I haven't seen it yet, but I am curious also because I know the truth. So I am curious how the movie dealt with it. I am 99% sure that the movie left out how the mafia had the goods on J Edgar, so he mostly left them alone.

The movie left out everything. It only talks about his relation with his best friend.
