  1. In the comedy realm, this is simply one of the best and as far as comedies go.......it's a masterpiece. The characters are unique, the story is complex, and it's without a doubt one of the more hilarious films you'll see. Jeff Bridges is brilliant. The amount of things Bridges is able to portray by nothing other than body language had me losing it. Does it get any better than when he reclines the chair and gets in laid back mode while being questioned by the cops in front of him? I'm having trouble writing this review, because there's so many awesome things in the movie I want to discuss. But instead of rambling on more, I'll just say...................watch it and embrace the comedic brilliance of The Big Lebowski. Films like this don't come around very often. A
  2. I'd say it's not among the top 3 and best of what Tarantino has to offer, but when it comes down to it............this is still vintage Tarantino. You have the Tarantino trademarks of larger than life setting and characters, distinct style, and of course the always dependable score. I thought Foxx did enough, but in large part the film belonged to the trio of Waltz, SLJ, and DiCaprio. There are some uneven parts in the film uncharacteristic of Tarantino, but in large part those are saved by the high points. All in all, I found it to be a must-see for all Tarantino fans despite not being among the best he has to offer. Will wait a couple days on grade like all Tarantino films, but will definitely fall somewhere in the Top 5-10 for the year.
  3. I'm not on the 2012 bandwagon just yet, but mainly because I still need to catch up on some.I thought 2011 was really weak, but Tree of Life was so damn good it saved the year and nothing else really mattered.
  4. I will be seeing this tomorrow, and I can't fucking wait.I feel like 2012 has been somewhat disappointing to me thus far quality-wise (mainly as a result of still waiting on many top films from the year), and Tarantino never disappoints me. I view Tarantino films as more of a cinematic events that only happen every few years........a time where I become fully immersed into a different world and style of cinema that has been often imitated, but it's quite simple.......nobody does cinema like Tarantino does cinema. Will be back tomorrow with a review.
  5. Not only one of the best crime dramas, this is also simply one of my favorite films. You really can't go wrong with De Niro, Pacino, and Kilmer all at the top of their game, and a talented director behind the camera. But perhaps what I like most about the film is how it almost behaves like a character study through long stretches of the running time. One of the few films deserving of the following grade: A
  6. Hell yes, the 3D re-release nonsense is failing miserably...........nice to see 3D in general going through the inevitable slow and painful demise.

  9. This sounds like it could be used as a review for The Avengers, and you gave that a 9.5/10.

  11. I'm not really sure this is the kind of film that needs a grade, but there's very little doubt it's an absolute juggernaut.I kind of wish more attention had been paid to Fassbender and not his sister, but I understand her purpose. This is haunting stuff.......the subway scene at the beginning is one of the more powerful scenes I've ever seen on film. It's something to be experienced....but not sure if there's really a need to see it again, as adim stated.
  12. It does nothing to further the story, and it's not even close to qualifying as what one would call good dialogue. It's simply an example of bloating up an already over-bloated film. And hell, I liked the film for the most part.
  13. Here's the thing..........when it works, it really works. The eagles are majestic, the Gollum scene is effective, and pretty much everything after the Rivendell is pretty damn good. Unfortunately, the first hour is almost parody-like in terms of how many useless scenes are put in the film. It's one thing if characters are developed during this time, but instead you have a bunch of no-name dwarves just hanging out in Bilbo's house for a good half hour. Someone needs to tell Jackson that film quality is not determined by running time..........that first half hour nearly derailed the whole film. Luckily, I thought it had a really enjoyable second half, and pretty great ending overall. It's not LOTR-quality, but I still feel it's an above average adventure film with some great scenes. B
  14. This was pretty bad. There was some talent shown by Jolie I suppose, but in the end the bad outweighs the good. One of those films that gets progressively worse as it goes on.... C-
  15. The problem with a lukewarm reception for The Hobbit is the main criticism comes from the dividing into three separate films. Main criticism seems to be pacing issues and lagging time..........which is directly as a result of trying to stretch this out as much as humanly possible. The Hobbit really needed to be a badass film...........the kind of event that made people want two more films. I think this initial reception is only going to hamper the last two films as well. It's quite obvious when only the LOTR loonies are trying to salvage any hope or grace at this point.
  16. This.........on basically all accounts. Particularly agree with Knightley, that was an absolutely awful performance, and made the beginning of the film hard to sit through. C+/C
  17. Really good stuff.Obviously the film is a visual delight, but the emotional aspect is really being underplayed, IMO. And I'm usually not one to do this but.....those who have a problem with the ending simply missed the whole point of the film. The whole story comes together with the ending, as do the themes of faith and religion. Kudos also to the score, one of the better ones I've heard this year.........and one of the best films of the year.B+

  19. Anyone else feel that Disney's acquisition of Pixar is resulting in lower quality when compared to previous Pixar films? It's clear Disney is already pushing for more sequels, and unfortunately a lot of the Pixar brains have bolted, or are involved in a lot less capacity than before. While still a good bet for putting out good films, it's a bit sad to say that the Pixar name isn't what it used to be.......for me, at least.
  20. Are you kidding me? I was messing around, as I said to Shpongle in the reply. My post being deleted is an example of a mod power trip. at the absolute least. Embarrassing.
  21. Yeah, I'm mainly just messing around.I've come up with a system in regards to my movie-going and the RT score. It's as follows:I've really anticipating it: Has to be below 20% for me to be dissuaded, and even then I'll add it on NetflixI'm wanting to see it: Will for sure if above 80; if reviews are 30-50%, will do a case-by-case basis and see how I feel at the time.I'm indifferent: Has to be at least a 70%Don't want to see it: At least 90%
  22. I know there were a lot of special effects going on as well, but I really hope it didn't take Cameron 12 years to write "Dances with Wolves: Journey to the Na'vi."
  23. I generally don't care about BO except that I hope good films make good money, leading to more good films. As for critic reviews, I look at them out of interest, but generally don't really care what other people think. My view and personal thoughts of the movies are always more important than BO/critical reception to me.

  25. In a situation such as this, it is quite clear only one can be right.Yield to your elders, IMO.
