Dementeleus
Lionsgate just won the domestic battle last year. Disney winning 2 out of 3 years with Marvel films isn't worse than Lionsgate winning 2 years in a row with the same franchise. Sure it is. Lionsgate is a mini-major, Disney is a mega-gargantuan studio.
keysersoze123
LG winning again is much better than Disney winning for the nth time. Plus Disney is locked win next year as well and mostly with another marvel flick. But its moot as I doubt mockingjay 1 is beating Guardians with this opening. I am sure its legs will be worse than CF.

Walt Disney
yes it is because thg is smart and good while marvel is dumb and good After so many people were wrong with their GOTG box office predictions, I would think that people would be pulling for GOTG to win the year domestically. But, I guess people are doubling down on their GOTG hatred.

But, I guess people are doubling down on their GOTG hatred. I'd just hate to see HG 3 do poorly even if GotG is imo a better film. It is not as much rooting against GotG as not rooting against another film I like.
kayumanggi
I think GOTG is overrated. DOFP was great. Interstellar was great. Cap2 was good. TF4 was ugh. Haven't seen Apes or Turtles. This year was not bad. EDGE OF TOMORROW is STILL the best I've seen this year.

kayumanggi
The sad thing is, the biggest film this year could be the lowest number one film since 2007.

keysersoze123
Jealous Marvel haters... why jealous? its not I am invested in any studio. Just IMO its ok for a smaller studio to succeed rather than Disney doing it again for gazillion time.
kayumanggi
The studio winning the year is Fox, not Lionsgate, not Disney.

Fullbuster
The most interesting fact here : 2014 was a weak year in the US despite it was the biggest recent year for the US economy at the same time! While the recession was strong and the unemployment quite high the DOM BO was strong. Does that mean people are more likely to watch a movie during a recession? Does that mean people have less time for leisure when they find a job again? Or is it because of an inadequate supply? It's the opposite of what happened in Spain : the BO strongly fell during the recession there and really suffered from it, now the BO started to recover as the economy gets better. It would be an interesting case study for sure, and an example of cultural differences leading to different results.

kayumanggi
Honestly I don't care, 2015 will be so huge we'll completely forget about this ^^ I know. It's just that this year which has had A LOT of great blockbusters hasn't been able to poduce a single 400 M movie. And by the way, it's not just 2015, it's 2015 and beyond with all those Marvel, DC and STAR WARS movies. Ha ha.

Noctis
41.3...decent. That's a higher Saturday than DH1 despite having an OD $6m lower. 125m sounds about right. We'll see how it performs on Thanksgiving. But if it's over $240m by next weekend, it'll pass GoTG.
