This is a bullshit argument, imo. If TA2 opens to 150m it would still be one of the biggest OW of all time, but would you not also deem it disappointing?

Well, people managed to label Iron Man 2's OW as disappointing and it actually increased by nearly $30M from its predecessor. So... A Hunger Games movie decreasing $29M from THG and $35M from CF was always bound to be labelled a disappointment 'round these parts...

If Star Wars: A New Hope was a book, Liongates would have been splitting it up right when Luke goes to Mos Eisley and escapes with Ben Kenobi on The Falcon.

If Titanic was a book, Liongates would have split it right when the boat is about to hit the iceberg.

Big difference between increasing and decreasing, wouldn't matter what parts it is.

STID performed pretty well, but its overseas total (and ST09's for that matter) seems pretty low. How is it that STID with 3D made $238m while a non-franchise space movie without 3D is about to make $450m or so? Doesn't make sense. Do people just outright dislike Star Trek in a lot of markets?

The Trek franchise does horribly overseas. Always has... the JJ Treks have been the highest-grossing ones.

But why? What is keeping people from showing up? Maybe they'll start to catch on as the new franchise moves forward. This is definitely not your grandpa's dorkfest Star Trek. It's far closer to Star Wars.

And they've done correspondingly better. If they keep the same sort of style on-going, I think you'll see successively greater OS grosses as people become familiar with that as Trek.

(Unfortunately, IMO, since the franchise is in danger of becoming a more generic action-fest franchise that just happens to be set in space.)

Abrams is done right? That will hurt Trek a lot.

He's producing the next one (and presumably later ones as well). I think stylistically the new ones will be similar to his... Orci is a complete wildcard in terms of directing, of course.

More like wildshit. Or shitcard.
