Kalo
22. A SEPARATION "What is wrong is wrong, no matter who said it or where it's written." A Separation is one of the greatest foreign films ever made, and easily one of the best of the decade. I've only seen it once, but it absolutely left a lasting impression on me. The acting is spectacular from the two leads (and the child actress is surprisingly great, too), and the script is fantastic. The writer(s) of A Separation are incredibly talented due to their seamless ability of dealing with the plight of three protagonists without it ever feeling over-stuffed or insincere. It's rare for any script to manage that. You'll walk away feeling hugely impressed by this courtroom drama, and hopefully have a better understanding of what life in Iran is. I only wish this film was seen by more people, as it brings out the best and most important aspect of cinema: to better understand others. 21. FROZEN "It's funny how some distance makes everything seem small. The fears that once controlled me can't get to me at all." I love Frozen. I really, really love Frozen. I would honestly rank it as one of, if not the best Disney animated film (Mulan and Tarzan are the only ones that give it strong competition). I really connected with Elsa's journey, and I know many people in the LGBT community did as well. I remember feeling stunned during Let It Go, as I was completely taken aback by how emotional it made me feel. Frozen's themes about being true to who you are, the pain of holding a lifelong secret, and the overwhelming importance of a person's individuality really hit close to home for me. And thank goodness it was familial (and not romantic) love that saved the day here. I always have a soft spot for films where a younger sister gives solace and understanding to their emotional and more complex older siblings. Let It Go is the gayest song in cinematic history, and let no one tell you otherwise. And I mean it in the best way possible. When I saw "let it go" in theaters, it was like this overwhelming weight had lifted off me and I had this empowerment come over me, I knew that this song was meant for me-and people like me. in fact I was dealling with doubts about my sexuaultioy before that. it was literally when I saw that song, when I came out to myself. it may have been overplayed a 1000k after. but I will always be thankful for that.

BK007
I connect with the message Frozen conveys, obviously, but I didn't connect with the actual film. And I also thought the movie was quite bland, characters were completely unengaging and annoying, it just felt like a generic Disney flick. You mean, like Big Hero Six? BK007
I love Let It Go too. It's message is so universal. I'm glad that it became a theme for the LGBT community, but I identify with it too. It's just so liberating.
Avatree
I think treeroy has Lisa blood flowing thru her veins. Just you wait till my list. For some choices, I've selected random cat gifs, as a subtle and vigorous study in human communications and our relationship with nature.
Avatree
You mean, like Big Hero Six? No. Not like Big Hero 6. BH6 was more emotionally engaging and more visually inventive than Frozen... and the comic relief character was actually funny.

I love when people play with set design and create new worlds, but beside that, BH6 was an empty vessel.
Avatree
I love when people play with set design and create new worlds, but beside that, BH6 was an empty vessel. I really connected to BH6's story, which is funny as I don't really care much about my brother and being LGBT Frozen's theme is much more suited to me. BH6 does suffer from unimportant supporting characters... but the relationship Hiro had with his brother and with Baymax, I thought was much better done than Anna-Elsa.

Noctis
18. THE GREAT GATSBY "Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful?" Baz Luhrmann created the best adaptation of The Great Gatsby yet, and I have a feeling it won't be topped by any future instalment. At least it won't be easy at all. The Great Gatsby is one of my favorites of 2013, and one of the most underrated in my eyes. I've always been puzzled by its mixed critical reception because I found that Baz's take on Gatsby to be surprisingly ambitious, and loyal to the book's themes. The film is visually stunning, and the music is absolutely gorgeous. Few films manage to have such a vibrant and seamless mix of visuals and music, but Baz does it here in spades. Leonardo DiCaprio is sensational, as are Maguire, Mulligan, and Clarke. The characters felt alive, and you could really feel the vibrant and growing heart of New York in the 1920s. Spectacular in every fashion. 17. THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT "Well, I need your observations like I need a dick in my ass!" The Kids Are Alright is the heartfelt and sincere look into the marriage of two women, and their two surrogate kids. The film doesn't pull its punches when it comes to showing just how outrageously difficult marriage can be, and how a couple that have been through so much together and for so long can still end up resenting each other. It's a very honest, and often hilarious film that deals with the weight of its themes with so much care that you ignore any other flaw. Julianne Moore and Annette Benning are both the driving forces of the movie, and they are incredible. Annette absolutely deserved her Oscar nomination, but I was genuinely surprised that Moore missed out on one as she was the highlight of the film. The Kids Are Alright is a very sweet, but also very dark film that knows exactly what it wants to say and how to say it. Please watch it. The porno scene is hilarious. Noctis
16. GRAVITY "You've got to learn to let go." Gravity is a fucking experience. Only a handful of films have to first be seen in a theater, and Gravity is absolutely one of them. It's an intense, thrilling, and terrifying adventure into the unknown. I will never forget the feeling of my heart racing when the first shuttle was destroyed. There was no music playing whatsoever, and all you could hear was Sandra Bullock's voice and the first impact to the shuttle. And that is exactly why it was so scary to watch. It's masterfully directed by the incredible Alfonso Cuaron, and Sandra Bullock gives a great performance. The final scene of the film made me tear up. You were on edge for the entire duration of the film, and once she finally made it home back to earth safely, it was impossible to resist how overwhelming that moment was. Absolutely incredible film. 15. COHERENCE "If we're collapsing right now, I'm gonna collapse on them. I'm not gonna wait until they collapse on us." Coherence is a film I'm sure the vast, vast majority of you have never heard about. Which is a goddamn shame. I only came across the film by accident, and when I watched it, I was floored by what I saw. You think Inception and Shutter Island were the biggest mind-fucks of the decade? Think again. I can't say more about this film because so few have seen it and I do not want to spoil anything, but it is a stunning film that will shock and intrigue you the entire way through. Please, please, please watch this little gem.
