Weekend Estimates: Riddick - 18.6M | The Butler - 8.9M | We're the Millers - 7.9M

Ridick was pretty much a passion project for Diesel. Universal probably greenlit Riddick so long as Diesel agreed to do like three more Fast and Furious movies, so it will be worth it for them in the end. :P

It's worth noting, Universal didn't greenlight Riddick...they didn't pay for it. Riddick is an independently financed production by Diesels production company (Diesel got the rights as payment for his cameo in Toyko Drift)...Universal did buy the domestic distribution rights though. But for another film to come about...that'd be on Diesel and company to find financing. universal in theory could greenlight and finance it, but it's hardly the only option. Now I'm sure the success of Fast and Furious convinced others to finance the film and also Universal to take on domestic distribution though.Lets see how this does internationally...if it can do 45m domestic, and another 100m international I could see them doing another. I don't see it doing quite as well international as the last Resident Evil though. Edited by kowhite

I'm sure Universal would solely greenlit another Riddick if this one does well in the same way that Kick Ass was independently financed and then distributed by Lionsgate and Universal but Universal fully financed the second flm. Riddick been distributed at least in Canada and the UK by EOne who also distributed 2 Guns in those two countries while Universal had US distribution,Its not unusual for a film to have various distributors especially if its by a smaller studio, even Lionsgate sold The Hunger Games to various local distributors which in turned helped to recoup some of the cost of the film but it meant they only got money from domestic side and the UK but luckily the film was a huge hit.

Universal has been known to pick up other comapnies mild hit sequels...Kick Ass like you noted, and Hellboy.Granted neither of those examples really panned out as big hits, but I appreciate them doing it. Whether they'll be keen on this though, will come down to international. This is mirroring Resident Evil stateside...they can only hope it does so internationally than yeah, i could see that happening.

Well again this should be better then last September (even if that was oddly enough the 2nd biggest September ever, already went through that on the last page though)

Still waiting for something decent to come out though :P

It blows my mind there are movies that are top ten of the year...and still won't ever make a profit.Poor Oz.

It made 234 million in the U.S. , which is a lot more than what some people were predicting.

Also you really don't work for Disney, so you have no idea how much Disney lost or gained on OZ.

But I already argued with you about this before.

Universal had overseas rights to the first so it wasn't a huge surprise. They're doing Dumb and Dumber 2 so clearly the tradition continues.

With films like Riddick, I'm guessing Universal only needs to recoup what they paid for the distribution rights so if it makes $70-80m then Universal will be more than happy as will the distributors who bought the local rights to the film.

And with City of Bones-I keep on thinking its either about a dog or a pirate :lol:Of course it be a better, more amusing and just do better if it was any of those ;)

Well, if they made a porno version, they wouldn't even have to change the name...
