WEEKEND ESTIMATES | 05.08.15 - 05.10.15

TA is biggest ticket seller Since Avatar.

I win discussion over

Unless SW7 does something bigger.

No film will sell more tickets then TA, for the foreseeable future. It will have to be a total surprise like TA.

Just think from 2008-2012 we had three movies with 70m in ticket sales.

From the late 80s till about 1997, Arnold was one of the most consistent performers at the box office. Now it seems like he would not be able to even open a door to the dog house. He just needs to stop his solo movies.

If AOU makes 450m it will do 72.5% of what TA did. That's a pretty steep drop. If SM2 had performed in the same way it would have made only 288m! If HP2 performed similarily it would have made 230m...

The novelty of seeing all the avengers in the same film obviously played a much bigger role than anyone expected.

Before people spell doom and gloom over Marvel remember NONE of their films post-Avengers have done less than 200m, and only ONE did less than 250m. OVER half of their phase 2 films have done over 300m, including one being a new, "niche" property. Sure Avengers 2 isn't going to get close to the 600m+ phenomenon of the first but they have become a very consistent brand. Commercially they are what Pixar was last decade.

Strangely the best comparison this drop has is the Star Wars prequels. Attack of the clones retained 71.9% of TPM original gross while AOU will do about 72.5% of TA.

TPM was a phenomenon at the box office. It was only the second movie in history to gross over $400M in its first run (Unadjusted).

TA was aphenomenon at the box office and is only the third movie in history to gross over $600M in its first run (Unadjusted).
