Also, I feel like with a visual feast like TWOW, the long runtime could even be an advantage. Like, who doesn't like to have more time to get lost in that beautiful world? They may even get shocked when it ends since they'll be returning to the dullness of our real world.

lol i have said this myself loads of times. If i'm watching something i like, or somethign that i'm really interested in, the longer the movie the better.

Honestly i'm sick to dath of seeing poeple moan about the 3 hour runtime elsewhere, you would think its the first movie ever to be 3 hours long.

Its like they are grasping at anything 'negative' they can.

Who in gods name thinks Maverick has an awards-caliber story? It was obviously highly simple and surface deep with the drama. It's prime Bruckheimer entertainment throughout, including the pathetically irrelevant and forced romance.

The plot is contrived to make a fun scenario for flying fighter pilot jets. I kind of like that it's unapologetically dumb

This just proves movies are subjective Maverick was SUPER BASIC but well made.

Top Gun also opened low. This will open higher so the more it makes on OW less will be the legs

Typically  , but that's not how Cameron films perform. Even terminator 2. OW record and still had a 6-7x multi.

Also many blessings everyone from the most high in the name of Jesus Christ

I am honestly always puzzled by all the people calling out Avatar for the story but then going on to praise Maverick, a film which mind you I quite liked, as if its story was brilliant. If anything Maverick is a similar case as A1 and proof that spectacle and great action are still a huge draw to theaters in 2022. The plot works, but ultimately the draw is quite obviously the aerial combat scenes, which are fantastic.

Maverick was fun movie especially in IMAX, watched it 3 times there but plot was as simple as it could be.
Quite frankly I would rather believe in interstellar human expansion to another planet with blue giant human like Aliens that we cloned and are mind connecting to than I would believe Maverick surviving his super plane crash at Mach 10.2 speed lmao.

One might say that a basic story will have a better chance to appeal to more people kinda like Avatar 👀

Lol no film with a basic story makes the runs of Titanic  or Avatar. That's a fact lol. Hence why no new sws, or the comic formalic films have never had that kind of impact. Though endgame thanks to 20 plus movies was a great exception to the rule.(Endgame still though wasn't as big as Avatar i domestically and ww. Heck avatar is back to number 1 lol)

Now look at LoTr and it's grand story telling and 4 quadrant. All 3 had massive impact domestically and especially ww.

One might praise Top Gun Maverick and simultaneously call Avatar bad because of it's plot

Avatar Plot is good, just because a movie has simmilarities with another does not mean is Bad. But people praising Top Gun Maverick but not Avatar is ridiculous, Top Gun Maverick is just successfull just because a movie had to be successfull that time.

Mission Impossible Fallout is Miles better than Maverick, the halo Jump is way more impressive than simple jet fights, A lot of the people praising Top Gun Maverick just had something against Superhero Movies.

"Best Action movie of the Last Decade" , that's a Joke having Mission Impossible 6 and Mad Max Fury Road less than 10 years ago.

But if Top Gun Maverick Was that Succesfull, Mission Impossible 7 could get 2 billion with how much it raised Tom Cruise Status as a Movie Star.

They are Basic Stories, When talking about the Story we are not talking about the Script, a Script could be complex while the overall story is basic, Blockbusters a lot of times have Basic Stories, Complex Stories is more for Series.

I really hope A2 get A+ cinemascore to keep this rivalry with TGM well alive.

I think it will. I mean it has audiences saying you will forget all the movies you have seen after experiencing it. And won over even some of the worst Cameron success and Avatar Haters.

I hope it gets best picture and director as well in most of the top Film award events.🏋‍♀️💪

Plus 5x legs is already HALF the 10x legs AVATAR had. Its not like there are people on here prediciting a massive OW and 10x legs (well maybe Sheldon is he he).

Even with a big 180+mil OW, i'll be very surprised if this doesnt have at least 5x legs, which would mean a 900mil domestic take.

We know the critics like it more than the first (overall), and many of them the 'experince' is much better too, and AVATAR is all about that cinema going experience.

And it's christmas, 5x isn't exactly shocking this time of year for more backloaded movies with great WOM

Yes i know is hard to see a movie opening with 160-170M as backloaded, but still the data is suggesting this.

True but his story was a bit different..You dont see films starring a paraplegic character who jumps into blue alien and have a crazy adventure and discovering mind blowing elementsn in alien world that changes him and  then take on super greedy Corp from earths military. There's some juicy things in avatar that make you think that Maverick and comic stories.simply don't have.  So yes elements of the story  are familiar as are all these movies  but Cameron's  presentation is definitely  far different than the rest. And that is why he's the only filmmaker in history to do double world breaker 👍

Domestically, Under no circumstance,  I see AWOW go below 600m ~ as whole January is free from Competition, Ticket Prices are high and it just can't happen.

On other hand, I also can't see it top 1.088 Billion reason being - the first 3 Weeks aren't as favorable as they were for The Force Awakens or Avatar 1.  Another Thing, I have noticed that most mid December movies in past two decades have (Even Avatar) made 80%-90% of their total Gross by 1st weekend of February, which means that to go past 1.1 Billion - movie needs to follow Titanic run - that's only way, not 1st Avatar as Avatar had made 630m outta it's 749m gross within 1st weekend of Feb, i.e 84%.

Now, Taking nearly same Gross % for A:WOW after 1st Weekend of Feb, That's How I see, A:WOW go in Domestic, from Highest to Lowest:
