The reason disney struggles to outright win marketshare is because they usually release the least films out of big 6. So if one or two of their films underwhelm they don't have any mid level budget films to pick up the slack.

The reason disney struggles to outright win marketshare is because they usually release the least films out of big 6. So if one or two of their films underwhelm they don't have any mid level budget films to pick up the slack.

 

It's a strategy they started a few years back. Have fewer films and focus on what they think will be surefire hits. But like what you said, if a film underwhelms, it will be a big blow. They now have Marvel, Pixar, their own animation arm plus STAR WARS. I don't see them being lower than #3 every year.
