Weekend Actual #'s | Furious 7 outperforms estimates -- $147.2m actuals!

Recommended Posts

Always fun when a movie breaks out and surprises. Just under $400M WW and that's with the bogus exchange rate I keep hearing about from OS, no? If the exchange rate was what it was this time around this year does Furious breaking the WW OW record?

On average, the exchange rate is 17.42% lower in the major territories compared to a year ago. So yeah, add in roughly 20% to that OS opening, and you add almost 50M to that weekend

Right, but that would also mean, anytime it opens OS(in this case for F7, China, Japan, etc), those grosses should be added to the WW OW as well.

No. Because China, etc didn't open in the OS OW which was this weekend.

International box office this summer could be lower-than-expected due to strength of dollar vs. foreign currencies... pic.twitter.com/2TuRnxj0qv

So, in the end, Furious 7 accomplished this amazing feat sans 3D stateside and with a poor exchange rate stripping it of nearly $50M when converted to US dollars? Truly magnificent!

Furious 7 also smashed OW records in tons and tons of markets. That helps. The opening here is almost 2M. That is insane. Other bigger markets and bigger and records OWs as well. I still can't believe today, a frikking normal work day, the movie is sold out again everywhere here. I have never seen something like this. This is all for Paul. People want to say goodbye.

It seems the definition of WW OW is not quite clear.

If you follow Disney s Avengers logic, Universal should add Russia,China and Japan FF7 OW to the number we have right now.

It is clear. Why should it add. We get day and date releases DOM and OS meaning releasing on the same weekend and then staggered releases. The way you are saying it, it would be DOM OW+2nd or 3rd+OS OW=WW OW (if 1st OS OW doesn't include every country).

The system is silly.

I think BOM is the culprit.

No. This is what we have followed since BOM opened so shouldn't be a surprise. Again the way you want it done wouldn't be a WW OW would be WW OW (2nd OS OW or 3rd OS OW).

So basically...

Avengers 1st Worldwide Weekend - 185M OS

Avengers 2nd Worldwide Weekend - 157M OS | 207M DOM

We're combining the the first OS weekend, to the 1st DOM Weekend to give us the WW OW even though it's on 2 separate weekends.

So the 1st overall weekend gross wasn't considered WW OW because it didn't have a U.S. release.

BUT the 2nd weekend's WW total gross was actually 364M.

You got this wrong.

BOM counts the OS gross from the weekend a movie first debuts in any overseas market at all, regardless of how many markets it opens in that weekend. Whatever it makes in the OS markets the movie debuts in after that weekend don't count. It's simple really:

Avengers first commercial debut overseas was the weekend before the movie came out in the U.S. In those markets it made 185m.

Then a week later it opens to 207m on the domestic front.

The OS debut weekend and the domestic debut weekend are added together for the WW opening.
