Difference between MU and Inside Out is that nothing else besides Illumination is gunning for families the rest of the summer. MU was hit by Minions but then lost its remaining theaters to Turbo or whatever came out in 2013, whereas there's nothing left this summer. IO and Minions will coexist fine. I'll take a hit OW but I don't see a real concern.

400M in just 10 days?  Wow... and with Pixar's Inside Out opening and it still crushed it.

I think a lot of studios are going to start doing this now.  They have a great hit that was universally loved, wait about 15-20 years and come out with a "sequel" or "prequel" and rake in the money.  It worked for Toy Story and now Jurassic World (Avengers was just a nerdgasm build up of epic proportions that I won't count it).  This makes me all that much more excited to see what Star Wars will do in December... can't wait!

Summer 2013 was the most stupid fuck up ever when it comes to family movies. Shit was coming out non-stop all the Summer. Epic, Monsters University, Despicable Me 2, Turbo, Smurfs 2, Planes, Percy Jackson 2...

Mj2 not hitting 400m

Yeah it is. Even with shit marketing it will get there. It's the finale, MJ1 was well received and had a strong multi, and this year has taught us how dead last year really was. People just weren't going to movies. They most certainly are again. It makes no sense why a huge chunk of the audience that saw both the first two wouldn't come back to see how it ends. It's definitely going to be a DH1 to DH2 situation.

Mj2 not hitting 400m

I'm remaining optimistic and believe in MJ2 crossing $400m. This year has shown that audiences are excited for movies again. I'd be very happy with anything over $400m and thrilled if it manged to cross CF's $424.

IO isn't guaranteed an earth shatteringly awesome multiplier to begin with, regardless of wom or the Minions. It was as front loaded as TS3 on OW despite not being a sequel. It opened as big as it did because it was the first big animated film in months and the first Pixar film in 2 years.

DH1 to DH2 added 3D and had the nostalgia effect. MJ2 will increase but not by a large amount

I'm still not 100% convinced that MJ2 has dropped 3d. I trust Forbes but I am confused why I've never seen any other media source or any people involved in the film acknowledge this on Twitter or in any articles interviews not including the one at Forbes.

MJ2 shouldn't increase as much as DH2. Sure it's adding 3D but people keep talking about this finale factor as if it's something that constantly works. Pretty much only DH2 has benefitted from this "finale" factor and that's mostly because of how it was the story of 3 young kids growing up over 10 years with the kids that watched it to begin with. The hype of one final film with them was very high.

Mockingjay doesn't really have that. It's also hurt at least a bit by the actual BOOK it's based on being less well received as the previous two
