  1. I'd go full fanboy and say one of the best ever. Epic in a way we haven't really seen since then, and almost certainly won't see here. Jackson had a sense of monumental scale and spectacle and build-up back then that these random indie directors thrown into the studio machine just don't have. Not that this is attempting to be the same kind of movie but the Marvel-style jokes and the casual, almost tossed-off shots of Kong aren't really winning me over. In the best case scenario I guess it'll be a fun B-movie on an A budget.
  2. Should become Roadside's highest grossing movie (over Mud's $21.6m) before or right after the nominations.
  3. That and Paramount actually giving him a campaign worth a damn. Still would be a pretty damn long shot.
  4. 1. What will Dr Strange's total be at the end of the game? 216.800 2. What will Arrival's total be by the end of the game? 72.223 3. What will Passengers' 3 day OW be? 22.893 4. What will Underworld's Second weekend percentage drop be? 48.7% 5. What will be the difference in gross between Hacksaw and Allied by the end of the game (No need to state which is higher)? 999k 6. What will La La Land's multiplier be from it's (9th December limited) opening weekend? 33x 7. What will Moana's 12 day total be (The end of its second Sunday)? 94.512 8. How many days will Fantastic Beasts make more than $1M? 21 9. What will Sing's Opening Day including Previews be? 8.247 10. How much will Rogue One make in Thursday previews? 13.7
  5. I'm iffy on Arrival being here after seeing it. Like all of Villeneuve's features I've seen it's carried much more by the direction and the lead performance(s) than the writing.
  6. Patricia Arquette just won for 16-17 minutes, I think? It's all about the impact. If it's less than 10 mins I guess that raises the chances for the competition.
  7. 1. The Witch 2. Hell or High Water 3. Zootopia 4. The BFG 5. I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House 6. Hunt for the Wilderpeople 7. Everybody Wants Some!! 8. Indignation 9. Don't Breathe 10. Microbe and Gasoline By the end of the year only the top 2 might be left though. So much to catch up with.
  8. Whoa they got Huppert there. I'm sure I'm still gonna cringe through all of it though cause Galloway won't be able to keep himself from interrupting them every 30 seconds.
  9. Kubrick - The Shining, Barry Lyndon, Dr. Strangelove Jarmusch - Dead Man, Stranger Than Paradise, Ghost Dog Lynch - Mulholland Drive, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, Lost Highway
  10. If they want to release Nocturnal Animals wide they have to do it as soon as possible. Can't afford to wait with that PTA.

  12. If Neeson's part in Silence isn't an awards-magnet showcase this might come down to Ali vs Bridges. Really wish John Goodman would break into this race despite everything. His practically unavoidable snub is gonna look even worse considering how slim this category appears to be atm.
  13. Pretty damn impressive. The second half definitely felt like the most visceral, unflinching cinematic depiction of warfare since SPR. And it's all the more effective when juxtaposed with Doss' convictions; there's nothing contradictory about this approach, you need to see the extreme gore and brutality to understand just what he was willing to face. A whole bunch of moments were genuinely awe-inspiring. More mixed on the first half. There are some compelling moments there (Weaving's whole character, Doss feeling floored when he's casually told that he just saved somebody's life), but mostly it's rushed and corny, especially the romantic subplot. The broad-strokes approach works both for and against it. Vaughn as dramatic actor is True Detective Season 2 all over again, I wasn't buying him at first but he convinced me by the end. And Gibson deserves some kind of a special award for making BOTH Sam Worthington and Luke Bracey - the "I believe that, like me, the people behind these robberies are extreme athletes" guy! - interesting and likable.
  14. I don't expect only mind-blowing experiences, that would be idiotic. But I do ask that a movie I watch be at least accomplished in some memorable way, give me something positive to chew on after it's over. It doesn't have to be perfect, or especially complex (sometimes it's as simple as, say, freaking Ouija 2 actually having solid acting and writing and production values), but I'm not gonna consistently watch movies and embrace that the people involved do a 6/10 job on them. Sure I'm entertained by forgettable fluff every now and then, and I don't judge anyone who prefers it to more challenging movies (as long as they aren't obnoxious/snobby about it) but it shouldn't be the standard. That's no way for any medium to move forward. And today it's becoming more of a problem that these forgettable movies also tend to be the ones that have the biggest amount of money spent on them and are the most aggressively pushed.
