  1. This doesn’t strike me as a bad Best Picture lineup. The choices make sense to me.
  2. The Jurassic World movies are dumb, but it’s not like this franchise had high standards before that. Even the first film dumbed down the message of the original novel. People go to see these because dinosaurs are cool. That’s all there is to it.
  3. Problem is that they’ll be taking a big risk by having two concurrent Batman film series going side by side, and that’s not counting the Todd Phillips Joker movies. This is precisely the kind of thing that led to WB canceling that George Miller Justice League movie back in the day. They’re essentially competing with themselves. They’ll need to tread very carefully.
  4. Since I’m a big fan of discussing what-if scenarios, does anyone suppose the DCU would’ve been better off if the Matt Reeves Batman was the starting point for it, and that everything before it was wiped completely clean, including TSS and Peacemaker? I’m not necessarily saying I would’ve wanted it to be that way. I’ve said before that I’d rather they not bother with a new DCU at this stage, but would such an approach have been the ideal scenario?
  5. Speaking of LotR, I remember Villeneuve saying that he was actually relieved in hindsight that he didn’t film the Dune movies back to back, because he needed time to cool off after how exhausting the initial shoot was. I guess Peter Jackson is built different.
  6. This being a success wouldn’t be likely to change the narrative all that much.
  7. Are we going to get a repeat of the media hysteria surrounding Joker?
  8. If that’s what they’re going for, then it’d be a little word to go from World to City.
  9. Imagine going back to when first trailer for the 2014 Godzilla came out and telling people that this franchise would eventually become the kaiju equivalent of a WWE romp.
  10. Isn’t Legendary providing 75% or so of the finances for these movies, at least in terms of the production budgets?
  11. Part Two hadn’t even begun filming by the time Part One was released. They made sure to wait and see how the first one would do before moving forward with the sequel. It wasn’t exactly a Lord of the Rings situation, where the entire trilogy was filmed at once.
  12. I think Emma Stone’s general popularity and the fact that it was released in December played a big part in Poor Things doing unusually well compared to most other “artsy” films nowadays. The Fabelmans also came out when COVID fears were still present to a degree, so people were less likely to go to the theater to watch a slow paced Oscar bait film.
  13. The theater was packed when I saw this in an RPX screening yesterday. Lots of young people were there too.
  14. Yeah. I just wanted to make sure my memory wasn’t failing me. Chani in general is a very different character from what I remember from the book.
  15. I just got back from seeing this in a packed house, and pretty much the entire audience applauded by the time the credits rolled. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that before. There were kids and teens in the audience too, and I heard a few of them gasp at certain parts. It was an interesting experience. I saw it in RPX, by the way.
  16. They chickened out with Alia. That was disappointing. I was hoping for a creepy CGI toddler. There was a lot of stuff here that I don’t recall in the book, although I only read through it once, so there’s that. I certainly don’t remember Chani being angry at Paul in the book.
