All of this is a sign that he's aware he's vulnerable knowing that he lost by only 32,000 votes last time (a number that's not only barely a third of the people employed at Disney World, but also doesn't even approach half the number of people who died from COVID in this state, which is his fault for his Larry Vaughn approach of downplaying the pandemic as much as possible), and that was before he had all the baggage he has now and back when a perhaps not insignificant number of his voters were still alive (dead people can't vote, ya know). And if he and all these other clowns really had a backbone, they'd return all the money they've made off of Disney through political contributions back to them, instead of hoping that the double-dipping will continue despite their now very much public feud.

deSantis is not vulnerable. He is set to win re-election by double digits. Doubt Dems will spend any money on this race in the end 

. 2018 is not comparable to 2022 as even Dems are admitting it is likely to be a red wave and that Biden is not popular right now

Yeah can we please not with the "DeSantis is never getting reelected" mantra? This reeks of 2016 all over again, and is far from the truth. America is a garbage nation with a lot of fascist fuckheads in charge and a lot of fuckwads who believe their wretched propaganda. Trump is still a beloved figure to a lot of people and DeSantis represents a new Trump for a lot of people. And frankly, in this day and age, there is no reason to be optimistic about anything these days. Just accept that reality is horrible and the worst-case scenario is, at minimum, a super likely possiblity.

I'm not discounting or denying the fact that DeSatan does stand a chance at winning again. In fact, if the election were held today, I would predict a win for him. But it is April and November is still far away (with the state primary election not for another four months), so anything could happen between now and then. Especially when not only has he become the first governor in this state to actually try and make an enemy out of arguably its #1 employer (who were here long before he was and will be here long after he's gone), but some of his closest buddies are in the midst of an ongoing child sex trafficking investigation (the real "groomers" with plenty of evidence against them that not only he has yet to denounce, but is also confirmed to have slowed the process with his delay of the release of records tied to Gaetz so he could "review" them. What is it they say about birds of a feather?) that we shouldn't rule out the not entirely out there possibility of him getting swept up into (for those not well-versed in American politics: yes, state governors can be arrested and charged with crimes). But that whole saga isn't related to the Disney/culture wars being discussed here.

You can always count on the usual suspects to pop in to tout their latest "boogeyman" phrase. What's funny is that the MAGA crowd rally around people like Trump as the ones who say "take that" to the Hollywood elites, turning a blind eye to the fact he very much was one who attended these lavish events like The Emmys not too long ago until The Apprentice became old news and he entered politics as his latest ego boost (side note: would he have gotten very far in politics if not for that brief period was he was a certified TV star and "you're fired!" was everyone's favorite catchphrase? I'm gonna go with no on that one). He sure wasn't complaining about the industry then. At the end of the day, it all comes down to everyone's bottom line (hence why nothing will come of this feud between DeSantis and Disney).

Ascribing social mores to a company is a ridiculous idea in the first place. They're motivated by money not homophobia, even if it lines up with that it's not the determining factor. You can see that by how corporations champion Pride on one hand and censor it on the other depending on the country. I always find the moral handwringing over what corporations do to be really weird.

 

Corporations are not your friend. They only care about money, and if their values happen to align with yours, all that means is that it's profitable for them. Not to say Disney funding the don't say gay bill isn't reprehensible, but I wasn't expecting any better from them.

 

The only thing shocking about this saga is how poorly Chapek has navigated through it by saying the quiet part out loud.

This whole petty vendetta is just gonna end up coming around to bite them in the ass and causing major financial issues for many families in this state. They'll find that out the hard way when it impacts their wallets (the one place you can truly hurt any business or individual). Without the immense income and job opportunities that Disney (and to a lesser extent, Universal) provides, Florida would have literally nothing to offer and reside near the bottom of any "places to visit" list (and I say that as someone who has lived in this state my whole life).

The Florida voters will get exactly the kind of government they deserve by supporting De Santis.

It is amazing that a state so dependent on tourism would make it a place people would not want to visit but that seems to be happening.

Disney is the Florida economy lol. Without Walt Disney World, why would anyone be motivated to vacation in this state? Politicians and lawmakers in Florida should be kissing their asses for the billions of dollars they bring to this state each year. It's definitely not the other way around.

 

Disney has always largely stayed out of state politics (mostly because the state's politicians have basically let them do their own thing due to said income) and the reason this all spiraled out of control is because of that Orlando Sentinel article that exposed some of the higher-ups at the company donated to the bill, followed by Chapek's botched response. And now it's launched Governor Schoolyard Bully into full-blown Disney villain mode due to being so thin-skinned. It would be hilarious if so many people in this state weren't gonna going to suffer all because a bunch of walking Florida Man memes are bound and determined to go all in on culture wars without thinking through what it's gonna mean for this entire state's economy. They'll have to find out the hard way, I suppose.
