survived Birdman AND The Revenant dominating two awards seasons in a row. He'll be OK. And oh wow it took me a minute to realize where that gif is from. If I'd seen that in the theater... yikes.
  5. Well, uh, this is a great, very entertaining little movie and if you haven't seen it yet you really should.
  6. Gyllenhaal had a showier part in Nightcrawler and that also gave him a BAFTA nod but nothing at the Oscars. And man oh man Huppert better not get a snub after how far she's managed to go this season.
  7. My favorite character detail in this is that Rachel House's character really wants to see herself as the action hero of the story because it's a temporary escape from her boring life, it's exactly the same deal as with Ricky and his "this was just like The Lord of the Rings" moment (and btw when he sees the teenage girl on the horse it's such a perfect affectionate parody of Arwen) and being overjoyed when he gets to be a part of a car chase. But as many laughs as the movie gets out of this, it doesn't turn her into a walking joke - when everything's over and her deputy flat-out states something to the effect of "this isn't a movie anymore", she has that disappointed, sad look on her face that's legitimately affecting.
  8. I thought Robert Eggers could at least score here. Too bad he didn't. Happy for Trachtenberg though.
  9. No matter how much La La Land expands I can't see it doing more than 15m over the 3-day and Hidden Figures should beat that pretty easily. Especially since it'll be adding a few hundred theaters too.
  10. On a much, much, much smaller scale I've had to make a living doing something I was good at but didn't much enjoy, so I could sympathize. And it's not like he's constantly in some woe-is-me state or something.
  11. Well that was uh pretty damn good. Never more enjoyable than in its first hour, but never more interesting than in its second, when it gets more and more self-reflexive and self-referential and has a more and more active dialogue with itself. It's a film fundamentally built on contrast - between the reality and fantasy of relationships, the reality and fantasy of Hollywood, success and failure, the artificially created "movie magic" and the very real effect it has on people... with everyone involved here deliberately using mundane reality as fodder for their own moments of movie magic, only to have that reality undercut everything again. Yet the movie retains its own kind of magic through all of it.
  12. Persona is good and all, but imagine how much better it would be if it starred JLaw and Anna Kendrick
  13. 120+ will happen I'm sure, 150 is possible but still so far away at this point that I don't wanna get my hopes up too much.
