baumer
Why would it only do 35 million? That seems way too low. If it's a true oscar contender it will do well over 60 mill,. The Artist is the worst best picture nominee ever imo and it still 44 mill. Slave will soar past 35 with a best picture nominee and if it wins it could do 70 mill.

Jake Gittes
Assuming 12YAS gets a legit wide release next weekend, it might do $35m by the time the Oscar noms are announced, and who knows how much more after that. $60-80 million total is definitely possible for it. zackzack
It lost IMAX so expected drop. With Thor 2 and CF coming I don't see 300M happening but it should still be able to finish around 275M which is crazy impressive for it. With this weekend gross, it may not even go that far : $260M Slightly below MU
cookie
No, preselling to foreign distributors means you're selling the rights to distribute in that territory, in exchange for a greater percentage of the gross given to that distributor. It's a way of hedging your bets: you get money up front, the distributor gets a good chunk (or even all) of the gross for that territory. New Line famously paid for almost all the production budget of LOTR with FOTR pre-sales. edit: here's the Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_finance#Pre-sales On the flip side the studio will see little or none of the profit after selling the rights, so a big OS gross would mean squat (see The Golden Compass). Crusader
What you guys don't mention from all this is that once the studio sells the rights to a movie OS they don't get the usual 40-45 % of the gross They get little to no money from its OS performance since the distributor ( rightfully - since they paid for it ) have the rights to the movie in their respective territories Sometimes this bites em in their asses since a movie does much better OS than DOM

They sold the international rights for 175 mill. That's a pretty good gamble.

Dementeleus
It's the gamble they take though. They go for the sure thing instead of risk. Smart imo. With EG, they needed the pre-sales to cover the budget before they even went into production. They pre-sold with star names and a sizzle reel. If they hadn't, there wouldn't be a film.
Gopher
Great drop. But I never though losing Imax would be a problem. Losing 3d is what will hurt it. It's not losing 3D. Most theaters can still give Gravity a 3D screen after Thor opens. Competition is the issue.
