Boxoffice.com's Top 100 Films of All Time 2013: THE RESULTS (final list in OP)

Recommended Posts

my point is that the big box office films, whether of today or yesteryear (lol, i have to use that word) are largely fit for entertainment and not much else. while i'll always defend casablanca over transformers i'm not going to pretend that the purposes of the two are really much different. neither are deep or meaningful and exist merely to delight. that isn't a bad thing, but i think the pretension that old audiences were more thoughtful or audacious in their choices is absurd.

now i'd also argue that in order for a movie to truly be a masterpiece it has to be something more than just entertainment, but that's a different thing entirely.

Pretty much this.

But I do think movies are kinda worse today - just like music and literature - and that's because this type of entertainment is more accessible to the masses. So, in order to achieve a broader audience, studios will try to hit all 4 quadrants, investing too much in visual appeal and not risking an overcomplex storyline which would scare people away. When you try to be the movie the everyone likes (and I really mean everyone, not only movie fans), you just end up falling in the "not great, but people will be entertained" category. This is not new, it's just more common, and doesn't mean we don't have masterpieces anymore, but I guess it means the amount of garbage is bigger.

Are RomCom (we do have half a dozen of these generic couple stuff every year, don't we?) producers trying to create a masterpiece? They aren't, most of them just want to make money.

Is the RomCom audience going to the movies to watch a masterpiece? They aren't, most of them just want 90 minutes of fun jokes beside their partners.

Seeing Trainspotting so far down the list makes me sad...

One of the worst "brilliant" films I've ever seen... when Anchorman, Dumbo, All the President's Men, The Graduate, The Goonies, Young Frankenstein, The Muppet Movie, Airplane!, My Neighbor Totoro, When Harry Met Sally, Breakfast Club, etc aren't on the list, it makes me mad that a movie about a bunch of Scottish heroin junkies even got in the top 150 let alone top 100  :D

Slumdog Millionaire would have been a better Danny Boyle film to put on here IMO

To each his own I guess,  I also find it very hard to compare movies of different genres...I.E. Anchorman and Trainspotting.

I just thought there should have been another comedy on the list and Anchorman would have fit the bill. I'm just not a fan of Trainspotting and I can think of worse films that could have made the top 100
