THE MARTIAN | Oct 2, 2015 | Will compete as a comedy at the Golden Globes

Recommended Posts

This is a good move.  Argo, Gravity, and Gone Girl all opened in the same slot and had great commercial and critical success.  Plus, are we forgetting how packed Nov. 25th was?   Creed, The Good Dinosaur, Midnight Special, Seth Rogen/Joseph Gordon-Levitt comedy and Hunger Games just 5 days before.

Yeah i really don't understand this move. Leaving it in November was fine,  they could have pushed it to Nov. 13 if they were really scared of the crowded thanksgiving date. Now its in the traditionally tougher movie business month of October competing with heaps of other films for scraps.

I can't see anything moving to September, that month is already crazy crowded itself (one of the releases from the second half, in particular Black Mass, should move up to the 11th, which only has two mid-tier titles set there). I bet something relocates to the end of October, despite facing the potential handicap of the 31st falling on a Saturday and deflating business.

They didn't want it to get hurt by the Hunger Games. They are basically throwing Frankenstein into the trash.

"

The move to October keeps the film away from the second weekend of the popular Lionsgate franchise Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 and off of the same weekend as Disney’s Good Dinosaur"

As for Frankenstein "This is the second time the film has been pushed. It was originally skedded for January. Enough said."

Not surprised. Thanksgiving is filled with the rotted corpses of films that were ignored by audiences that weren't either a Disney movie or a holiday film. This year will probably be no different.

Did you have...a bad Thanksgiving?

The Hunger Games taking up IMAX and 3D space would hurt the Martian more and doesn't Disney do well with their Thanksgiving Day debuts? I'm thinking it's a solid move by Fox. If Frankenstein is a turkey this move beats not releasing it in theaters at all.

No but I'm sure the people who made the movies released on this weekend that weren't called "Frozen" did: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2013&wknd=48&p=.htm

As well as the people behind every movie that opened on this weekend:http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2006&wknd=47&p=.htm

And probably this weekend too: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2005&wknd=47&p=.htm

And this one: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2009&wknd=48&p=.htm

Or this one: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2004&wknd=48&p=.htm

Or this one (minus Bad Santa): http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?view=&yr=2003&wknd=48&p=.htm

Or this one: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?view=&yr=2002&wknd=48&p=.htm

Not to mention last year's pair of underperformers on the weekend.

Moving it up not back is usually a good thing

When it's obvious why the move makes sense...and it coincides with a date with a film that did bank of similar focus...yeah, it's not a bad thing.

Nonetheless...this isn't doing a Gravity business.

Why are people worried about The Walk ? The Martian is a potential $400 million + WW blockbuster. The Walk will need a major Oscars push just to make $100 million. The two movies aren't even comparable.

Robert Zemeckis has only had 4 movies post BTTF below 100 million and 3 were bordering 100 mil. Edited by WrathOfHan

Most of them are either genre movies or have big name actors. JGL is not a big name actor. If the movie isn't rescheduled it will open against Bradley Cooper's Adam Jones, The Martian and London Has Fallen. The Walk is the weakest of the four in terms of box office potential.

I like JGL but he isn't a draw as of yet. Nov 25 was full. I think the unnamed Rogan movie will be the surprise overperformer that weekend.

The unnamed Seth Rogen movie now has a title (Xmas). And yeah, it'll probably do well, unless North Korea decides to go after Sony over any Seth Rogen movie that they make lol.

Oh it's definitely switching, but I don't get that JGL isn't a big name.

The Walk has for more box office potential than Adam Jones or London has Fallen. The film has massive spectacles an intriguing story.
