I saw that the budget on "The Last Witch Hunter". And it's not by much though...just only $90M budget. So it's not a big-budgeted flick.

I doubt it costs that much. Maybe 75M?

Lackluster limited debut for CBS News pic #Truth. Just $77k from 6 NY/LA thtrs for $12k avg. Tough expansion ahead w/ DC/SF next wknd.

 

A24's ROOM debuted with $120k on 4 screens, for a solid $30,000 per.

 

Universal's STEVE JOBS expanded into 60 theaters totaling $1.5M--$25,831 per.

 

THE MARTIAN took in an estimated $21.5M this weekend. Domestic total stands at $143.80M. #TheMartian

 

Guillermo del Toro's CRIMSON PEAK is a bloody-drippin' bomb as the $55M production topped out with just $12.8M.

 

PAN took in an estimated $5.86M this weekend. Domestic total stands at $25.74M. #Pan

Wouldn't Witch Hunter need over 200 m WW to break even?

Though Hansel and Gretel made 226 m so I guess there's a chance.

12.8 m for Crimson Peak?

I guess Victorian Age horror has zero mass appeal.

I expected under 25 m but under 13 m? Damn, that's terrible.

 

I don't think Victorian Age horror is the issue. The trailer never looked scary. As soon as those awful CG ghosts started crawling on the floor and reaching out for people, horror fans checked out. People will go see a horror movie if it looks scary, regardless of setting. 

 

But thanks GDT for making studios think Victorian horror = flop!
